Microsoft applauded shipping in excess of 60 million Windows Vista licenses in the operating system's first six months of general availability. However, the Redmond company is right on track to correct this little slip up.

15.12.2007Windows Vista Ultimate explained
Windows Vista comes in several
different incarnations. But
essentially there are two
pathways -- the home user and
the business user. However,
at the very top of the pile is
the Windows Vista SCU that
gives you everything that is
in both the top of the lines
business editions and home
editions -- Windows Vista
Ultimate.
The main
attraction of Windows Vista
Ultimate is that users get all
the professional features of
Windows Vista Business like
domain logon, full backup,
full Remote Desktop support,
and so forth as well as the
full feature set of Windows
Vista Home Premium such as
Media Center, XBox 360
integration, etc.
But Microsoft sweetens the
deal for Windows Vista
Ultimate users in the form of
Windows Vista Ultimate Extras.
Ultimate Extras is an on-going
series of downloadable content
that allows Microsoft to
deliver some outstanding new
features to Ultimate users
even after release.
This week at CES, Microsoft
unveiled the first set of
Ultimate Extras including
Windows
DreamScene, a game, bit
locker support, a photo
manipulation application, and
multi-language on a single PC
support.

10.01.2007Principled Technologies Tests Windows Vista SP1
Nick White: When Windows Vista was originally released just over a year ago Microsoft commissioned Principled Technologies to compare the overall
responsiveness of Windows Vista to Windows XP SP 2 for some common business and home tasks. With the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Principled has updated their results.
Principled Technologies concluded the following when comparing business scenarios:
- Overall, Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP
performed comparably on most test operations. Performance differences between the two operating systems were typically less than a half second.
Significant differences of over a second occurred on only nine of 128 measures; Windows Vista SP1 led on eight of those.
- Windows Vista
SP1 was noticeably more responsive after rebooting than Windows XP on several common business operations.
- Overall, Windows Vista SP1 was
more responsive than Windows Vista on most comparisons. Performance differences between the two operating systems were typically less than a quarter
second.
Principled Technologies also concluded the following when comparing home scenarios...
winbeta.org -
27.02.2008Windows Vista SP1 vs. Windows Vista RTM vs. Windows XP SP2
Principled Technologies has released two Microsoft commissioned reports on Windows Vista SP1 performance. In these tests, Principled Technologies
measured responsiveness of Windows Vista SP1 vs. Windows Vista RTM vs. Windows XP SP2 when performing a set of common business and home tasks. The
results show that SP1 performs on par with Vista RTM and Windows XP.
The test show that as with Windows Vista RTM, overall performance is
on par with Windows XP. It’s important to remember that Windows Vista is a more advanced operating system, which includes many more capabilities
than Windows XP. By default, Windows Vista includes antispyware, a search indexer, and the shadow copy service. All these work in the background,
providing important services to customers, but they of course take up a portion of the PCs memory and processor resource.
On several common
business and home operations Windows Vista SP1 was noticeably more responsive after rebooting than Windows XP.

The official launch of Windows
Vista is planned for January
30. Some online retailers
have, however, made the
operating system available
early. mwave.com states that
it has Vista 32-bit Home Basic
OEM for $89.90, Vista
32-bit Home Basic OEM 3-pack
for $268.90 and Vista
32-bit Business OEM for
$139.90, all in stock and
ready to ship. Vista Home
Premium and Vista Ultimate are
currently unavailable.
Customers are limited to two
copies of Vista Home Basic OEM

must be purchased with

reasons. You can probably get

still saving a lot over the
retail price of Vista.

