The Unexpected: Battery Life in OS X vs. Windows Vista

AnandTech has done a thorough review of the new Macbook and Macbook Pro including comparing battery life performance of Vista vs. OS X on the Macbook Pro and Macbook Air. The results are quite surprising to say the least...

Anand Lal Shimpi: A while ago I started testing the Lenovo X300 with hopes of comparing it to Apple's MacBook Air. The review never saw the light of day but the testing was mostly complete. Obviously the X300 doesn't run OS X, but the MacBook Air can run Windows so I compared battery life between the two under Vista, which yielded some unexpected results.

There are no scripted battery life tests under OS X, while under Vista we have things like MobileMark - luckily, the tests I've put together for OS X can easily be reproduced under Vista. Let's take a look at my tests under OS X...

HTC Touch Pro battery explodes, the trend continues

Yesterday Neowin reported on a MacBook Pro whose MagSafe adapter overheated burning the user and the laptop. Today reports are surfacing on an HTC Touch Pro whose spare battery erupted. The story goes that the user "had a spare Touch Pro battery in the back pocket of his pants. He walked into his home earlier in the week to be greeted with a burning smell in the air. He later went on to do some laundry to find a huge hole with burn marks in the pocket of his pants. The battery in question must have expanded and burned through it.

Microsoft denies Sony's Vista hardware claims

Microsoft has denied Sony's claim that the current release of Vista supports neither Intel's Turbo Memory technology nor hybrid hard drives.

The spat between the companies arose after Sony revealed to ZDNet.co.uk that it would not include Turbo Memory an embedded flash memory module formerly known by its code name Robson in this summer's Vaio notebooks because Vista will not allow the benefits of Turbo Memory to be utilised until Service Pack 1 (SP1) of the operating system is released later this year.

Turbo Memory is an optional component of Intel's Centrino Pro/Duo platform (previously known as Santa Rosa), which makes use of Vista features such as ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive. These features use non-volatile "third-stage" memory alongside a computer's RAM and traditional hard drive to boost performance and start-up time. Most manufacturers are ready to release Centrino Pro notebooks that include Turbo Memory, although HP has turned it down due to worries over cost efficiency and the limitations it places on users who want to use external flash memory to boost performance...

Mag names Mac Pro 'fastest PC in UK'

Apple's four-core Intel-based Mac Pro desktop has been named the UK's fastest PC after it was lined up against a top-of-the-line Windows machine by British magazine PC Pro.

According to the publication's upcoming November issue, out in two weeks' time, the 3GHz Mac Pro was run alongside a Pentium D-based machine. The Mac Pro has two dual-core Xeon 5160 CPUs, 4GB of DDR 2 memory mounted on FB-DIMMs, a Quadro FX 4500 graphics card and 1.75TB of hard disk capacity. Apple offers 15-inch MacBook Pro with matte display option

Yup, that's right. Apple have extended the matte display option on customised orders from Apple.com to the 15-inch MacBook Pros. For $50 more, you get a screen less susceptible to glare from light (particularly the sun), with supposedly less vibrant colours, no glass screen, and a silver bezel as opposed to a black bezel. The news follows rumours that Apple were considering extending the matte option from the 17-inch MacBook Pro to its other offerings, but it remains to be seen whether or not this trend will continue. With the 13-inch now a part of the Pro family, could the baby Pro be the next in line for the antiglare option?

Vista licence options make Macs look cheap

A UK property asset management company is examining Apple Macs and Linux desktops to cut its dependency on Microsoft in the wake of the software giant's aggressive licensing options.

Capital & Regional has about 700 PC users and currently runs Windows XP Pro and Office XP Pro, Chief Information Officer Richard Snooks has hit out Microsoft's aggressive licensing policies.

"We are feeling the pinch of the aggressive revenue targets of Microsoft," Snooks said. "We are asking ourselves, 'Are they (Microsoft) fit for our business?'"

In particular, Snooks isn't convinced by the arguments for upgrading to Microsoft's latest Windows operating system, Vista, and is actively looking at alternatives, including a small trial of a Suse Linux desktop inside the IT department. ..

Microsoft decides Vista is flawless

Microsoft may have released a beta of Vista's Service Pack 1 - but according to the company's official support site, the operating system is absolutely flawless.

When Word crashed on a disgruntled PC Pro reader, he dutifully agreed to fill in the online form to report the crash.

However, when he went to select his operating system from the list, he found that Vista wasn't listed - click here to see the errant form.

We can only draw one of two conclusions: either Microsoft's support staff have sloppily forgotten to add Vista to the online support forms, or else they truly believe the operating system is invincible.

Although judging by the complaints that regularly fill our inbox, the latter seems decidedly unlikely.
