Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Mac OS X "Tiger
From Paul Thurrotte's SuperSite:
In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.
. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

Windows Vista's share of
online users has increased
every month this year, while
rival Mac OS X -- to which

reports.
According to
Net

Windows Vista accounted for
4.52% of all systems that
browsed the Web, up from
January's 0.18%. Vista grew
its usage share each month
since its release to consumers
Jan. 30, hitting 0.93% in
February, 2.04% in March,
3.02% in April and 3.74% in
May. Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X,
meanwhile, accounted for 6.22%
in January, hit its high point
of 6.46% in May, but slipped
back to 6% in June.
If Vista's uptake trend
continues, it should pass Mac
OS X in Web usage share by the
end of August. ..

Mac OS X -- which included
older editions running on
PowerPC processors as well as

6.46%. Vista was up about
three-quarters of a percentage
point from April, while Mac OS

Their gains came
largely at the expense of
earlier versions of Windows,

10.01.2006Proof of concept adware program for OS X announced
Online fraudsters may be ready
to put Mac users in their
sights. On Thursday, antivirus
firm F-Secure published a
brief analysis of a
proof-of-concept adware
program for the Mac OS X that
could theoretically hook into
any application to run
attacker-specified code. The
program, dubbed IAdware by
F-Secure, could be silently
installed in a user's account
without requiring
administrator rights.
We won't disclose the exact
technique used here - it's a
feature not a bug - but let's
just say that installing a
System Library shouldn't be
allowed without prompting the
user," stated F-Secure in the
blog post. "Especially as it
only requires copy
permissions."
Vulnerability researchers
have increasingly focused on
finding flaws in the Mac OS.
During the month of November,
two serious flaws in Apple's
operating system were
disclosed as part of the Month
of Kernel Bugs (MoKB) project.
The IAdware proof-of-concept
code did nothing malicious,
but merely opened up a browser
each time an application was
opened, F-Secure stated.

26.11.2006Contest winner: Vista more secure than Mac OS

who took home $10,000 in a

at the center of a week's
worth of controversy about the
security of Apple's operating
system. In an e-mail interview
with Computerworld, Dai Zovi
talked about how finding
vulnerabilities is like
fishing, the chances that
someone else will stumble on
the still-unpatched bug, and
what operating system -
Windows Vista or Mac OS X - is
the sturdiest when it comes to
security.
From
your research on both
platforms, is there a winner
between Mac OS X 10.4 and
Vista on security?
"I have found the code
quality, at least in terms of
security, to be much better
overall in Vista than Mac OS X
10.4. It is obvious from
observing affected components
in security patches that
Microsoft's Security
Development Lifecycle (SDL)
has resulted in fewer
vulnerabilities in
newly-written code. I hope
that more software vendors
follow their lead in
developing proactive software
security development
methodologies."

20.06.2008Mac OS X 10.6 Brings Serious Performance Gains
While our focus at Phoronix is on testing hardware under Linux, we remain friendly and interested in other BSD and UNIX operating systems too,

advancements that have been made in this update thanks to their large focus on improving the performance of Mac OS X. With that said, we have spent

numbers available concerning Snow Leopard, but we already have more figures on the way. We have performance numbers from not just one Mac computer,

29.08.2009Mac OS X with 100 bugs: Still safer than Windows?
Apple has plugged around 100
vulnerabilities in OS X so far
this year, but the malware
threat to Mac customers is
insignificant compared to
users of Microsoft Windows.
So far this year,
Apple users have been exposed
to the kind of vulnerabilities
that are more commonly
associated with Windows. The
Mac maker has plugged security
flaws that could have resulted
in OS X customers being
"owned" by basic actions
such as visiting a malicious
website, watching a video file
or opening an email
attachment.
However,
despite all these
vulnerabilities, the Mac's
resilient platform, its
advanced automatic software
update tools and the apparent
lack of attention from malware
authors means Apple users are
far safer from attack than
users of Windows.
"There are no viruses
really for OS X there have
been a few but, from that
point of view, the likelihood
of you getting hit on an Apple
is insignificant compared to
PCs," said Patrik Runald,
senior security specialist at
antivirus firm F-Secure...
