Trend, Sophos and McAfee flunk Vista SP1 anti-virus tests

Top tier anti-virus vendors including McAfee, Trend Micro, and Sophos all failed to secure Windows Vista SP1 in recent independent tests.

Virus Bulletin, the independent security certification body, said 17 of 37 anti-virus products tested failed to reach the VB100 certification standard. McAfee VirusScan, Trend Micro Internet Security and Sophos Anti-Virus overlooked threats known to be in circulation. Other vendors whose products failed to make the grade included Alwil, BitDefender, Norman, PC Tools, and VirusBuster.

Some of the ignored threats - largely polymorphic file infectors - have been in circulation for months. "It is disappointing to see so many products tripping up over threats that are not even new - computer users should be getting a better service from their anti-virus vendors than this," Virus Bulletin technical consultant John Hawes said.

Vista attacked by 13-year-old virus

A batch of laptops pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium was found to have been infected with a 13-year-old boot sector virus.

Those of you with a long memory will vividly recall the year 1994: Nirvana's lead singer Kurt Cobain died, South Africa held its first multi-racial elections, and Tony Blair became leader of the Labour party. Oh, and Microsoft's operating system was the quaint, pre-NT Windows for Workgroups.

But it was a year that also saw the arrival of a boot sector computer virus known as Stoned.Angelina which moved the original master boot record to cylinder 0, head 0, sector 9.

It would appear that this teenage virus has not yet been consigned to the history books.

Exclusive: Microsoft's new Anti-Virus, 'Morro', revealed

Ever since Microsoft discontinued its "OneCare" Anti-Virus suite, gossip has been flying that Microsoft would be releasing a free Anti-Virus\Anti-Spyware tool codenamed "Morro". The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is already being tested by Microsoft employees and a trial version will be made available "soon". Microsoft has stated that Morro would be available by the end of 2009 at the latest. "Morro" is likely to be targeted to compete with the low end of anti-virus products from other providers, and it will not have much of an impact on sales of full-blown security suites.

First Trojan-SMS virus for S60 Smartphones

The first Trojan SMS virus, designed for smartphones running Series 60 OS, has been spotted by Russian antivirus maker “Kaspersky Labs”. The virus is called Trojan-SMS.Symb.OS.Viver.

Viver is not a harmless concept study like recent Podloso Linux virus for iPod. If you get infected with this one, it can cost you some pretty money - after installation on your phone, Viver starts sending SMS messages to the premium SMS numbers, thus accruing charges to your mobile account and generating income for the virus author.

While quite a few similar viruses were spotted for all JAVA running mobile phones, Viver is the first to be specifically designed for S60 based smartphones...

The secure Mac: myth or legend?

Apple computers have built a solid reputation on being virus-free, but is the reality different from the image? We look at the security concerns affecting Mac users -- and whether there's cause for alarm.

US health authorities were chuffed recently to announce that canine rabies -- a once common viral infection dangerous to dogs as well as humans -- had been eliminated from the country after not even a single case had been reported since 2004.

A week later, Microsoft put its tail between its legs after it was revealed that its state-of-the-art Windows Vista operating system had fallen prey to Stoned.Angelina, a boot-sector virus that was first seen in 1994 and last seen in the wild in 2001. Nonetheless, up to 100,000 German Medion customers, Virus Bulletin reported, received new computers with the virus on their hard drives. Worse still, the virus went undetected by the bundled Bullguard antivirus software, which had removed the virus definition from its product due to its perceived extinction.

Movie to be based off of the 'I Love You' virus.

The movie entitled, "I Love You", based off of the well-known "Melissa Virus" is in post production and scheduled for release some time in 2009. It stars Kristin Bauer, Dean Cain and Briana Evigan.

For those who need a refresher the "I Love You" virus was a worm released on May 4th 2000, that upon infection would mail itself to those on the contact list of the infected. It also made several malicious changes to the infected computer. Its name was acquired from the fact that it was usually sent as an attachment in an email that had "I Love You" as a subject header.

The movie, according to Evigan, is about a Filipino boy who attempts to contact an American girl. His attempts are unsuccessful so his friends suggest that he send out a computer virus. Unfortunately, there is not much information available at this point and time. It is also relatively unclear is the inspiration of the "I Love You" virus is evident solely in the fact that the boy writes a virus, or whether this will be a movie playing on the origin of the actual virus.

Symantec and McAfee should have prepared better for Vista

IT security firm Sophos is recommending that system administrators ask their security vendors if they are capable of properly protecting them on the forthcoming 64-bit version of Vista, as arguments continue regarding access to Microsoft's operating system code (kernel). Sophos has reassured its customers that Sophos Anti-Virus will offer full protection against malware threats on Vista, and suggests that some security vendors may not have given sufficient thought to the new operating system when developing their products.

Anti-virus firms Symantec and McAfee have recently made high-profile complaints that they are being "locked out" of the Vista operating system kernel by Microsoft's PatchGuard prevention system. They argue that this is preventing them from continuing to develop pro-active protection against new malware, sometimes referred to as 'host intrusion prevention' or 'HIPS'. They claim this action is anti-competitive.

However, Sophos argues that its approach to HIPS technology has met with no problems on both the low-spec and high-spec versions of Windows Vista. In addition, Sophos claims that Microsoft has so far provided all the interfaces that Sophos needs for providing this form of protection.

"Symantec and McAfee may be struggling with HIPS because they haven't coded their solutions with high-spec Vista in mind," said Richard Jacobs, CTO of Sophos. "We've taken a different approach, by focusing on catching bad behaviour before it has a chance to occur. Additionally, we are building our technology by making use of supported Microsoft interfaces rather than by trying to subvert them. That's why we're ready for 64-bit Vista, and others aren't."
