Microsoft silent on true Vista figures

Microsoft is keeping mum on sales figures of Windows Vista, despite its chief operating officer claiming that 60 million units have been sold.

The software maker, however, declined to confirm the figure that Kevin Turner told financial analysts last week, throwing into confusion how successful its latest operating system has been.

But, approached by ZDNet Australia's sister site ZDNet.co.uk for confirmation, Microsoft could only confirm that it had sold 40 million, saying the last figure is two months old.

If Microsoft's figures are to be believed, this means Vista sales are flat. Turner's figures mean that 20 million copies of Vista have been sold, on a wholesale basis at least, over the last two months, with 40 million sold in the first four months since the consumer launch in January...

Microsoft Says Vista Sales Strong

Kevin Kutz, a director in Microsoft's Windows client group, has announced that over 20 million copies of Windows Vista were sold globally in the first month of sales since the consumer release (February 2007) compared to more than the 17 million copies of Windows XP that were sold in the first two months following its release in October 2001. " These sales figures reflect global sales from retail, PC manufacturers and the Express Upgrade program, and indicate that we are on track to more than double the initial pace of sales for Windows XP, and for Vista to become the fastest adopted version of Windows ever ," Kutz said. These sales figures were compiled by Microsoft based on sales reports from its retail and PC manufacturers over the period, as well as from the Express Upgrade program.

Kutz declined to break down the numbers by region or per each of the six Vista editions but did note that sales were strong across the globe. Microsoft is expected to disclose more regional and version sales details when it releases its quarterly financial figures in late April. Kutz did acknowledge that, historically, there tended to be a rush of sales immediately after a product's launch, which varied according to the time of year. " It's worth noting that with XP, which we launched in late October in advance of the holiday season, those figures captured some of the holiday rush ," he said. With regard to sales of Office 2007 over the same period, Kutz said Microsoft was not disclosing any sales figures, adding that " the folk at Office are pleased right now with the initial response ."

Is Microsoft Office 2007 outselling Windows Vista?

Mary Jo Foley is speculating that sales of Office 2007 may be outpacing sales of Windows Vista. According to Microsoft's July Vista sales pronouncement, the software giant had sold 60 million copies of Vista. Although the Office team hasn't been talking sales figures since the simultaneous launch of the two products, according to information shared during a recent briefing with certain members of the French tech press, Microsoft allegedly has sold 70 million copies of Office 2007 to date. A Microsoft spokesperson noted: " It's not our policy to confirm the license figures ." Assuming the numbers are correct, and Microsoft hasn't denied them, Office 2007 may be outselling Vista or at the very least, keeping up.

Are there any Neowinians out there who skipped Vista but couldn't resist an upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office?

Why are Vista sales tapering off?

Microsoft is blaming its disappointing third quarter client software sales on factors that exclude Vista. Meanwhile, though, a variety of evidence indicates that many Windows XP users aren't upgrading, but switching to Mac or Linux.

"With respect to third-quarter in particular, there's really no Vista-related issues at all," said Microsoft CFO and Senior VP Chris Liddell, during a conference call on Thursday. There, Microsoft reported a year-over-year drop in sales of 24% for Windows desktop operating systems in the third quarter of Microsoft's fiscal year.

Microsoft's memory-hungry Vista operating system -- along with falling dynamic RAM prices -- is boosting semiconductor sales.

Microsoft's quarter, outlook a mixed bag

Microsofts fiscal third quarter earnings topped Wall Street estimates on Thursday, but the outlook for the June quarter was mixed.

Heres the rundown: Microsofts reported operating income of $4.41 billion, or 47 cents a share, on revenue of $14.45 billion. According to Thomson Financial, Microsoft was expected to report fiscal third quarter earnings of 44 cents a share with sales of $14.5 billion. However, those earnings figures include a charge of $1.42 billion, or 15 cents a share, to cover an EU fine. But it appears that charge was offset by an income tax reduction.

Add it up and Microsofts earnings were better than expected, but sales were a bit light.

Vista sales hit 88 million, up 47% since July

Microsoft Tuesday said sales of Vista have hit 88 million and the company highlighted a number of customer migrations it says signify that users are gearing up to switch to the year-old OS despite recent surveys that say many are taking a cautious approach.

Company officials say the ebb and flow of new contracts and expiring contracts means the overall number of volume licensing copies of Vista doesnt change dramatically from quarter to quarter.

In addition to the 88 million copies of Vista sold, Microsoft said 42 million PCs now have Vista licenses via volume licensing contracts signed by corporate users. Microsoft used the same 42 million number back in July when it discussed Vista uptake at its annual meeting for financial analysts.
