Don't wait for Windows 7: realize the benefts of Vista now

Some customers are considering whether to deploy Windows Vista or whether to skip in anticipation of Windows 7.
The discussion is often phrased as one of balancing costs and timing of releases. By not deploying Windows Vista, it means missing out on the proven benefts such as better security, productivity, search, mobility, manageability, and infrastructure optimization. Windows Vista works with more applications and devices than ever before and can be signifcantly less expensive to support than Windows XP SP3.

There is no need to wait for Windows 7. It is a goal of the Windows 7 release to minimize application compatibility for customers who have deployed Windows Vista since there was considerable kernel and device level innovation in Windows Vista. The Windows 7 release is expected to have only minor changes in these areas. Customers who are still using Windows XP when Windows 7 releases will have a similar application compatibility experience moving to Windows 7 as exists moving to Windows Vista from Windows XP.

Historically, mainstream deployment occurs not when Microsoft releases a product but 18 months later. While the mainstream deployment cycle is beginning for Windows Vista now, it isn’t expected to begin for Windows 7 until at least mid-2011

SanDisk won't specify Vista SSD problems, but is 'working with Microsoft'

Amid complaints that Windows Vista is hurting the development of solid state drives, SanDisk now says it is working with Microsoft to optimize SSDs for "the Windows experience." But the company refused to provide details of Vista's problem, and Microsoft seemed unaware of the collaboration.

In a statement to BetaNews today, Richard Heyes, who heads up SanDisk's SSD Business Unit, didn't elaborate on the areas of optimization, although he did talk about SSD performance on "full-featured" operating systems such as Windows Vista vs. "simple" systems such as XP Starter Edition -- and he predicted that operating systems in general will become more "SSD aware" in the future.

Tim Sweeney on UT3 Specs & Peformance

http://www.beyondunreal.com/da edalus/singlepost.php?id=10581 >Beyond Unreal noticed a http://forums.epicgames.com/sh owthread.php?t=571019>thread on the Epic Megaboards that translates a Tim Sweeney interview with German magazine, PC Games Hardware. Here are a couple juicy samples:

PCGH: How do the general hardware requirements look like?
Epic: Since optimization work is still ongoing, these details may change every day. Generally speaking, the game runs quite smooth with DX9 hardware released by NVidia and Ati since 2006. On high-end cards, including the DX10 models, UT3 runs incredibly smooth already. Additionally, we also support shader 2.0 graphics hardware, with only a few technical limitations.

PCGH: How exactly are you utilizing the functions of DirectX 10?
Epic: Unreal Tournament 3 will ship with full DX10 support, with multi-sampling being the biggest visible benefit of the new graphics interface. Additionally, with DX10 under Vista we have the possibility to use the video memory more efficiently, to be able to display textures with a higher grade of detail as it would be possible with the DX9 path of Vista. ..

SLI Under The Microscope: Vista vs. XP

Upon its release, it was expected that even the most ardent power users and enthusiasts were going to tread lightly at first with respect to adopting Windows Vista as their primary OS. Though end users in this demographic are classically early adopters, in terms of new hardware technologies coming to market, an operating system change brings with it a whole myriad of pitfalls, from backwards compatibility to stability and performance issues, which are all understood to be "part of the deal" with any new OS. In reality, many folks migrate to a new OS platform over time, opting to dip their toe carefully into the pool with less critical usage models, like running it on a backup machine or secondary notebook, for example, at least initially.

Gamers, on the other hand, are perhaps a breed apart, in that many are risk takers, (should we say thrill-seekers maybe?) willing to take it on the chin with their gaming rig in an effort to have the latest and greatest in both hardware and software technologies. In short, a risky new OS move to Vista is especially tempting for gamers, with the advent of DirectX 10, which is only supported by Microsoft's new OS.

However, our early findings were mixed with respect to Vista's gaming performance and certainly with a few games that had a DX10 rendering mode, performance just wasn't up to par with Windows XP, which has years of ring-out and performance optimization behind it. This all seemed logical but the view with Vista was even more bleak if you were running a pair of NVIDIA graphics cards in SLI mode. Performance in Vista on this type of system, in either DX9 or DX10 mode just wasn't where it needed to be.

Vista Pushes Volume Licensing

During Microsoft's annual financial analysts conference today, the company's chief operating officer boasted about increases in Windows volume licensing.

It's the "best rate we've seen in many, many years," Kevin Turner said of annuity licensing contracts. He acknowledged that Windows Vista Enterprise and MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack) were major drivers. Both products can only be purchased by way of volume licensing contract. By contrast, Windows XP Professional and supporting tools could be purchased without a volume licensing contract.

Turner said that about 42 millions PCs are covered by volume licensing. Among midsize businesses and enterprise, Windows annuity contract penetration is 19 percent, he said.

"I think it moved a point of two." Turner said about Windows volume licensing increases.

Historically, about 80 percent of Windows client revenue comes from OEMs. Microsoft wants to shiftsome could say forcecustomers to volume licensing, which would further smooth out Microsoft's balance sheet.
