15.2.2008Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit (Beta 3)
The Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit includes a set of hands-on-labs and presentations for technologies such as IIS7, Management, WCF, WF,
Windows CardSpace, Windows PowerShell, Virtualization and the Transactional File System (TxF). The content was originally created by Microsoft's
Developer & Platform Evangelism group as part of the Windows Server 2008 Touchdown training activities.
The seven hands-on labs
included in this kit are based on the DinnerNow sample application. The entire source code for the DinnerNow sample application can be downloaded from
codeplex (see the related resources), however, this sample is not required for using the developer training kit.
Although this
kit is intended to show developers how to build applications that target Windows Server 2008 technologies, the kit can be installed on Windows Vista,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. The hands-on labs and most of the technologies covered in this training kit also apply to Windows Vista.

This kit gives you the benefits of having a SSD as well as higher portability. The kit comes with a 3.5" bay, 5.25" drive bracket, and a 2.5" USB
2.0 enclosure for a SSD. This allows you to plug the drive into a computer and get SATA2 3Gb/s speeds, and then eject it to have the ability to take

11.02.2008Driver Signing changes between Windows XP and Vista...
Chris Taylor: In XP the driver rankings were determined in the following way as discussed in the "Windows Vista Resource Kit":
-
In-box drivers are given first preference.
- Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) signed drivers next.
- Unsigned drivers are
given lowest preference.
In Vista this algorithm was extended to include eight levels of digital signing:
- Microsoft
signed WHQL Certified Drivers.
- Microsoft signed in-box drivers (NT Build Lab Certified).
- Microsoft signed Windows Sustained
Engineering Certified drivers.
- Drivers that have been signed using Authenticode (Enterprise CA).
- Drivers that have been signed
using Authenticode (Class 3 CA Certified).
- Drivers that have been signed using Authenticode (MAKECERT.EXE Certified).
-
Microsoft signed WHQL Certified drivers for a down level Windows Operating system.
- Unsigned Drivers.
This behavior is
illustrated in setupapi.dev.log when determining which driver to install for a device.

22.03.200810 Ways Vista is more annoying with Windows 7 available
We all know Windows Vista got a bit of a bum rap. Its biggest sin was that it shipped earlier than it should and its reputation has never recovered.
However, with Windows 7 now out, those of us who have to switch between PCs now find ourselves discovering completely new things about Windows Vista
that are annoying -- because they are things that Windows 7 made so much better. Here's our list... #1 "Program not responding" Windows
Vista loved to throw programs under the bus for not responding. This was especially true of Windows Explorer which regularly would fade out a window
because it was trying to access a network resource.

05.11.2009Hackers update malware tool kit, add first zero-day attack code
A new version of the IcePack hacker exploit tool kit has been released, security researchers warned today, and for the first time it includes attack
code designed to exploit an unpatched, or zero-day, Microsoft vulnerability.
Three of IcePack's eight exploit tools are new,
said Roger Thompson, chief technology officer at Exploit Prevention Labs Inc. That's noteworthy in and of itself, Thompson said. "The mix of old and
new exploits is to be expected, but three new ones in one update is pretty impressive," he noted.
But the new tool kit also
sports a first. "The latest iteration has done something original," said Thompson, pointing to an exploit that attacks a zero-day vulnerability in
Microsoft's DirectX software development kit (SDK). "The closest to a tool-kit zero-day exploit
was for the ANI
vulnerability."
He was referring to a Windows bug that surfaced in early April. By the time that Mpack, an IcePack predecessor,
added the ANI exploit, however, Microsoft had patched the vulnerability with an emergency out-of-cycle update. ..

Comparing Browsers' Memory Usage
The resource usage of browsers is an important aspect in modern-day computing, because the browser is taking on an ever more important role in
day-to-day computing tasks. Hence, it may come as no surprise that many complaints regarding browsers are not about rendering speed or rendering
quality, but about resource usage. Dot Net Perls ran an interesting benchmark on
Windows Vista SP1, comparing 5 browsers to each other.

Apple opens App Store Resource Center for developers
Apple's App Store has only been around for a relatively short time, but it's grown phenomenally during the period of time that it has been
available. Unfortunately for the company, it may have grown a bit too fast, and as such, Apple seems a bit under prepared. Many developers face long
wait times for application approvals, some get their software rejection unfairly, and a vast majority get frustrated when they face long periods of
silence whilst their applications are inspected. Whilst the first couple of issues are being worked on, the third has been somewhat addressed today,
according to MacRumors, with the introduction of the App Store Resource Center.
