01.08.2008Early Vista SP1 64-bit installs causing new problems?
An iTWire journo by the name of Alex
has found yet another Vista
SP1 issue to bitch about, this time it's the x64 version and early reports are pointing to several problems. Anything from the "Windows
Performance Rating" vanishing, to the poor souls Treo not being recognized through "Windows Mobile Center" after SP1 installation. There could be
many explanations for this happening: Either the guys laptop is so sucky that Vista did him a favor by simply hiding crap results, and his phone may
no longer sync to Mobile center because he has so few friends and contacts it just isn't worth it.
Vista may of done the guy a
favour.
Or Vista is indeed broke, and Microsoft need to sort it. Either way I am sick of all the ranting as of late, so much so that I will
be installing Windows Vista x64 SP1 just to annoy websites like iTWire,
InfoWorld and CNet (Staff bloggers) and all of
their readers to show them that any normal user can install Vista x64 SP1 and have everything work afterwards. Meanwhile a whambulance has been
dispatched to the above mentioned sites to pick up the whiney tossers.

25.02.2008Vista, Acronis TrueImage 11 and GRUB Error 22
Jonathan Schlaffer: Those of you with Vista know that there can be boot problems after you have cloned your existing installation to a faster or
larger hard drive (it works best when its both). And, sometimes after cloning, there can be
activation issues as well
which I have encountered in the past.
Some say those issues are gone due to updates to the way WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage)
works in Vista but Microsoft should rename their DRM protection system to Windows Genuine Annoyance.
These problems did not exist
under XP but it appears that Vista places undue importance on the hard drive when deciding whether or not to deactivate itself. I am aware that SP1
changes the way WGA works slightly but that cannot change what has happened in the past.

25.12.2007Windows Vista and Mac OSX see surge in consumer use
While businesses and corporate entities may have little interest in using either Vista or Mac OSX, both are gaining popularity and market share but
only in the area related to home or home office use which is both good and bad.
Its good in the fact that Vista now has a 10%
market share in computers that are connected to the Internet, its bad that corporations are either not going to deploy Vista or have delayed
deployments so much that by the time it comes around again, Windows 7 may be out.
Mac OSX now has something in the area of a 7%
market share, Mac use has seen excellent growth over the past year but has not been without its
share of problems. Large corporations would never deploy OSX on a wide scale so that is not a concern there.

Todd Bishop: A federal judge today unsealed internal Microsoft e-mails that have been used to support the plaintiffs' case in the lawsuit over the
"Windows Vista Capable" program. Snippets were
previously read aloud in
court, but the full messages go further to reveal extensive hand-wringing, at the highest levels of the company, over Windows Vista's hardware
and software compatibility problems after the operating system was launched.
For example, one February 2007 exchange (
PDF, 17 pages) started with an e-mail to Microsoft CEO Steve
Ballmer from board member Jon Shirley, who explained that he upgraded one of his computers to Windows Vista only to find it was experiencing
compatibility problems with two of Microsoft's own MSN applications. Shirley wasn't upgrading his other computer because of a lack of hardware
drivers. As many early Windows Vista users know, Shirley wasn't the only one experiencing those kinds of problems, especially in the initial months
after release.

I've been enjoying Windows 7 so much over the past week, that I've been evangelizing it to all of my friends. One friend with a Dell Inspiron

drivers for this card out of the box. I feel that Windows 7 should have all of the same in-box drivers as Vista, and it's a bummer that this one
is not included.

Following reports of installation problems by some users attempting to deploy the final version of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, Microsoft is
still not saying much.
Microsoft officials are not discussing publicly how many users are affected by the
“endless reboot loop” problem that users are reporting
on Microsoft’s TechNet Forums. Microsoft officials also are not saying when or if they will issue new fixes that alleviate the problems.
The problem seems to affect both users who are using the SP1 Release Candidate (RC) 1 Refresh 2 bits (that came out in late
January), as well as those using the SP1`bits marked as “RTM” (that went live in early February).
Vista SP1 RC 1 Refresh 2 and the RTM build of Vista SP1 are the same, even though their build
numbers are different, Microsoft officials have admitted.

Windows Vista wasn't the biggest commercial success; many companies refused to use it initially, and are sticking with XP for now. It's

initial issues fixed. The news comes from Computer World, and states that it is now not allowed for government agencies to upgrade to Windows Vista,
because "of the many reports of problems with Vista." They say that they are not picking on Microsoft, but that they just don't trust the most
recent Windows operating system, and that Windows XP does everything they need to.
