Using Windows Vistas Complete PC Backup - A Guide

A week ago, my hard drive started making an odd clicking noise, and, after a call to Dell support, it was clear the damn thing was going to die on me, fast. Dell sent me a new drive, free under my warranty, lickety-split, and last night my job was to move everything over to the new hard drive.

Since I run Windows Vista Ultimate, I can use the very nice Complete PC Backup feature to move my files over to the new hard drive, and I did. Overall, it worked out nicely. You can also use this feature if you bought a new bigger hard drive and want to move everything over to it.

Heres how it goes...

Hitachi GST announces first 7,200RPM 2TB hard drive

Its fun to think that ten years ago the biggest hard drive available was 73 gigabytes. However with the constant and near unstoppable push to solid state drives, hard disk manufacturers must continue to press on. Fast forward to today and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies becomes just the first vendor to announce a 2TB 7,200RPM desktop hard drive. Hitachi is not the first hard drive manufacturer to reach 2TB, Western Digital did that earlier this year, but the first 2TB drives were limited to a read/write of 5,400RPM. Seagate hit 5,900 RPM earlier this year as well, but again these new drives will have a distinct speed advantage.

The Hard Drive Factor

While often overlooked, the hard drive plays an important role in the system's overall capacity and performance which can be vital in ensuring a smooth-running, glitch-free experience. If data bogs down at the hard drive, you won't have a chance in Zanzibar to experience the full power of your system, no matter how much processing power you're packing.

Hard drives can differ in capacity and performance. Over the last several years, advancements in technology have pushed the envelope in these two these areas and an understanding of each will help you chose the best hard drive for your needs.

Seagate Barracuda hard drives plagued by failures

Numerous complaints are being reported from customers who own the 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive at the Seagate's online support forum. The hard drive seems to just freeze during data transfers. Kabatek, Brown and Kellner LLP, a consumer law firm, is considering a lawsuit against Seagate because of the high failure rates of the Barracuda 7100.11. Seagate, the world's largest Hard drive maker released the 3.5-inch internal drive, Barracuda 7200.11 in July 2008. The hard drive offers 1.5TB of capacity on four platters and uses a SATA 3GB/sec interface, delivering a sustained data rate of up to 120MB/sec.

Hitachi to form hard drive company with Toshiba, Fujitsu?

Japanese conglomerate, Hitachi, may be in talks with Toshiba and Fujitsu on forming a new company dedicated to hard drives and storage systems. The new company would combine the limping hard drive divisions of Hitachi and Toshiba as well as some of the storage systems technology from Fujitsu. Each would own a third. The three-way deal is being proposed as an alternative to a private equity buyout. Hitachi has been in discussions with equity firm Silver Lake and others about spinning off its money-losing hard drive group, according to sources and news reports. Those talks, however, have not gone smoothly, sources familiar with the discussions said.

Seagate Launches First 1.5TB Desktop Drive

There seems to be no limit in sight as to raw capacity on disk drives, although science would seem to indicate otherwise.

Only about a year after introducing 1 terabyte desktop drives, Seagate Technologies on July 10 unveiled the industry's first 1.5TB desktop drive along with a 500-megabyte (half-terabyte) notebook hard drive.

The debut of the Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB hard drive, the 11th generation of Seagate's flagship drive for desktop PCs, marks the single largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives -- a half-terabyte increase from the previous highest capacity of 1TB, thanks to the capacity-boosting power of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology.

Seagate release their first 2TB SATA 3.0 hard disk

Seagate have introduced their first hard drive which supports the new SATA 3.0 specification. The Barracuda XT is the Seagate's first drive to use the new interface, which has a theoretical bandwidth of 6GB/s - double that of the SATA 2.0 (3GB/s) specification. The drive offers 2TB of storage space, using four platters, according to Seagate (via Techspot). The 7200RPM drive has a sustained data rate of 138MB/s – the fastest speed achieved by a 7200RPM drive, Seagate claims. The 64MB cache provides "screaming burst rate speeds and improve overall performance," according to their website.

Microsoft readies hard drive only Xbox 360 games

Microsoft announced yesterday that it would soon allow MMO developers to require hard drive space when playing games on Xbox 360 despite the console maker's previous denial of such claims.

"Feel free to require 30GB for your game - that's just going to make your potential audience a lot smaller," a Microsoft representative told a group of developers while speaking at GameFest in Seattle this week.

Effective immediately, Microsoft will not restrict the amount of hard drive space MMO game developers can use. It is unclear if non-MMO games will be allowed to require hard drives when playing future games on 360.

An estimated 20% of 360 owners don't own a hard drive, which is optional for those only wanting to purchase the Core model...

Seagate shows off 6Gbps SATA3 hard drive transfer speed

Partnering up with AMD, on Monday Seagate announced the latest Serial ATA specification: SATA3. The new specification offers hard drive transfer speeds of up to 6Gbps, which is around 600MBps. This new specification was developed by the Serial ATA International Organization, in order to provide a hefty upgrade from today's SATA2 specification. So just how much of an upgrade is it? Your average SATA2 drive today can offer hard drive transfer speeds of up to 3Gbps, which is roughly 300MBps, so in theory SATA3 will be twice as fast. As CNET notes, it's important to know that software and hardware holds back these speeds, so in reality they're about 100MBps less than they could be.
