Microsoft's worst run project: Windows 2000

Microsofts Iain McDonald, director of project management for Windows Server, says the worst run project at the software giant was Windows 2000.

That tidbit comes from an interview Mary Jo Foley just posted.

To folks that arent familiar with the intricacies of Microsoft this revelation is a bit of a stunner. Was Windows 2000 really a worse run project than Vista, which had a do-over in the middle of the project? Windows ME? That couldnt have been so hot. When you ponder all of Microsofts worst hits“and the projects behind them“Windows 2000 doesnt instantly register. In fact, Ed Bott gave Windows 2000 a 9 on a 10 scale in his rating of Windows versions...

Clearing up the confusion on Vista licensing and key management

Since Windows Vista has been released to the public, there has been a lot of confusion and hype surrounding some of the licensing decisions and restrictions with which Microsoft Corp. saddled the operating system and its many versions. Additionally, there's a new type of product key and a volume key management system that you might not know about. In this article, I'll take a look at five distinct points about Vista licensing and key management and give you the most current answers to what I've found are the most common questions about those topics.

SSDs run best on Windows 2000, Patriot claims

If Microsoft really wants to tweak solid-state drive performance in Windows 7, then perhaps it only needs to look back. As ComputerWorld reports, Patriot Memory claims that the venerable Windows 2000 out performs its modern successors when running on SSDs.

Patriot reportedly found Windows 2000 to be "5% to 8% faster" than OSes like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux, although the report doesn't say exactly what tests those numbers apply to. Patriot Engineering Manager Saeed Arash Far commented that Vista actually outperformed XP in the same benchmarks, but Windows 2000 trumped them both.

VIA announces PadLock RSA module for Microsoft Windows

VIA has announced the VIA PadLock RSA Module, which utilizes the strength and speed of the VIA PadLock Security Engine integrated into all VIA C7 family processors, to accelerate public key encryption such as RSA used in Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Designed to help in the fight against Internet fraud, the VIA PadLock RSA Module works by accelerating the process of public key authentication in Microsoft applications, thereby enabling users to utilize longer authentication keys, making it more difficult for computer criminals to break and so enhancing security in a wide range of Internet and network applications, such as online banking and e-commerce, says VIA. The VIA PadLock RSA Module works in PCs running Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 Professional, as well as servers with Windows Server "Longhorn", Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000 Server, the company adds.

Once installed, all Microsoft applications which use RSA as standard or the default CSP (cryptographic service provider) can utilize the VIA PadLock RSA Module to offload some of the public key encryption process to the VIA PadLock Security Engine, a hardware security engine integrated into VIA C7 processors, accelerating the process by as much as 275%, claims VIA.

Microsoft's Vista 'Family Discount' Troubles

In the past, early adopters of new Windows versions have had some small hurdles to overcome. Such hurdles may be software incompatibility, or lack of driver support. These sorts of things are almost expected with each new Windows launch. But what would you do if you bought Windows Vista and your product key didn't work. What if Microsoft had no solution and was unwilling to issue you a new key?

Many (if not all) users who took advantage of Microsoft's Vista Family Discount have been issued invalid installation keys and cannot install Windows Vista Home Premium. Microsoft confirms that the keys are indeed valid, but not for Windows Vista. The CSR I spoke with was unable to tell what the key was for, but it did appear to be a valid key, for something.

Microsoft says, This is a known issue and has been escalated to the program manager. When asked what could be done I was told, I can take your name and number and call you back when there is a solution. If that is not acceptable, I can cancel your order and issue you a refund. I was also told, There is no expected time period for a fix at this time.

Enable Aurora Bootscreen in Windows Vista

The original Vista Bootscreen is very similar to Windows 2000, and is very bland and boring (you know, with the little catepillar bar scrolling from left-to-right). But did you know that Vista comes with a much better highly visual bootscreen? Did you know how easy it is to enable it? No?

Microsoft may not have enabled this by default because of potential hardware issues, but that doesnt make sense because the minimum video card requirements to even run Vista should handle the new bootscreen without any problem. In either case, here is how to make Vista look that much cooler with the "Aurora" bootscreen...

More Windows Vista Packaging and Disc

Take a look at how the Windows Vista packaging will open up to reveal the media inside. Also, it is our first peak at what the Windows Vista discs will actually look like.

I like what they've done with the disc. The design on the disc is unique and fresh. Microsoft has adopted pretty much the same looking holographic CD/DVD's since Windows 2000 and its nice to see it be given a fresh new look - which seems to be a reoccurring theme with the Windows Vista packaging in general.

Vista 'Family Discount' Bites Back

In the past, early adopters of new Windows versions have had some small hurdles to overcome. Such hurdles may be software incompatibility, or lack of driver support. If Microsoft does not have this issue fixed very soon, they are going to have a lot of unhappy customers. In the past Microsoft has just issued new keys when this happened. Why is Microsoft being so tight gripped about handing out new keys? If I purchased a valid key, what is it for? How long is this going to take to fix? So many questions, so little answers.

Exploits hot on the heels of Microsoft's patches

Exploits appeared within hours for two of the bugs that Microsoft Corp. fixed yesterday.

Microsoft's June set of security updates patched 15 separate vulnerabilities, nine of them labeled "critical," the company's most serious threat rating. Exploit code for two of the bugs -- one in Internet Explorer (IE), the other in Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 -- have been posted to the Bugtraq and Full-disclosure mailing lists by researchers.

A. Micalizzi went public with a pair of exploits -- one successful against Windows 2000, the other against Windows XP -- that leverage one of the six IE bugs patched yesterday. A bug -- actually two because both the ActiveListen and ActiveVoice ActiveX controls are flawed -- was tagged "critical" in IE6 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2, and "critical" in IE7 on both XP SP2 and Windows Vista. ActiveListen and ActiveVoice provide speech processing and text-to-speech to the browser. ..

Apple unfazed by Windows 7 launch, says Analyst

The launch of Windows 7 on October 22 is unlikely to cause any significant damage to Mac sales, according to Wall Street analyst Brian Marshall of Broadpoint AmTech. Marshall came to this conclusion by analysing the impact of previous Windows launches on Mac sales. In his study, he compared the sales trends of Macintosh computers around the times of the launches of Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. In every case, except for the launch of Windows 2000, Marshall found that Mac sales either remained stable or in fact increased. Upon the launch of Windows Vista, Mac sales increased by a higher percentage than after any other Windows launch to date.

Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days

Official Way to Install and Use Windows Vista without Activation for Free for 120 Days

By default, Windows Vista can be installed, used and run without any license, product key or the need of activation for 30 days grace period, for purpose of trial or evaluation. Although Microsoft initially stressed that users should purchase a license with valid product key before the trial period expires, or else Windows Vista will lock into Reduced Functionality Mode. However, a "rearm" method has long since been discovered to be able to extend, or reset the remaining time for activation to another fresh 30 days, for up to 3 times.

Now Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months ( 3 rearms ), and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). All versions of Vista include Windows Vista Ultimate allow a 30-day free period without activation, except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial.
