Kaspersky: Vista Firewall Not Enough Alone

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, has released a new analytical article on using leak tests to evaluate firewall effectiveness by Nikolay Grebennikov, deputy director of the Department of Innovative Technologies. According to Grebennikov, due to the increase in the number of malicious programs, the additional security provided by a firewall is increasingly pertinent since firewalls block undesirable network traffic. He states that even the latest operating systems, such as Windows Vista, cannot block all types of leaks on their own (although, from Windows XP SP2 onwards, Windows has included a firewall. Firewall functionality was significantly expanded in Windows Vista).

Enable Vistas two-way firewall with Vista Firewall Control

Microsoft ships Vista with a better firewall than previous versions of Vista but its configuration isnt so great right out of the box and unless you want to set up rules manually, yourself, its just better to run a third party firewall. But that can pose entirely new problems.

It seems that many third party solutions dont play nice with Vista in one or more ways. Some can prevent Vista from retrieving updates, others can freeze the operating system seemingly at random and others just plain dont work at all.

That leaves running the Vista firewall itself. Running the firewall thats built in to the operating system is not something I usually recommend unless you have Mac OSX or Linux which arent very prone to any kind of attack.

Tracing the memory leak: Is it Firefox 3?

Yesterday, we mentioned that we've been noticing recent versions of Firefox, including 3.0.5, have exhibited the memory leak problems that used to plague Firefox 2. We are noticing this on both Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1.

We'd also noticed that systems where the add-on Tab Mix Plus was installed, did not appear to exhibit the same memory leak. Today, we uninstalled Tab Mix Plus (reluctantly, because we like it) from one system. On that system, the memory use pattern has changed, perhaps moderated, though we're not sure the leak has gone away. It now appears to be slower than in our tests yesterday, and from time to time, something in Firefox does clean up parts of memory from time to time. In one test, we had two Firefox windows open with seven tabs open in one of them, a dozen in the other -- a pretty full slate. Task Manager is showing us that Firefox grabs memory in one-megabyte chunks per second, for about a minute at a time, and then leveling back out to about 300,000 KB.

So if it's not a leak right now, at least it's a fight, and we'll let you know what else we find...

What's new in the Windows 7 Firewall?

Since the introduction of the first firewall built into the operating system (Internet Connection Firewall) of Windows XP, Microsoft has steadily improved the firewall in each subsequent incarnation of Windows. While the Windows Firewall included in the newest client OS, Windows 7 is more evolutionary than revolutionary, it does provide some nice tweaks to make it more user-friendly and at least one big change that makes a difference to mobile users. In this article, we will take a look at the Windows Firewall in Windows 7 and show you how to configure it with multiple active firewall policies.

Windows Live OneCare 1.6 released

After the discussion last week that Windows Live OneCare 1.6 had been released, it is now available to all users from http://onecare.live.com/>oneca re.live.com. Users already running OneCare will be upgraded over the next few weeks, however you may prefer not to wait.

OneCare also improved its performance in the virus scan test which saw it placed last back in February, showing that as promised, the team is putting more work into the OneCare detection. What's New With Windows Firewall?

The Windows Firewall was first introduced with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), and was later added to Windows Server 2003 as part of Service Pack 1 (SP1). The Windows Firewall was a big improvement over its predecessor, which had no built-in, host-based firewall at all. This initial release was very basic and included only the most fundamental functionality. With the advent of Vista and Windows Server 2008, the Windows Firewall has been given a substantial makeover and is now known as Windows Firewall with Advanced Security (WFAS). Keep reading for a description of the new features in WFAS as well as a step-by-step configuration example.

Here is a list of some of the most important new features in WFAS...

Trend Micro OS Protection beta released

Trend Micro today released http://www.trendsecure.com/por tal/en-US/threat_analytics/os_ protect.php?WT.cg_n=home_2nd_r ight>Trend Micro OS Protection beta for its Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 customers. OS protection includes Trend Micro Firewall Booster and Trend Micro Pre-Startup Scan.

Rather than rail against various kernel changes within Windows Vista as Symantec and other did last fall, Trend Micro says it wanted to work in cooperation with Microsoft. Trend Micro OS Protection works on both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.

The chief benefit from Trend Micro Firewall Booster is Windows Vista users won't have dual firewall technologies running. Firewall Booster leverages existing Windows Vista Firewall capabilities, adding protection provided by Trend Micro. Trend Micro Pre-Startup Scan runs before Windows Vista boots, ferreting out sleeping malware such as rootkits before engaging the operating system. Pre-Startup includes a system restore checkpoint, so that a user can always roll back any changes made. The process is not automatic, allowing the user to decide when and how the scans will be done. ..

Microsoft: we let you down with XP

"We let you down with Windows XP". So stated Steve Riley, in an afternoon session today at Tech.Ed Australia, entitled "Making the Tradeoff: Be Secure or Get Work Done".

He was referring to that oft-maligned piece of client software, Windows Firewall “ "We gave you a firewall, and then we turned it off," he said sheepishly.

Its not often that a Microsoft spokesperson will openly state what the rest of us have always known, but then Steve isnt known for dodging awkward topics .

Having said that, its relatively safe to make that statement so late in the piece, now that anyone with a Windows XP machine disables the firewall as an essential first step and then installs some freeware which does the job admirably, or just uses Windows Vista, which contains the firewall capabilities that Windows XP should have had.

"We let you down"? We know!
