TopDesk - Vista Program Switching in XP

TopDesk - Vista Program Switching in XP

JK points out that the venerable application switcher TopDesk has added a mode that allows you to flip through open windows in much the same way that Windows Vista's new Windows-Tab key combination offers. It's definitely very cool to look at, and Otaku Software has done a good job of making the application very fast, considering XP is not geared in a native way to provide a 3D view of open windows. The classic TopDesk views are also worth a look, providing Expose-style overviews of all open windows.

Offline Files in Vista

One of the key things that we focused on for Windows Vista was improving the experience for mobile (laptop) users. If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time running around with a laptop. However, when I am in my office, I tend to use my desktop. The primary way that I share files between my desktop and my laptop is by storing them on a Windows Server (it's also the primary way that I make sure that my files get backed up).

Gmail Goes Offline with Google Gears

Today Gmail Labs released a new feature that bridges the gap between desktop and web-based applications like never before: Offline Gmail. You can now access your Gmail from your browser any time, whether or not you're online.

Offline Gmail uses Google Gears to download all of your email to your desktop (every last gigabyte). Using Gmail in offline mode is exactly the same as using it normallyexcept that when offline mode is enabled in your browser, Gmail is that much faster.

Zoho Writer Gets Offline Editing

Zoho Writer made its tools available offline through Google Gears a few months back, but the offline capabilities were limited to read-only functions. Now both view and edit options are available for Zoho Offline, through Google Gears. So youll need to first download Google Gears if you dont already have it. From there, youll be able to access your documents offline.

Theres a new option in your Zoho Writer toolbar that lets you choose śofflineť mode. Once clicked, Zoho will download the 15 documents based on your left-hand document order for you to work with offline. If you need more, you can select to have up to 25 documents downloaded for offline use. This may be suitable for most users, but for those that use Zoho Writer in a more extensive manner, this may not be enough access for offline use. I frequently search through previous documents for fact-checking and other reasons, and would need access to more than 25 documents. But with some creative finagling, most users should be able to work around these limitations.

Whitehouse email offline

Late yesterday it was reported that the email system for the White House was offline and there was no estimated time until it would be back up. "Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the technical snafu at his 1:30 p.m. briefing, apologizing to the media for the e-mail silence this afternoon." It appears that it was a server overload as the new administration was migrating their transition email over to the official White House email servers. The outage affects both incoming and outgoing emails. The server being knocked offline is probably not a coincidence after the Obama staff complained that the technology was archaic.

Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0 helps organizations maintain virtual machines that are stored offline in a Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager library. While stored, virtual machines do not receive operating system updates. The tool provides a way to keep offline virtual machines up-to-date so that bringing a virtual machine online does not introduce vulnerabilities into the organizations IT infrastructure.

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool combines the Windows Workflow programming model with the Windows PowerShell™ interface to bring groups of virtual machines online just long enough for them to receive updates from either System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or Windows Server Update Services. As soon as the virtual machines are up-to-date, the tool returns them to the offline state in the Virtual Machine Manager library.

Update Vista and Office offline

For the first time, version 4.0 of the heise Security Offline
Update
script archive supports updates for Windows
Vista and Office. Offline Update provides a simple mechanism for users to install security updates from a CD, DVD or USB stick.

Once the generator script is launched, all the user needs to do is
select the Microsoft product and the language version of the Microsoft
script they would like to download. As soon as all the patches are
downloaded onto the disk, the script packs them into burn-ready ISO
images for CDs or DVDs. The user can then launch an installation script
from the media that quickly installs the updates on the target PC.

Offline Update is supported by a lively discussion forum. It is currently the only solution available that provides owners of Windows PCs on a slow internet connection with the latest updates. Until recently, many users were able to download "update packs" that bundled the Microsoft updates in installation packets from a website operating under the name of Autopatcher, but the download site was taken down after Microsoft issued a warning to the project developers. The zip archive provided by Offline Update, however, does not contain any Microsoft code.

Google Gears Lets Developers Take Apps Offline

Tomorrow, at the Google Developer Day conference, Google will be outlining their their developer strategy. But the big announcement will be http://gears.google.com/>Googl e Gears, an open source browser plugin that will enable developers to create offline web applications using JavaScript APIs. As a developer, youll be able to make an application with the assurance that it will work offline across browsers.

The plugin is a 700K download for Firefox 1.5+ and Internet Explorer 6.0+ that installs three developer APIs. One API will handle the creation of data objects to store application information locally, another will be a SQL lite style database for searching the data, and the final part will enable asynchronous JavaScript so that applications can sync data without overburdening the browser. More info on the APIs are available at the http://gears.google.com/>Gears website.

The first demo of Gears will be for Google Reader, which will add a green download button to the user interface. When you click the button, Reader will download the last 2,000 messages to your computer, preparing your computer to work offline or under a spotty internet connection. While offline you can read these articles and carry out your usual sharing and tagging. When you get back online, just click the button and Reader will sync your offline activity with their server...
