Matrix Screen Saver

Whether you're a newbie or senior software engineer, you want your screen savers to look cool, and this one fits the bill. It emulates the green Matrix code you see in the movie, with characters running vertically down the black background. You can set the resolution, the speed of the falling glyphs, and other options.

Turkey Screen Saver

Adorn your desktop with some turkeys strutting across a simple black background. As the turkeys amble across the screen, they show a little knowledge of what will become of them Thanksgiving day--making for a poignant scene of innocence the moment before all is corrupted. You can choose from one to ten turkeys; the program also offers password protection.

Note that the screen saver shows the vendor's name on your desktop, and although this brash self-promotion can seem a bit annoying, it is tolerable--especially since the program is free, and because it's seasonal, you'll probably want it on your desktop for only a short time.

Hubble Images Screen Saver

Take your mind to the heavens every time your computer is left idle. The Hubble Images Screen Saver displays images of nebulae and celestial bodies, captured by the world-famous telescope.

There's no other information concerning the images than the names, so if you wish to learn more about spacey sights with names like "Eta Carinae" or "NGC-3603," you'll have to look elsewhere. But the full-screen NASA photographs will jettison you to places far removed from this mudane, terrestrial existence.

European Vista and XP to get browser ballot screen too

Microsoft has confirmed that it will be distributing a ballot screen software update to users, in Europe, of Windows XP and Windows Vista. Last week Neowin reported that Microsoft has proposed the idea of a ballot screen to the EU. European consumers who buy a new Windows PC with Internet Explorer set as their default browser would be shown a ‘ballot screen' from which they could, if they wished, easily install competing browsers from the Web. If this proposal is ultimately accepted, Microsoft will ship Windows in Europe with the full functionality available in the rest of the world.

Medical Technology: The undercover life saver

As the technology around us grows at a steadfast rate, we tend to only relate these advancements to the hot consumer gadgets. However, instead of writing up about the latest cell-phones and general tech news, I decided to hit the road and delve into the world of medical technology. My main focus was to check out some of the devices used in emergency situations, and see how it can increase the potential of saving a life. From talking with my local Paramedics, I was informed about a neat device that can be found in arenas, libraries, community buildings, restaurants, and other public buildings mainly in the United States, and also in the Province of Ontario, Canada.

Windows 7 695x boot screen revealed

Chris Holmes, Windows Enthusiast and blogger, has posted a short and somewhat blurry video of the new Windows 7 boot screen in action. The latest sign of changes for Windows 7 signals a departure from the Vista boot up screen. Microsoft kept the boot screen simple with Vista after asking BIOS makers, PC makers, and video card makers to remove product advertisement screens at system boot. Microsoft created a simple boot method which it claimed took 6 seconds off initial boot compared to the more graphical boot that it had originally planned with the Longhorn betas.

Black screen of darkness to haunt Vista pirates

Microsoft Windows' infamous "Blue Screen of Death" has become synonymous with an operating system crash or freeze, but that's nothing compared with what users of pirated copies of Vista worldwide can expect from now - a black screen of darkness.

In an e-mail to a large Windows Vista OEM distributor titled "Pirated Vista - A darkness descends!", a local Microsoft representative made it quite clear what Vista pirates can expect to happen to their unlicenced installations.

A copy of this e-mail was obtained by Computerworld:

Good Afternoon, As of this week, Microsoft have activated a function in Vista called 'Reduced Functionality'. This is a specific function in Vista which effectively disables non genuine copies of Windows. Therefore, anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will experience...

Vista's Purple Screen of Death

We've all heard of (and, quite unfortunately, experienced) the infamous Blue Screen of Death. Some of us who tested the earlier Windows Vista beta builds had the unique experience of trying out the Red of Screen Death, which occurred when the bootloader experienced an un-handled exception (we experienced more than our fair share of these during the early days of EasyBCD development!). And then there's Vista's Purple Screen of Death, which few have seen.

Lenovo to launch dual-screen Workstation at CES

Lenovo is all geared up to launch its Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds Workstation at the CES Expo this January. The most interesting thing about this workstation is that it features a dual screen display, hence the 'ds' in its product name(short for 'dual screen'). The workstation comes with a dual screen display - The main screen is 17 inches and the secondary screen is 10.6 inches. Lenovo is also offering users the option of selecting the less expensive Intel Core 2 Quad Processor (2.66GHz built on the newer 45-nanometer manufacturing process) instead of the Intel Core 2 Extreme along with the dual screen display.

The compatibility constraints of your side effects: Beeping

Raymond Chen: Why does the Welcome screen beep if you hit the space bar after the computer has finished starting up?

For compatibility with a side effect of the Windows XP Welcome screen.

A beta tester asked us why we removed the beeps that were generated if you started typing at the Welcome screen after the computer finished starting up. Well, we didn't remove the beeps consciously. That the old Welcome screen beeped was just a side effect of the way the old Welcome screen positioned focus at startup and how it handled unexpected input. When the Welcome screen was rewritten for Windows Vista, focus and input were handled differently, and it so happened that the new way didn't beep under the initial conditions.

The tester in this case was blind and relied upon the beeping to know when the system was ready. The Welcome screen folks had to go back and take extra care to ensure that if you start the computer and wait for the Welcome screen, then hit the space bar, you get a beep.

Notebooks: battery hype getting ridiculous

Toshiba's advertising campaign for the Portege R500 claims "weighs nothing, does everything". Everything, that is, except for delivering the advertised battery life.

Users of Toshibas much-hyped Portege R500 and many other big name notebooks are getting a lot less than they bargain for when it comes to the notebooks battery life.

Instead of the huge 12.5 hours advertised by Toshiba, our testing shows that youll get less than half that figure with the R500. With DVD playback, you can expect 3 hours or less.

Whats surprising is how Toshiba told us they came up with the 12.5 hour figure “ by turning off the LCD backlight and WiFi (amongst other power saver settings). In other words, you cant actually see the screen unless perhaps youre sitting in a park in direct sunlight.

Trojan attack targets top executives

Top-level employees of publicly listed companies are being targeted by cybercriminals using malware-infected RTF documents disguised as recruitment letters.

Security company MessageLabs reported that 1,100 e-mails containing malware-infected RTF (rich text file) attachments were recorded over a 16-hour period this month. Four separate waves appeared between September 13 and 14, the company said.

"All (the e-mails) were going after (top-level) management. The e-mails included the company name in the subject field, purporting to be a recruitment company. What it had in the attachment is an executable RTF file," a MessageLabs representative said.

Similar e-mails were noticed in June, the representative said.

The e-mail, which contains no body text, includes a .scr screen-saver dummy file within an executable RTF file, the representative said. When recipients attempt to open the file, a message is displayed stating: "Microsoft has encountered an error and had to close." The recipient is then advised: "To view this, double click on the message."..

Microsoft: European XP and Vista users to get the ballot screen, too

Microsoft posted on its Web site on July 24 the details of its proposal to the European Commision (EC) designed to settle its browser-bundling antitrust case in Europe.

<...> There are some interesting tidbits in the fine print of Microsoft’s propsal. For one, the “ballot screen,” which Microsoft has said it will provide to allow European users a choice of browsers on their Windows PCs, isn’t for Windows 7 users only. Microsoft is proposing that it be allowed to provide the ballot screen to European users running Windows XP, Vista and/or Windows 7...
