In progress: Vista updates!
In progress right now is a beta testers chat with MS experts on the future of IE7 and Vista. Here are some parts of the chat that may be interesting to you... more to come shortly:
SamW [MS] (Expert):
Q: [17] When will you release the November CTP? Only 2 days left of November!
A: There will be no CTP for Vista in November because we are targeting for most features to be code-complete by end of December and resources efforts are going towards that effort. We should have a CTP in December before the Christmas holiday. These interim changes have no impact on our general availability target for Windows Vista. We are on track to deliver a high-quality Windows Vista in the 2nd half of 2006.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert):
Q: [54] Can someone clear up what seems to be confusion on the groups over the release of Build 5259? Did it go to selected testers or TAP because date of release and extent seems confused. I notice Mario mentions it today.
A: A specific, small group of partners received access to 5259. It is an IDW build and has not gone through the CTP testing process.

24.11.2008Vista not really helping PC sales, says report

25.03.2009Ballmer describes Vista as "work in progress"
Steve Ballmer has admitted that Vista is "a work in progress", and admitted the company has to learn lessons from its release. Speaking at the Most
Valuable Professional Global Summit in Seattle, Ballmer resisted calls for a slimmed down Windows 7: "Vista is bigger than XP and it's gonna stay
bigger than XP. We have to make sure it doesn't get bigger still."
However, Ballmer went on to admit that it had taken too long to get
Vista out the door and admitted it had caused problems: "Vista is a very important piece of work, and I think we did a lot of things right, and I
think we have a lot of things we need to learn from.
"Certainly, you never want to let five years go between releases... because it turns
out many things become problematic when you have those long release cycles. The design point, what you should be targeting, we can never let that
happen again. We had some things that we can't just set the dial back that I think people wish we could."

18.04.2008Gates: Vista is Moving at a "Rapid Sales Rate"
Windows Vista seems to be everyone's favorite whipping boy these days.
PC World labeled it the
#1 Biggest Tech Disappointment of
2007 and mini "
E-Wars" are
guaranteed to prop up anytime the names Windows Vista and Windows XP are uttered with the same breath.
Despite the explosive
nature regarding any discussion of Vista, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates says that the operating system is
doing just fine. According to Gates, Microsoft
has sold over 140M copies of Vista globally since its consumer launch on January 30, 2007.
"That's a very rapid sales rate,"
said Gates who has been very supportive of the operating system despite the backlash.

08.05.2008If Windows is a dead end, what's next?
The writing is on the wall. Despite a major push to sell the much-maligned Windows Vista, customers aren't buying. Nearly two years after
Vista's release, Windows XP remains the standard desktop OS in business, and Microsoft has extended its availability three times (currently to
August 2009) due to customer demand. Microsoft itself forecasts just 2 percent growth in Vista sales in early 2009, after lackluster sales in 2008.
And that's after forcing customers to buy Vista to get XP "downgrades."
So all eyes were on Microsoft's Professional Developer
Conference in Los Angeles last week as Microsoft finally took the wrap off Windows 7, the successor to Vista due in early 2010. But early reaction is
that Windows 7 is just a cleaned-up Vista. It's essentially the same kernel and the same OS, with a couple new technologies thrown in, such as the
Surface-based multitouch capabilities and the ability for developers to ribbon-bar-enable their own apps for better consistency with Microsoft's
new UI approach (one that people either seem to love or hate). "It's not anything radical," says Neil MacDonald, a Gartner analyst who follows
Microsoft. "It's a polished version of Vista."

Despite research that found Vista uptake among businesses is slowing, Michael Dell has predicted that most companies will migrate to the OS within two

Dell's chief executive has predicted that most of his company's business customers will migrate to Vista by 2009.
Speaking to journalists at Gartner's ITxpo Symposium in Orlando, Florida last week, Michael Dell said: "We have a number
who have gone to Vista, and almost all are planning to go to Vista: some in 2008, and some in 2009. As they take on new IT
deployments with new hardware features, Vista will be much better supported."
However, Dell's assertions run contrary to
research published earlier in October by market research company Context, which found that Vista sales for business machines were slowing.

Research firm Gartner have published their predictions for PC sales for 2009, predicting that worldwide sales will fall by 6% from 2008 levels. The
sales of netbooks, however, are set to rise. Gartner forecast that 274 million computers will be sold this year, down from 292 million units last
year. This is actually higher than the 257 million units they predicted earlier this year due to growth that is expected in the fourth quarter of
2009. This growth is set to then set continue into 2010 with a growth of 10.3% currently projected. 21 million netbooks are expected to have been

Vista Business sales soar like a leaping dachshund
August numbers are in from Context, the European PC market watcher, and they show that the Vista is anything but Buena for Microsoft. Vista Business,
the, um, business version of Vista, Microsoft's new operating system, slowed during the month, to grab a measly 13 per cent of unit PC sales through
Europe's top IT disties.
Maybe, the customers were all on holiday that month - you know how continental Europeans love to take
August off. And July too...a month in which Vista Business accounted for 17 per cent of unit PC sales. In other words, Vista Business peddling is
pedaling backwards, while sales of XP, Microsoft's ever-so 20th century operating system, appear to be stabilising. Unit sales of Windows XP
Professional PCs dropped four points to 27 per cent in August compared with July. But as Context helpfully notes, they remain double Vista Business
sales, leaving "XP professional appearing still to be the business operating system of choice".
