10-year-old daughter, his
oldest child, was not a
hard-core Internet and
computer user until this year,
when she started at a school
where the students use tablet
computers for almost
everything.
"She became very avid and
discovered a lot of computer
games, including one that runs
on the Xbox 360 called Viva
Pinata, where you take care of
your garden," he told a
business audience in
Ottawa.
"She could spend two or
three hours a day on this Viva
Pinata, because it's kind of
engaging and fun."
Gates said he and
his wife Melinda decided to
set a limit of 45 minutes a
day of total screen time for
games and an hour a day on
weekends, plus what time she
needs for homework.
Microsoft's new
Vista software enables parents
to control the Web sites their
kids go to but also includes
an audit log that records
sites they have visited and
whom they've been Instant
Messaging.
"Up to some age, to be
determined, it's very
appropriate for a parent to
get a sense of what they're
seeing out there and be able
to have conversations about
it," he said.
"My son said,
'Am I going to have limits
like this my whole life?',
and I said, 'No, when you
move away you can set your own
screen limits'," Gates

technology to version 10.1. DirectX 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of Vista Service Pack 1, concomitantly with
the official release of Build 6001.16659. Although the testing milestones of Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP SP3 Beta, are officially
limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of Windows Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft,
and simultaneously test drive DirectX 10.1.
However, Vista users have to understand that DirectX 10.1, as well as DirectX 10 is a
technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series. According to an AMD whitepaper
focused on the implementation of DirectX 10.1 in the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series, the latest application programming interface from Microsoft, manages
to "unlock the state of the art in GPU technology."

Make no mistake: Microsoft has moved beyond Windows Vista, which will become all too apparent during this week's Professional Developer
Conference. Windows 7 is the future, and in many ways it's the present, too. Contrary to ridiculous assertions recently made by Microsoft CEO
Steve Ballmer, Windows Vista is a flop. If businesses aren't buying Vista, after waiting six (now seven) years, it's no success. Yet, during
the last day of the Gartner 2008 expo 10 days ago, Steve asserted that Vista "has been extremely successful."
A few days earlier, Steve
boasted: "Vista is our best-selling product ever. So, if that takes too much getting over—we're not going to have products that are much
more successful than Vista has been. We sold over 180 million copies in the first 18 months, quite successful." Really?
But who's
buying this "best-selling" product ever? "We have 180 million users, mostly on the consumer market," Steve said in an Oct. 2 speech. Oh? According
to Gartner analysts Neil MacDonald and David Smith, only about 10 percent of enterprises have adopted Windows Vista. That's not a high number,
particularly in context of the approximately six years between Windows XP and Vista.

Moore's Law, one of the most widely known laws in the computing world, may not have much longer to live. According to Gordon Moore, co-founder of
Intel and best known for his theory predicting that transistor sizes would decrease by 50% every 18 to 24 months, fundamental physical limits will
prevent engineers from further chip shrinkages within the next 15 years. He announced this prediction at the Intel Developer Forum.
" In
another decade, decade and half or something, we will hit something that is fundamental, " Moore said when asked if there would be an end to his
'law'. But he also pointed out that there always have been fundamental barriers that prevented chip technologies from further advancing. " There
really are some fundamental limits. It's been amazing to me how the technologies have been able to keep pushing those out ahead of us. As long as I
can remember, the fundamental limits are two, three generations out. So far we have been able to get around them. "

With the release of MacOS X Leopard, the comparisons between Vista and Leopard are out in force. Windows Vista had a rough start and has taken its
share of beatings on-line including here at Neowin.net.
But after 9 months of availability, Vista has shaped up nicely and SP1 looks to
massauge most of the remaining complaints with Microsofts new OS.
Moreover, it is often easy to forget just how big of a release Windows
Vista really was. While Leopard claims "300 new features" most of those features are minor in nature (Lets face it, MacOS X is so good that
its in the enviable position of only needing to evolve, Windows Vista, by contrast, had to play a lot of catch-up). Windows Vista has closer to
10,000 new features when one adds both major and minor updates to the mix.

Throughout 2007, according to reports by Net Applications, Mac OS increased its market share by 3.15% while Vista managed to grab 10.48% market share.
Windows XP lost 8.39% of the OS market share in the same time period, quite unsurprising considering Vista is its successor, while Linux increased by
0.26%. Nothing too mind-boggling, but definitely interesting, to say the least. At the end of December 2007, the (incomplete) standings are as
follows:

Just days away from Microsofts first year anniversary of Vista Business RTM on Nov 30, the last year has felt like Vista has been in a perpetual beta,
just like all those Web 2.0 sites. As SP1 draws near, is the Vista blister finally healing, or should Microsoft scrap the lot as some pundits have
advised and go back to XP SP3?
What a year it has been for technology. Vista and Mac OS X 10.5 both launched, with Vista to
retail on Jan 30, although it was available to business from Nov 30 last year, while OS X 10.5 launched only a few weeks ago.
On
the graphical front, both Vista and OS X 10.5 have sported some nice eye candy, but the eye candy award of the year has to go to the Apple iPhone
interface, bringing the interface of handheld devices into the 21st century and showing desktop interfaces a thing or two about human interaction.

Won't Ship on Time
Earlier this week Bill Gates
said there was an 80 percent
chance Windows Vista would
ship in January 2007 as
scheduled.
At
the time I said "I wouldn't
make any bets with odds like
that," and neither would Mac
developer Wil Shipley--he
wants to bet Bill $10,000 that
Vista won't ship by next
January, and he's giving the
Microsoft chairman 3 to 1 odds
(which, for the
math-challenged, is better
than Bill's 80%, or
4:1).
Of
course, Gates will never take
him or anyone else (except
maybe Ballmer or Allchin) up
on that bet, but it would be
nice to see him put his money,
as Shipley says, where his
mouth is.
