Windows Vista CTP Program Ends

It has been revealed, by visiting the Windows Vista Beta Pre-Registration page, that the Windows Vista Community Technology Preview (CTP) program, which provided download access to the CTP builds, has now come to an end. This could well mean that we can expect public betas in the near future.

Though the preview program has ended, Microsoft are continuing to offer valid registration codes for enterprise customers, ISVs, SIs, LARs/VARs, and SBCs. These select codes can be used to receive a replicated copy of the latest CTP version in the mail.

Vista February CTP, Complete?

In early December of 2005, Microsoft had announced that they were to ship a code-complete version of Windows Vista internally by the end of 2005 to prepare for a CTP of the code-complete build to be issued to testers. However this never happened. Microsoft now plans to have an internal build of the code-complete Vista by early February.

However, the next CTP, due out on February 17th, apparently predates the code-complete version; therefore, the February CTP might not in fact be the code-complete build.

Currently, Microsoft is internally testing build 5293 of Vista, which means the February CTP build might be within the 5300 range.

Microsoft renames it's Windows Vista sucessor (formerly codename 'Blackcomb') Vienna

Although Microsoft is hard at work trying to ship Windows Vista this year, the company is beginning to set its sights on the next horizon, Vienna.

Vienna, once labeled Blackcomb, is the new code name for the successor to Vista. It is not clear when Vienna might ship or what features it might contain. Microsoft confirmed the name change on Friday, but declined to comment on Vienna's stage of development.

"The 'Blackcomb' code name has been changed to 'Vienna,' but we do not have any other details to share on timing or focus," Microsoft said. "This does not reflect a big change for us; we have used city code names in the past, which are derived from cities/locations in the world known for great 'vistas'--the kinds of places we all want to see, experience and that capture the imagination. Vienna fits with this concept."

The code name for Windows XP was Whistler, a Canadian ski resort. Blackcomb was also a ski resort, while Longhorn (Vista's code name) came from the Longhorn Saloon, which was about halfway between Whistler and Blackcomb...

Bermuda to Put RFID in All Vehicles on Island

This month, Bermuda's Transport Control Department, a division of the tiny string of island's Ministry of Tourism, plans an island-wide deployment of electronic vehicle registration made up of RFID tags, antennas, readers and a database system. Over the next five years, the program is expected to generate over $11 million in lost fees from unlicensed and uninsured vehicles.

A unique identification number will be established for each vehicle registered on the island; each number is then linked to a record in a centralized vehicle database. As car owners have their vehicles inspected or registered they will receive a tamper-resistant windshield sticker embedded with an RFID tag which, when read by a specially equipped RFID reader, will send off information in encrypted code to TCD's database where it is linked to a record in the vehicle database.

The vehicle database itself identifies vehicles, and the EVR system retains only photo images of non-compliant or criminal vehicles. A back-office violation processing system will automatically generate citations, while the EVR system itself will validate commercial vehicle registration and issue violations. Bermuda will also receive a network of fixed reader points that will verify vehicle registration and compliance. In sting-like operations transportable, tripod-mounted readers and handheld readers will be used for screening vehicles at random locations. In addition to tracking down errant registration and vehicle inspections, the system will automate emissions and insurance compliance as well. 3M, which develops vehicle registration systems, is designing and implementing Bermuda's RFID-based system.

Microsoft Releases More Information About Vista Source Code in China

Microsoft has announced further plans to open the Vista source code in China.

Microsoft has reportedly signed a new government security program source code agreement with China Information Technology Security Certification Center, allowing CNITSEC and other approved institutions to look over the source code and relevant technical data of Microsoft's products, including Windows Vista, so as to improve their evaluation on the security of Microsoft products. The agreement is an important part of the MOU signed between National Development and Reform Commission and Microsoft in April 2006.

Microsoft's Government Security Program helps government departments and international organizations evaluate the security of Microsoft products. CNITSEC previously signed an agreement with Microsoft on security source code in February 2003 and was authorized to check over the company's major source code and technical data.

Microsoft's move should bring good results in the promotion of information security and enhancement of mutual trust between China and the United States.

Microsoft Bakes Windows AntiSpyware into Vista

Microsoft has confirmed plans to bundle anti-spyware protection into Windows Vista, a move that is sure to raise eyebrows among competitors and possibly antitrust regulators.
The Windows AntiSpyware product, which currently ships to consumers as a free standalone application, will be integrated into Vista, as is indicated in the newest beta build of Vista distributed to technical beta testers on Monday.

"The core Windows AntiSpyware functionality gets built in," said Greg Sullivan, lead Windows product manager. "For unmanaged environments???home and small business users???we want to provide base-level security services."

The actual anti-spyware code was not included in the second CTP (Community Technology Preview) release of Vista (Build 5231), but visual evidence was found in the "Security Center," a built-in feature that lets users manage settings for security patching, Internet options and the embedded firewall...

Symantec: Windows Vista less Secure than XP

According to Symantec, Windows Vista is very likely to be less secure than Windows XP by the time it comes out. Symantec has supposedly already found many security flaws in Windows Vista's networking code. Symantec also says Vista's new code is what is problematic.

According to the Symantec report, "Microsoft has removed a large body of tried and tested code and replaced it with freshly written code, complete with new corner cases and defects. This may provide for a more stable networking stack in the long term, but stability will suffer in the short term."

This is obviously surprising for Microsoft employees, who have declared so many times that Vista would be more secure than XP. Microsoft answered by a simple explanation that the software is still in beta stage and that numerous improvements would be made until it comes out.
