Windows Vista Keygen a Hoax

Thanks to dw2003 for submitting this to the Front Page.

KezNews forum member Computer User , quickly infamous for releasing his Brute Force Keygen to the world, has confessed the piece of software isn't all it was hyped up to be. " Fact is the brute force keygen is a joke, I never intended for it to work. I have never gotten it to work, everyone should stop using it! " This is quite a shocking statement for the simple reason that many have already reported that they have found keys which activate just fine. " Everyone who said they got a key a probably lying or mistaken! " Either the author of the program has decided he does not want to get in trouble, or he is genuinely telling the truth. In short, the generator does work, but it is a very impractical crack.

Ballmer: Pirates won't have it easy with Vista

Yesterday a Neowin member linked to a DIGG article that was sourcing this website with a screenshot of a supposed key generator for Windows Vista. Since last night it has been updated and the poster claims to of gotten hold of the keygen in a non-working state. Elaborate hoax or the real deal?

The screenshot lower on this page shows DLL errors when running the keygen and it clearly states on the web site that it didn't work. The crack appears to be of Russian origin and only time will tell if Microsoft's "dial in" feature really has been circumvented.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told Wall Street analysts that the company might "dial up" the intensity of antipiracy technology baked into Windows Vista as part of an effort to squeeze more revenue from China, India, Brazil, Russia and other emerging markets.

Ballmer's comments came during a conference call with financial analysts in which he repeatedly hammered home the theme that sales forecasts for Windows -- Vista in particular -- have been "overly optimistic."

One way Microsoft can bump up Windows sales is to tighten the screws on pirates, Ballmer said. "Piracy reduction can be a source of Windows revenue growth, and I think we'll make some piracy improvements this year."

"We have new technologies built into Windows Vista, something we call Windows Genuine Advantage we've really dialed up in capabilities with the Vista release," he said. "I do think that will bring some revenue growth. We will have strong growth in the Windows business in emerging markets: China, India, Brazil, Russia and many others. Those markets are very high piracy."

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. But in a strange surprise, the trojan would modify the users host file, rather than generating a key, changing popular torrent web sites like, The Pirate Bay, Suprbay (The Pirate Bay forum) and Mininova, the two most popular torrent sites on the internet to 127.0.0.1, making it impossible to visit these sites. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Neowin at Digital Life 2007: Microsoft's Booth

Microsoft took a three pronged approach to their booth this year. They decided to focus on Vista (again), Games for Windows, and Windows Mobile. Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 and Halo 3 were not highlighted in the least bit.

It actually surprised me to see Microsoft pushing Vista so hard, still. Compared to last year, before Vista was released, this year's Vista display was even larger and more in your face. There were more kiosks, sofas, and lots of Vista logos on anything that could bare one. We know about Vista, though, so let's move on.

Microsoft won't ditch Vista until at least 2011

Even after the release of Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft won't be quick to ditch Vista according to Computer World. Microsoft plans to continue selling Vista until January 2011. However, they will drop support for Vista in less than 3 years. This seems to go against an earlier hint by a Microsoft General Manager that the company would get rid of Vista as soon as Windows 7 was released. However, Microsoft not ditching Vista as soon as Windows 7 is released shouldn't come as a surprise. It's a company policy to keep an OS in distribution for 4 years after its debut. So what do you think, Neowin?

CES: Where Vista Wasn't

Windows Vista was everywhereand yet nowhere at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

Vista was everywhere, because the operating system was on most PCs. But it was nowhere, in terms of branding and marketing. Microsoft banners and other promotional material reverted to "Windows" branding with no "Vista." Where Microsoft had Vista, something else accompanied it, like Windows Live, Media Center or Windows Media Extender.

Now what does that say about Vista, the brand and Microsoft's commitment to Windows XP's successor? Has Microsoft given up on Windows Vistaas a brand, at least? The answer is perhaps yes.
