Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Office 2007 SP1 Update Availability Clarification

Bobbie Harder: Posting this as I've noted just a little bit of confusion with how Office 2007 SP1 is made available for download after it's release yesterday. As you know, Office 2007 SP1 was released yesterday to Microsoft Update, and to WSUS as part of the Tues, Dec 11th release.

As planned, Office 2007 SP1 was not pushed via Automatic Updates. There has been some confusion where Windows Vista customers are seeing Office 2007 SP1 listed as available with an option to install in their Windows Update control panel applet. The new Vista experience of the Windows Update applet combines the convenience of the Microsoft Update site, by isting all applicable available updates, and the best of the Automatic Updates behavior. This allows users to specify what update types they want to automatically download and install (and when), as well as combines the interactive experience of the Microsoft Update site.

Office Trial Causes Channel Conflict

Microsoft's Office Trial conversion program is so successful, the company now clearly competes with its retail and dealer partners.

The signs were there in February, when we said the Office Trial program "could" cause channel conflict. There's no more "could" about it.

Microsoft now has 9 percent dollar share for the U.S. retail productivity suite market, according to NPD. Chris Swenson, NPD's director of software industry analysis, largely attributed Microsoft's market share gains to Office Trial conversions.

Microsoft offers the trials through a number of venues, including direct from the Web or on new PCs. Microsoft also directly fulfills Office conversions. Users can purchase activation codes directly from Microsoft via the Web.

Office 2003 SP3 on Microsoft Update in 1 Month

Office 2003 SP3, released to customers on September 18, 2007, will become ready for automatic distribution via Microsoft Update (for Vista and XP) starting February 27, 2008. This means that the availability will happen gradually and not everyone will see it at the same time. The delay is there to give the market plenty of time to evaluate the service pack and allow the Office team to address concerns. The service pack includes improved security and enhanced compatibility with Windows Vista, Office 2007, Internet Explorer 7 and Windows SharePoint Services. According to the MU team, the customer feedback for SP3 has been generally positive.

Just over 30 days until Office 2003 SP3 available via Microsoft Update automatic distribution

The MU and Office Team: Just wanted to give you a heads up on our promised 30 days notice before making Office 2003 SP3 available via Microsoft Update automatic distribution (for Vista and XP). We released SP3 for Office 2003 to customers about 4 months ago. Since then weve heard some great feedback on what it is doing for customers be it in the enterprise, consumer, or other segments. In some cases people probably dont even know that its working for them, which is just perfect. The security improvements are working just like they should in that case :).

That said, we wanted to use the MU blog as one of many avenues to alert our customers to the fact that we will be distributing SP3 automatically via Microsoft Update approximately 30 days from January 27th. We say approximately because the availability will happen gradually and not everyone will see it at the same time. Think of the 27th as the marker and no sooner than 30 days from then is when SP3 will start to become available to customers' systems.

Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days

Official Way to Install and Use Windows Vista without Activation for Free for 120 Days

By default, Windows Vista can be installed, used and run without any license, product key or the need of activation for 30 days grace period, for purpose of trial or evaluation. Although Microsoft initially stressed that users should purchase a license with valid product key before the trial period expires, or else Windows Vista will lock into Reduced Functionality Mode. However, a "rearm" method has long since been discovered to be able to extend, or reset the remaining time for activation to another fresh 30 days, for up to 3 times.

Now Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months ( 3 rearms ), and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). All versions of Vista include Windows Vista Ultimate allow a 30-day free period without activation, except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial.

Office 2007 Hold-Up Likely to Affect Vista

Citing "performance issues", Microsoft said last week that it will not release Office 2007 to enterprises until "the end of 2006". The consumer launch will take place some time in "early 2007".

But David Bradshaw, an analyst with Ovum, said: "It seems sensible to keep Office 2007 in step with Vista, and Vista is already delayed, so this is not entirely surprising to us.

"There is wide speculation that Vista will be delayed again, and this would be an embarrassment for Microsoft.

"Vista is a much more ambitious project than Office 2007, and has already seen several delays. Microsoft may face the same decision again: whether to postpone Office 2007 or launch it without Vista."

The analyst suggested that delaying Office 2007 will have a minimal impact on Microsoft's product revenues as most customers will buy Office only when they need it, for example when they upgrade to new computers.

The rescheduling marks the second delay to Office 2007 this year. Microsoft said in March that it would hold back the release to coincide with the launch of Windows Vista.
