great market success. The "Domain Helper" is aimed at assisting users who have mistyped website addresses by redirecting them to an "easy-to-use
page with suggestions and links." That's how Comcast have described their latest service anyway. But what Comcast describe as a "Domain
Helper" has been referred to as DNS hijacking by others. Like many ISPs, Comcast now redirects their customers to a search page, but what they
didn't mention in their blog post were the adverts that are on the page too, leading some customers to be less than happy with the new service.

02.09.2008Symantec: Attackers exploiting new RealPlayer flaw
Symantec is warning users of the RealPlayer media software to be extra careful while surfing the Web.
On Wednesday, the
company's Symantec Security Response team uncovered new attack code that affects the RealPlayer 11 beta and RealPlayer 10.5 software on the Windows
platform, according to Ben Greenbaum, a senior manager with the group. By late Wednesday, Symantec had tested the attack and confirmed that it worked
on the English version of Windows XP Service Pack 1 running Internet Explorer 6. Tests for the more-recent XP service pack 2 and IE 7 browser were
ongoing.
For the attack to work, the criminal would have to trick the victim into playing a maliciously encoded Web page. The
flaw lies in a browser helper object, software that RealPlayer uses to help users who are experiencing technical difficulties.

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs
claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself
are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of
running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running
Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

11.12.2007Neowin at Digital Life 2007: Microsoft's Booth
Microsoft took a three pronged approach to their booth this year. They decided to focus on Vista (again), Games for Windows, and Windows Mobile.
Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 and Halo 3 were not highlighted in the least bit.
It actually surprised me to see Microsoft pushing Vista so
hard, still. Compared to last year, before Vista was released, this year's Vista display was even larger and more in your face. There were more
kiosks, sofas, and lots of Vista logos on anything that could bare one. We know about Vista, though, so let's move on.

Even after the release of Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft won't be quick to ditch Vista according to Computer World. Microsoft plans to
continue selling Vista until January 2011. However, they will drop support for Vista in less than 3 years. This seems to go against an earlier hint
by a Microsoft General Manager that the company would get rid of Vista as soon as Windows 7 was released. However, Microsoft not ditching Vista as
soon as Windows 7 is released shouldn't come as a surprise. It's a company policy to keep an OS in distribution for 4 years after its debut.

second phase
of Operation Bot Roast, an ongoing investigation into botnets, and the criminal activity associated with them. I recently asked Dr. Jose Nazario
of Arbor Networks where in the world the bot herders, the people who control the botnets, might be. Here are some excerpts:
We
see a few major groups. We see Americans and Western Europeans often interested in using the botnet to make money either directly or indirectly by
selling services, or stealing information from those botnets to sell and use credit card information bank information, etc.
There are some botnets out of South America, but mostly South America seems dominated by the Brazilian, what folks used to call the banker Trojan, the
browser helper object that steals information right out of the browser from banks from online banking or e-commerce transactions. Some of the more
high-profile botnets we've dubbed TeamUSA and Peruvian Power. These have been long running and relatively successful. But they're not exactly
household names.
