hostile code into vulnerable systems, were disclosed in a posting to BugTraq on Friday.
The vulnerability affects Enterprise and
Ultimate versions of Vista in both 32 and 64 bit flavours of the operating system. XP is immune. Phion has published a workaround in the absence of a
fix from Microsoft itself...

02.01.2008Something New when Uninstalling Drivers and Devices on Windows Vista
Chris Mu: Today, I'd like to share a background story about a KB article that describe a interesting behavior in Windows Vista that is different with
previous OS. Maybe it is not the most important or highest impacted issue occurs in Windows Vista, but I think it will impact some of you when you are
troubleshooting for your firendes/family... OK, let go through this issue.
This issue is about re-install network adapter in
Windows Vista and the KB article for this issue will be KB945399 and published in a few days. The issue can be reproduced in many computer models and
you will encounter it when you uninstall a network adapter device using Device Manager. Maybe you have to troubleshoot whether the network adapter
driver installed is right to troubleshoot OS network issue. Therefore, after uninstall the adapter, you may try to install another driver for the
device ... Everything works fine in Windows XP/Server 2003 and so on. However, when you try to do same action in Windows Vista, the popular OS
nowadays, you will see soon after the uninstall process completes, PnP detects the network adapter as a new device and automatically installs the
device and drivers. Instead, in Windows XP, only after you click to scan hardware change, the PnP will detect the network adapter and install the
driver.

09.01.2008How to fix Vista's network bottlenecks
As much as I enjoy using Vista, I've definitely noticed that in some networking activities, it definitely seems to struggle. Particularly compared
with Windows XP.
For the most part it's not a problem - I just assumed that Vista's beefy network stack was responsible, and made a
mental note to fix it at some point. And then forgot.
But recently I encountered a really frustrating problem. Using Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP) to connect from a Vista Enterprise machine to a Windows 2003 server, the performance was so woeful that I was starting to worry whether
there was a problem with the server.
As it happens, my fears about the server were unfounded, but the thought that Vista's networking
stack was to blame turned out to be correct. The Next Generation TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista supports something called Receive Window Auto-Tuning.
This is nothing to do with the RDP "window" you see on the screen, but rather a TCP buffer which TCP/IP clients use to ensure smooth
transmission.

15.12.2005How to fix 3 "broken features" in Windows Vista
Certain problems with Vista won’t be fixed by service packs or by updates but rather were actually part of the design. Users got used to XP and
the way XP did things but Vista does some things differently. To help get your sanity back here are three things you can do to make Vista more
amiable.
First, let’s tackle UAC. Vista’s UAC enables account controls which requires you to specify program actions when they
need elevated permissions. The problem is that almost every action in Vista will require such. This can be turned off while still leaving the more
important virtualization protection in place.
There are two ways to do this, by using native commands in Vista which is a 6-step process
and should be avoided by everyone unless you want to create “Local Security Policy” specifically for that. I can’t recommend doing
so. Instead, download
Tweak UAC which will allow you to painlessly enable quiet mode.

A lot of you may have seen Internet Explorer crash "Internet Explorer has stopped working" when closing the browser in Windows Vista. It happens all
too often and while it no longer takes the operating system out with it, it is still annoying.
There are a lot of reasons why Internet
Explorer will do this, but one we have found that really stands out is Adobe's Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX
control. Seven (7) of
ten (10) IE 7 crashes I have personally seen, are related to the Flash Player plug-in.
