Vista tips and tricks: changing boot options on the fly

There are a number of boot options that can be used in Vista and Windows Server 2008 that can be a pain to modify (or not possible if you are in a bugcheck loop), that can be done on the fly at boot time. These options are invaluable for diagnosing some problems you may experience on the system, and modifying them in the OS may involve figuring out the bcdedit syntax, the right BCD store to modify, or rebuilding and burning a new install DVD (if the problem is happening during install from media).

Some example boot switches you might want to use are...

Green PC running Vista highly unlikely say Green Party

Retailer PC World claims that it is working on the world's most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly PC, based partly on recycled components.

While this could be easily achieved using Vista Basic and it's superior to XP power management options, it seems the Green Party is more dazzled by the full capability of Vista Ultimate rendering capabilities citing it to be less 'green' than it's predecessor.

Vista has been roundly criticized by technologists and environmental campaigners alike for the fact that it will require more expensive and powerful hardware to run optimally. A spokesman for the Green Party suggested on Tuesday that the choice of Vista for a a so-called green machine could be a mistake, and called on retailers to offer more PCs without Windows pre-installed.

"It would be a good thing if PC World was to offer operating systems other than Vista. XP or no operating system pre-installed at all would be ideal," the Green Party spokesman told ZDNet UK.

Last month, the Party criticized Vista for requiring "more expensive and energy-hungry hardware, passing the cost on to consumers and the environment." This point has also been made by other experts in recent months.

How to defeat Cold DRAM attacks using BitLocker, Power Options, and Physical Security

Troy Arwine: Princeton University published a paper this week entitled: Lest We Remember: Cold Boot Attacks on Encryption Keys which shows how an attacker can extract the contents of DRAM from a computer that is powered off and retrieve the encryption keys from memory offline and decrypt disks that were encrypted by many popular disk encryption software such as Microsoft BitLocker, FileVault, dm-crypt, and TrueCrypt on Linux, Vista and Mac OS 10 using no special devices or materials.

Communicating Windows 7

Chris Flores: Typically when Microsoft ships a new OS (like Windows Vista), we immediately start talking about the next version-which begs two questions: 1) is Microsoft working on a new version of Windows, and if so, 2) why aren't you talking about it?

I thought I would spend a minute giving you an update on where we are. First, yes, we are working on a new version of Windows. As you likely know, it's called Windows 7.We are always looking for new ways to deliver great experiences for our customers. This is especially true of Windows - where we're constantly examining trends in hardware, software and services to ensure that we continue to drive the innovation that has both made Windows the world's most popular operating system and has provided a foundation on which our partners built great products and businesses. When we shipped Windows 2000, we were already working on Windows XP and we started working on Windows Vista even before we released Windows XP. So naturally, we've been thinking about the investments we made in Windows Vista and how we can build on these for the next version of Windows.

External SATA Devices To Drop Power Cables

The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) has announced that it is working on a new specification that will provide power to external SATA (eSATA) devices without the need for a separate power connection. Called "Power Over eSATA initiative", the specification is expected to be completed sometime in the second half of this year.

Devices taking advantage of the new spec no longer will require a separate power cable but will draw power for a single drive directly from the host system using the Power Over eSATA cable. The SATA-IO said that the new cable will remain compatible with the existing eSATA connector and support the current maximum interface transfer rate of 3Gb/s. Power Over eSATA products are expected to be available on the market as soon as the second half of 2008.

Windows Machines with More than 4 GB of RAM Have Limited Shut-Down Options

Windows Vista computers that come equipped with more than 4 GB of system memory have limited shut-down options. Essentially, the Hibernate option is no longer available on Vista machines that feature in excess of 4 GB of RAM. This scenario affects both the 32-bit and the 64-bit editions of Vista, but at the same time also Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has confirmed that the issue is related to the large quantity of random access memory.

"This issue occurs because hibernation is disabled on computers that
have more than 4 GB of RAM. Hibernation requires sufficient disk space to contain the contents of the computer's memory. Performance is poor on a computer that has more than 4 GB of memory and that has support for hibernation. Therefore, Microsoft has disabled support for hibernation on such computers," the Redmond company revealed.
