09.07.2008.NET Framework 3.0 SP1 & 2.0 SP1 on Vista RTM?
Aaron Ruckman: I've received the following type of question a few times and would like to give the answer with some background:
Q. Where is the .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 & 2.0 SP1 for Vista RTM?
A. .NET Framework 3.0 & 2.0 released with Vista as OS Windows
Components, which means that they are serviced as any other windows Component. Therefore, the .NET Framework 3.0 & 2.0 Service packages will be
officially released as part of the Vista Service packages. When Vista SPX is shipped then .NET Framework 2.0 & 3.0 might also include updates in that
service package.
In this case the .NET Framework 3.0 & 2.0 have a service package that will be shipped with Vista
SP1. Vista SP1 RC is available now (
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb738089.aspx)
NOTE: The same logic stated for Vista and .NET Framework will also be true for Windows2008 & .NET Framework 2.0 & 3.0, only Windows
Server2008 will release with .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 & 3.0 SP1 in the OS.

29.01.2009Don't wait for Windows 7: realize the benefts of Vista now
Some customers are considering whether to deploy Windows Vista or whether to skip in anticipation of Windows 7.
The discussion is often phrased
as one of balancing costs and timing of releases. By not deploying Windows Vista, it means missing out on the proven benefts such as better security,
productivity, search, mobility, manageability, and infrastructure optimization. Windows Vista works with more applications and devices than ever
before and can be signifcantly less expensive to support than Windows XP SP3.
There is no need to wait for Windows 7. It is a goal of the
Windows 7 release to minimize application compatibility for customers who have deployed Windows Vista since there was considerable kernel and device
level innovation in Windows Vista. The Windows 7 release is expected to have only minor changes in these areas. Customers who are still using Windows
XP when Windows 7 releases will have a similar application compatibility experience moving to Windows 7 as exists moving to Windows Vista from Windows
XP.
Historically, mainstream deployment occurs not when Microsoft releases a product but 18 months later. While the mainstream deployment
cycle is beginning for Windows Vista now, it isn’t expected to begin for Windows 7 until at least mid-2011

06.06.2008ATI Driver Package Opens Vista to Flaw
In case you haven't seen it,
the ATI driver package can
potentially open your Vista
kernel up to a compromise. ATI
and MS are working to rectify
the issue.
In an interview, Ionescu

exploiting a vulnerability in
an ATI driver - atidsmxx.sys,
version 3.0.502.0 - to patch
the kernel to turn off certain
checks for signed drivers.
This meant that a malicious
rootkit author could
essentially piggyback on
ATI's legitimately signed
driver to tamper with the

05.06.2007SanDisk won't specify Vista SSD problems, but is 'working with Microsoft'
Amid complaints that Windows Vista is hurting the development of solid state drives, SanDisk now says it is working with Microsoft to optimize SSDs
for "the Windows experience." But the company refused to provide details of Vista's problem, and Microsoft seemed unaware of the collaboration.
In a statement to BetaNews today, Richard Heyes, who heads up SanDisk's SSD Business Unit, didn't elaborate on the areas of
optimization, although he did talk about SSD performance on "full-featured" operating systems such as Windows Vista vs. "simple" systems such as
XP Starter Edition -- and he predicted that operating systems in general will become more "SSD aware" in the future.

21.06.2007Windows Vista SP1 Deployment Info
A few quick bits that are noteworthy from the
Windows Vista SP1
Whitepaper regarding deployment.
Windows Vista SP1 will support the following delivery methods:
- Express. Requires an
Internet connection but minimizes the size of the download by sending only the changes needed for a specific computer (approximately 50 MB for
x86-based operating systems).
- Stand-alone. Recommended for computers with limited Internet connectivity and for applying the service
pack to multiple computers. The download size is larger than the express package, but customers can apply a single package to any Windows Vista
version and language combination (within a platform). Distribution tools like System Center Configuration Manager 2007 use stand-alone packages to
deploy Windows Vista SP1.
- Slipstream. The slipstream version of Windows Vista SP1 is media that already contains the service pack,
which companies can use to deploy the operating system to new computers or to upgrade existing computers. Availability will be limited. Microsoft will
update Windows Vista retail media with Windows Vista SP1 slipstream media in the future. Slipstream media will also be available to Volume Licensing
customers.
As also stated in the Whitepaper, "customers cannot apply SP1 to offline Windows Vista images," meaning that the Vista SP1 update
cannot be manually slipstreamed into a Vista RTM ISO. However, a method of repacking an install.wim with Vista SP1 integrated is available using our
Vista SP1 Integration Guide which still requires a complete install
of Vista RTM in order to reverse integrate it. While this may not be the most ideal method, it is at the moment the only method if one doesn't have
access to Microsoft's fully slipped SP1 ISO since availability will be limited.