22.01.2007Microsoft Partners: Vista Campaign Was Deceptive
Microsoft may soon be
defending itself from a class action lawsuit over its
'Vista Capable' marketing campaign, and several of the vendor's channel partners aren't the least bit surprised.
Microsoft
launched the Vista Capable campaign in order to keep PC sales strong after its decision to delay the release of Vista to consumers until after the
2006 holiday season. Consumers who bought a PC with the 'Vista Capable' sticker would get an XP machine and then later be eligible for a free or
discounted upgrade to Vista.
What the campaign didn't specify was which of the four versions of Vista -- Home Basic, Home
Premium, Business, or Ultimate -- a PC was capable of running. And according to solution providers, therein lies the rub.

14.02.2008Microsoft Readies 50% Price Cut for Windows Vista ... in China
Microsoft is cooking healthy
price cuts for its latest
operating system, Windows
Vista. The price tag for the
Home Edition of Vista will be
cut in half. But the
additional editions of the
platform will not be
overlooked by the discounts.
While the piece of news was
not confirmed directly by
Microsoft it apparently came
from 8844.com, a Beijing
Federal Software online
software distributor,
according to
Interfax
. The only catch to the Vista
price drop is that it will be
valid only for China. And
while Vista Home Basic will be
sold at half the price, the
remaining editions of the
operating system will
apparently receive 10% off.
"Microsoft
is going to announce the price
drop this afternoon,"
revealed Zan Xiaoqin, a
representative of 8844.com.
"The home edition of Vista
will now sell at RMB 499
($66), about half the previous
price. Meanwhile, the prices
of the business and ultimate
editions will also drop about
10 percent."
Microsoft's move comes on
the heels of the largest
takedown of a software
counterfeiting syndicate
located in the southern
Chinese province of Guangdong.
Backing efforts from the FBI
and Chinas Public Security
Bureau, Microsoft applauded
the shutdown of a global
bootlegged software
manufacturing and distributing
business worth an estimated $2
billion. And while sales of
pirated copies of Windows
Vista are increasing,
legitimate licenses of the
operating system in China are
gathering dust on store
shelves...

05.01.2008Microsoft sabotaging desktop virtualisation
Microsoft's last minute
decision last week not to ease
virtualisation restrictions
for Windows Vista are designed
to "delay market adoption of
competitive virtualisation
software" and are
"unjustified", analyst firm
Gartner charged in a news
analysis.
The
software vendor last week was
planning to change the
licensing terms for Windows
Vista Home Basic and Windows
Vista Home Premium, allowing
users to run the software in a
virtual compartment. The
changes would also further
ease virtualisation
restrictions for Vista
Ultimate and Vista Business,
which currently lack support
for the Bitlocker data
encryption technology and have
restrictions on digital rights
management (DRM).
Microsoft however pulled
the planned changes at the
last minute and without
explanation.
Gartner
alleges that Microsoft is
delaying the licensing changes
because it wants to slow down
the desktop virtualisation
market. The firm currently
lacks a competitive
virtualisation product and
isn't expected to catch up
until 2009. ..

26.06.2007Vista Licenses Limit OS Transfers, Ban VM Use
"TechWeb has posted an
article regarding Vista's new
license and how it allows you
to only move it to another
device once. How will this
work for people who build
their PCs? I have no intention
of purchasing a new license
every time I swap out
motherboards. 'The first user
of the software may reassign
the license to another device
one time.
If you
reassign the license, that
other device becomes the
"licensed device," reads the
license for Windows Vista Home
Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate,
and Business. In other words,
once a retail copy of Vista is
installed on a PC, it can be
moved to another system only
once. ...
Elsewhere in the license,
Microsoft forbids users from
installing Vista Home Basic
and Vista Home Premium in a
virtual machine. "You may not
use the software installed on
the licensed device within a
virtual (or otherwise
emulated) hardware system,"
the legal language reads.
Vista Ultimate and Vista
Business, however, can be
installed within a VM.'"
Overly Critical Guy points out
more information about changes
to Vista's EULA and the new
usage restrictions. "For
instance, Home Basic users
can't copy ISOs to their hard
drives, can't run in a
virtualized environment, and
can only share files and
printers to a maximum of 5
network devices."
