Sprint Unveils Movie Download Service

While some have questioned the viability of full-length video content on small screens, it appears that Sprint Nextel is concerned with none of that. The wireless provider on Monday launched a new service that will allow its cellular users to view full-length television shows, movies, concerts, and specials.

Sprint has called on MSpot, a California-based mobile entertainment company founded last year, to provide the service. Subscribers with compatible video cell phones will be able to add the feature to their wireless plans for an additional $6.95 uSD per month.

Windows Live Movie Maker starts from scratch, plans big

Good to see the Windows Live Wire blog start to focus on Wave 3, this time with a good post by Eric Doerr on Windows Live Movie Maker.  If youve taken a look at Windows Live Movie Maker, youve no doubt noticed that it is, well, lacking.  Eric explains in the post, however, that because of advances in the way that we create and use digital video, Microsoft decided to start over from scratch with Windows Live Movie Maker, including revamping the UI to make use of the œribbon interface common to Office 2007 applications.

Microsoft cuts apps from Windows 7

Microsoft has decided that Windows 7 won't include built-in programs for e-mail, photo editing, and movie making, as was done with Windows Vista.

The software maker included Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Mail, and Windows Movie Maker as part of Vista, but later chose to offer separate downloadable Windows Live programs that essentially replaced those components with versions that could connect to online services from Microsoft and others.

Free video-editing software

Peter Butler: One of the most frequent questions I get from CNET Download.com users is "What free software can I use to edit video?" If I didn't respond to you personally, it's likely because there's not an easy answer. It depends on what type of video you have, and what you want to do with it.

Let's start with the basics. If you didn't know, you likely already have Windows Movie Maker, which was included with Windows XP Service Pack 2, and recently beefed up for Windows Vista.

The XP version of Movie Maker is adequate for putting together clips into larger videos, adding simple transitions, and making basic edits, but I can't recommend the experience. The review on CNET Download.com is overly harsh, but it encapsulates several problems you may encounter.

Microsoft tactics push India toward Linux

One of India's 28 states plans to distribute 100,000 Linux laptops to students there. It sounds like Tamil Nadu's volume purchasing agent decided to use Linux exclusively after being put off by Microsoft's bundling tactics for academic users.

The laptops will be purchased in volume by Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), which works as a volume purchaser for students in the state. Tamil Nadu is the Southern-most of India's 28 states, and home to the technology center of Chennai (formerly known as "Madras"). ELCOT says it will purchase more than 100,000 laptops this year, selling them to Indian students for about $800, a considerable mark-down compared to retail value, it says.

Vista Pushes Volume Licensing

During Microsoft's annual financial analysts conference today, the company's chief operating officer boasted about increases in Windows volume licensing.

It's the "best rate we've seen in many, many years," Kevin Turner said of annuity licensing contracts. He acknowledged that Windows Vista Enterprise and MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack) were major drivers. Both products can only be purchased by way of volume licensing contract. By contrast, Windows XP Professional and supporting tools could be purchased without a volume licensing contract.

Turner said that about 42 millions PCs are covered by volume licensing. Among midsize businesses and enterprise, Windows annuity contract penetration is 19 percent, he said.

"I think it moved a point of two." Turner said about Windows volume licensing increases.

Historically, about 80 percent of Windows client revenue comes from OEMs. Microsoft wants to shiftsome could say forcecustomers to volume licensing, which would further smooth out Microsoft's balance sheet.

About those 100 million Vista licenses¦

Ed Bott: My colleague Mary Jo Foley reported earlier today on Microsofts claim that it has sold 100 million retail copies of Windows Vista. During Bill Gates keynote address last night I heard him say, œIm pleased to say that weve got over 100 million people using Vista now.

Thats a stretch.

I tracked down a Microsoft spokesperson today who was just as surprised as I was to hear that sentence coming from the keynote stage. The spokesperson confirmed for me that those 100 million copies represent licenses, not confirmed users. And the total includes copies sold through all channels, including those preinstalled on OEM computers, copies sold as retail upgrades or full packaged product (FPP), and volume licenses sold to corporate customers.

Microsoft: 88 Million Copies of Vista Shipped

Despite frequent reports of Windows Vista being a failure, Microsoft Corporation has now shipped 88 million copies of its latest operating system, almost double the number of copies of XP in the same amount of time at its launch. CFO Chris Liddell credited strong sales in emerging markets, due in part to anti-piracy and legalization programs there. Microsoft had previously said that it had shipped 20 million copies of Vista in its first month, 40 million copies of Vista in the first 100 days, and 60 million in late July.

Three-quarters of the copies sold of Vista were Home Premium editions. The 88 million figure mostly includes Vista-installed PCs bought by consumers and small businesses, as well as packaged copies of Vista sold in stores or online. It does exclude the tens of millions of Windows corporate volume licenses. There, many enterprises continue to hold off on deploying Vista, acknowledged CFO Chris Liddell, though he expects them to start deploying it when Vista Service Pack 1 arrives in the first quarter of next year. Nevertheless, revenue from companies renewing their volume licenses for Windows, which gives them the right to upgrade to Vista, was up 27%.

Volume Activation 2.0: Another Potential Vista Gotcha?

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) isn't the only Microsoft anti-piracy scheme that might raise the hackles of future Vista customers. Volume Activation 2.0 is worrying some Vista testers who've had a chance to dabble with early versions of that technology.

Potential false positives - Microsoft labeling legitimate copies of Windows as "pirated" - akin to those which have been documented in WGA by Windows expert Ed Bott and others, are just one problem business users are anticipating with Volume Activation 2.0. Increased costs resulting from the management of Volume Activation systems is another, they say.

For those who've yet to hear about it, Volume Activation is a new digital-license activation technology aimed at businesses. It's part of the larger "Software Protection Platform" that Microsoft is constructing to combat piracy. In short, Microsoft is not going to allow enterprises to operate on an honor system, when it comes to proving how many copies of Windows they've paid to license. Just like it does with individual Windows users, Microsoft is going to start requiring companies to authenticate their new versions of Windows within 30 days of installing.
