Vista Capable scandal

Many will remember a few years back before the launch of Vista, Microsoft decided to tout some PC's as Vista capable. This seemed an innocent and easy way to boost sales but what happened is a different story. The Vista capable idea was a genuine one at heart. It was designed to allow consumer to buy new PC's with confidence that the new computer would run the latest version of Vista when it launched. The idea was genius for Microsoft, they could sell more PC's (indirectly getting sales of the OS and software) and have consumers know they would be able to upgrade with confidence. What happened was that Intel got in the way.

Vista: One Year Later

One year ago today, Microsoft released Windows Vista to manufacturing. In the obligatory anniversary post we ask: Was it ready? Will it ever be ready?

The answer to the first question is an emphatic "no." Vista wasn't ready. Hardware manufacturers and software developers weren't ready for it. The channel and enterprises weren't ready, and consumers couldn't get it because Vista missed holiday 2006.

Microsoft promised WOW, but the reaction was, "What?" What is different from Windows XP? What is wrong with the hardware requirements? What is the difference between "Capable" and "Ready?" What is this Software Assurance requirement for Vista Enterprise? What happened to the familiarity of Windows XP? What is wrong with my Vista applications and hardware?

More recently the "W" question is "When?"--as in when will Microsoft release Vista Service Pack 1?

Final Windows Vista System Specs Revealed

Microsoft just relealed the final Windows Vista Hardware Requirements. There you go, you'll need the following machine to run Vista:

Minimal Specs (Called Vista-Ready PCs):
-800Mhz Processor
-512 MB of RAM
-DirectX 9-Capable Graphics Processor

Recommended Specs (Called Premium-Ready PCs):
-1 Ghz Processor
-128 MB Graphics Memory, numerous other graphics-related requirements
-1 GB System Memory

Microsoft also plans to make an advertisement campaign around those required machines, in order to make people be sure their machine will meet those requirements, and this campaign should be revealed on May 18th, in this case tomorrow.

This announcement was made to prepare the also planned WinHEC release of Windows Vista Beta 2 (Supposedly Build 5384, last known compiled build as of today), which will likely be made public in the days following its release at WinHEC.

These requirements are about what was expected, maybe a little bit below. As previously announced, most PCs sold within last year might be Vista-Ready, though very few fully meet the Premium-Ready requirements.

Getting ready for Vista SP1

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Ive now carried out well over a hundred Vista to Vista Service Pack 1 upgrades. While many of the upgrades I carried out were experimental and done on test rigs which I considered to be sacrificial, quite a few have been key production machines which I cannot afford to have out of service for any extended period of time.

Getting ready for Vista SP1With the public release of Vista SP1 drawing nearer, its a good time to share with you the Vista to Vista SP1 action plan that I developed that has meant that I have (so far ¦ ) enjoyed a 100% success rate. By following this action plan Ive kept downtime to a minimum and suffered no data loss at all.

Windows Vista Earns IPv6 Ready Logo Phase 2

On October 25, 2007, Windows Vista earned the IPv6 Forums IPv6 Ready Phase 2 Logo from the IPv6 Consortium and University of New Hampshire - InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL).

Vista earned its Phase 1 Logo, which focuses on interoperability of core protocols, and compliance to MUST statements in core RFCs back in March of 2007. Phase 2 Logo is a more rigorous examination which is focused on daily professional use of IPv6, and examines compliance to both MUST and SHOULD statements in a wider set of scenarios.

You can verify the Phase 1 logo status here, and the Phase 2 logo status here.

This is a great win for the team and once again shows that IPv6 is ready. Are you?

Vista graphics drivers to be more stable than XP drivers, ATI says

San Francisco (CA) - Graphics drivers developed for Vista, Microsoft's next generation operating system, will be far more stable than their Windows XP-based counterparts, and not crash the operating system anymore, an executive of graphics chip developer ATI told Tom's Hardware Guide.

Ben Bar-Haim, vice president of ATI's software division, told us consumers will be able to identify graphics cards supporting Vista by way of a "Vista ready" logo, which will likely appear in multiple flavors indicating different feature levels. The release of Microsoft's new operating system may still be at least one year out, but hardware manufacturers, including ATI, are already gearing up for yet another certification and logo round: "Vista ready" will be the catch-phrase promoting hardware products as a safe investment.

ATI's new Xpress 200 integrated graphics processor (IGP) has already claimed dibs on the phrase. Its specifications appear to meet Microsoft's current minimum graphics requirements, which include support for DirectX 9 and at least 64 Mb of graphics memory. "Vista ready", however, does not necessarily mean that users will be able to run all 3D effects. According to Ben Bar-Haim, vice president in ATI's software division, there is a good chance that there will be at two "Vista ready" logos - one covering "basic" requirements and the other one "full" feature capability. Bar-Haim said that "two logos is the concept right now," but the final marketing would still depend on "further OEM input." ..

Microsoft recommends upgrade to Vista before Windows 7

As Windows 7 gets ready for its next release, it could be already hurting Vista's remaining chances with businesses and organizations. Microsoft has started to push Vista to its corporate customers. Earlier this month Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer warned companies to upgrade from XP. Following Ballmer, Gavriella Schuster, Senior Director in Windows Product Management group urges businesses to upgrade to Windows Vista now, even if they plan to move to Windows 7 when it ships. Schuster argues that the benefits of Vista upgrade would outweigh the costs of upgrading to Vista and urges companies to start Windows 7 Beta testing as soon as possible.
