27.05.2008Windows Vista Grace Period Extended to 120 Days
Every Vista DVD includes the
ability to install any edition
of Vista without a product
key. When you install without
a product key, you get an
automatic 30 day evaluation
period. This probably isn't
news to anyone.
What may be news
to you, however, is that you
can easily extend the 30-day
Windows Vista grace period to
120 days. No hacks required.
This is an official, supported
operation directly from
Microsoft.
To extend the grace period
another 30 days, simply start
a command prompt as
Administrator, and issue this
command:
slmgr -rearm
Reboot for the
change to take effect, and
voila, you have 30 more days.
You can only extend three
times, so the total grace
period for a Vista evaluation
is 120 days.

28.03.2007Microsoft Inadvertently Ships Deleted Files
Microsofts use of virtual machines to distribute evaluation versions of software saves the end user much of the pain of having to configure test
systems. However, it also introduces a new quality control issue by exposing the full dimension of data that was on the system when the virtual
machines disk image was created, and last month, that issue caught Microsoft off guard.
The company began making disk images, or
Virtual Hard Drives (VHDs), with evaluation versions available on a limited basis in 2005 and more generally accessible through Microsoft TechNet in
November 2006, and had provided a way for partners to build their own prepackaged software stacks, using the Virtual PC technology it acquired from
the now-defunct Connectix in 2003.
SD Times in December learned that at least one of the machine images available for download at
TechNet did not have its free space wiped, and files thought deleted proved recoverable from an evaluation copy of the Internet Explorer Application
Compatibility VPC Image.

Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 - Part Deux
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Following the benchmarks I carried out last week, I
decided that the PC Doc HQ lab rats needed to pull a few all-nighters and carry out some more benchmarking tests on Vista SP1 and XP SP2. Is it
possible to determine conclusively which is the faster, more responsive OS?
One of the main criticisms of my initial benchmark
tests was that I overlooked the fact that, under the hood, Windows Vista SP1 works differently to XP SP2 in the file copy department. The difference
is down to caching and how Vista carried out uncached I/O while XP caches the files. On top of that is the further complication that the file
transfer progress bars are coded to work differently. Vistas file copy dialog box goes away when the cache is committed, while under XP the copy
dialog goes away while the committal is still pending. In other words XP is coded to appear fast...

Is Microsoft Cracking Down on DVD Ripping?
Tom Spring: Is Microsoft trying to thwart DVD-ripping on PCs using Windows Vista with the new beta of Vista Service Pack 1?
As I
tested the public beta release of Vista SP1, I noticed the
update crippled a popular DVD cracking program called DVD43.
DVD43 is a free utility that disables a DVD's Content Scramble System (CSS) copy protection technology. Once a
DVD's copy protection is disabled, you can copy its content using one of several third-party programs. You may be using DVD43 and not realize it,
because it often is the engine of other ripping programs.
When I updated my Windows Vista operating system with the beta of Vista
SP1, DVD43 wouldn't load. Instead, I saw an error message about a missing driver--even after I uninstalled and then reinstalled DVD43. A colleague of
mine had a similar experience on a PC that also had been updated with the latest beta release of Vista SP1.
