Hopefully, by now you?ve seen from our posts that there are a lot of new features and work going into IE 7. As part of this update, we?re refreshing our icon and logotype. We considered more radical departures from our current logo, but blue ?e? with the ring is very recognizable and familiar to users, so we elected instead to make more subtle changes.

1.3.2008Whats new with backup and Restore on Vista SP1
Christine Fok: Vista SP1 Backup & Restore contains many updates that improve reliability. Great effort has been put into improving the overall quality
of File Backup, Complete PC Backup and System Restore.
Many of those important changes may not be visible to users, but if you
run Backup and Restore tools, you can see some functionality improvements that many users had asked for:
Backing-up EFS
files
File Backup now backs up EFS (Encrypting File System) encrypted files. For those concerned with security, the encryption on
those files are kept throughout the process. So dont worry, you wont compromise your documents security by using our Vista SP1 backup tool.
Restoring Complete PC to a new motherboard
With SP1, you can use Complete PC Restore to a new motherboard that uses
previously absent disk controller. That means, if the new hardware requires an inbox driver that was previously disabled when the Complete PC backup
was taken, the required critical driver will be enabled in the last stage of the restore to ensure the machine will be bootable.
OTS credentials for scheduling Backup
In Vista (pre-SP1), only someone logged in as administrator could configure backup.
Now, its possible for standard users to configure a backup. When scheduling a backup, standard users will be asked to supply administrator
credentials. That is what we call over-the-shoulder (OTS) credentials. That is because¦ well, if the user doesnt know the credentials, the
administrator usually type it over the users shoulder :-)

04.01.2006Beautiful Windows Vista icons a double-edged sword
I admit it. I'm an iconphile. Back in the Windows 3.0 days, I used to go and change all my Windows icons by hand. I thought this was pretty
impressive. Admittedly, it didn't help me pick up women for some reason.
Since then, icons have come a very long way. A VERY long way.
With Windows Vista, the end-user icon experience out of the box is beautiful. But from an icon creator's point of view, the lack of backward
compatibility and effort to support has gone up tremendously. As a result, we've seen a lot fewer custom icons made for Windows Vista than one might
have expected.
Microsoft made three decisions with Windows Vista that will forever affect the way we look at icon making on Windows.

18.12.2008Dell pledges to restore x64 drivers
Following on from yesterdays post
"Dell No Longer Supports Vista x64...and Other Rants", Neowin is happy to report that Dell have responded to

Dell support about their contract obligations to both Microsoft and the Customer to which the Supervisor responded "Our legal team are working on
that".
They must of come to the conclusion to add back the missing drivers!
In a Dell Support representative email response
he pledged to restore the missing updates by saying "Dell does provide both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista drivers for the XPS 410. Checking our website
it appears that the option for XP and Vista 64 are missing, I can get those added back." he goes on to say "Luckily most of the drivers
posted for Vista 32-bit also cover Vista 64. Some of the drivers like the network driver and most of the applications are limited to 32. For those
exceptions, the drivers are available on the Resource DVD and you can locate the drivers using the search feature (a difficult procedure at the
moment, I’m afraid)." without explaining exactly why its difficult, he finishes up the email with "Andy and I will work on getting the
64-bit OS selection added back."
It appears after many emails back and forth Dell are finally doing what they are good at, Customer
service. God forbid they forget exactly who it is that put them on a pedestal and who can just as easily knock em off!
Morpheus had this to
say ->

12.03.2008Are Vista icons facing the wrong way ?
No doubt you’ve all seen the “Computer” icon in Windows Vista. Some of you might have even clicked on it and few of you probably
have a shortcut on your desktop. But has it ever occurred to you it’s facing the wrong direction, away from you? At least one guy did, and this
is just one of the minor details under scrutiny at the Windows UX Taskforce that is particularly fascinating.
The problem is, by default,
Windows displays icons from left to right. Assuming the user sits in the middle of the monitor, the icons should in fact face right towards you and
not the edge of the monitor. The only icon in Vista off the top of my head which does this correctly are the “folders” icon which open up
towards the right. This actually conflicts with the official user experience guidelines suggesting the perspective of icons face left.
If
this isn’t weird enough, the Windows XP’s icons and even conceptual Vista icons designed by Iconfactory faced the right (pun) way. For
some unknown reason, Microsoft designers decided to flip them. Mac OSX icons face directly at you - probably the best solution.

25.12.2006Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore
Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an
individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed
up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server
keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the
amount of space that is used on your home server.

15.09.2005Automated System Recovery (ASR) in Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1
Automated System Recovery or ASR as it is more commonly known is the Windows API set to capture the configuration of disks and volumes on a system and
restore them in bare metal recovery scenarios. During such recoveries, backup applications (requesters) invoke ASR to restore the disks and volumes
prior to putting back the operating system, applications and data.
For the purpose of bare metal recovery scenarios, the disks
and volumes in a system can be divided into two broad categories “ critical and non-critical. Critical volumes are those containing system state or
operating system components and include the boot and system volumes. A volume containing the Active Directory database on a domain controller is also
an example of a critical volume. Critical disks as youve likely guessed are those that contain critical volumes.
Once the
operating system and data have been put back, requesters may perform more recovery operations after the system is booted into the restored operating
system.

Official: Microsoft extends Windows XP's stay
Bowing to pressure from customers and computer makers, Microsoft plans to keep Windows XP around a little longer.
Large PC
manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after January 31. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow them to continue
selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded until June 30, a further five months. Microsoft also plans to keep XP on retail shelves longer
and will allow computer makers in emerging markets to build machines with Windows XP Starter Edition until June 2010.
The move
indicates the continued demand for the older operating system, some nine months after Windows Vista hit store shelves.
In recent
weeks, several PC makers launched programs that allow new PC buyers to more easily "downgrade" their Vista Business and Vista Ultimate machines to
Windows XP. Fujitsu, which was among those lobbying for the change, has started including an XP restore disc in the box with all of its laptops
running Vista Business. ..
