Remaining Ultimate Extra Language Packs Released

We are pleased to announce the release of the remaining 19 languages packs for Windows Vista Ultimate. This Ultimate Extras release brings the total number of language packs for use with Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) to 35. Windows Vista Ultimate enables users install multiple languages on their system and quickly switch between them by associating a system language with their login name.

MUI is particularly useful in multilingual homes where multiple people use a single computer and choose different languages for their primary use. People who wish to learn a new language will also find MUI to be a particularly useful feature. We are aware of a very large number of customers who have purchased Ultimate for this feature specifically and are gratified that these customers can now realize the full benefit of Windows Vista Ultimate.

The languages we are adding today are as follows...

Web 2.0 is the millionth English word, word 999,998 is n00b

It seems like the world should have passed this mark a long time ago but as of June 10th 2009, "Web 2.0", became the official 1 millionth word to enter the English language. It is defined as "he next generation of web products and services, coming soon to a browser near you". Other words that almost made the claim as the one millionth word were 999,999, "Jai Ho!", which was made popular from the movie Slum Dog millionaire. Also another notable word that is infamous in the gaming world, n00b, is officially word number 999,998. It's also the only mainstream English word that contains two numerals.

Announcing (English only) support for Vista CPP participants

Nick White of Microsoft writes on the Windows Vista Team Blog: We're pleased to announce the addition of best-effort phone support (in English only) to North America CPP participants of the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) using English-language versions of early test builds of Windows Vista (Beta 2, RC1 or RC2).

This is another step in our process of ramping up preparations for the 30th January general availability of Windows Vista. We'll of course begin offering product phone support to the general public on the first day of Windows Vista's availability.

For all CPP participants, the newsgroups remain the most valuable channel for finding helpful information on general issues related to Windows Vista.

Volume License customers looking for Windows Vista Enterprise- or Professional-level support today should visit the
Microsoft Windows Vista Solutions Center and the Windows Vista Help & Support page.

Windows Vista Build 5728 Availability Window Closing Soon

Nick White has posted this on the Vista team blog yesterday, thought I'd give everyone who is interested in testing the latest build of Vista a heads up on the limited availability.

Per my post from last week, I've got some news for you regarding the release of interim build 5728:

If you've not yet downloaded the build, I would suggest doing so today.

Vista SP1 x86 appears on Torrent Sites

In the last few days, certain Neowin forum members have reported that an image of Vista SP1 x86 Final has leaked to torrent sites. This file is supposedly a slipstreamed image of the final Service Pack 1 for Vista x86. It is allegedly available in various languages, including English. Since many believe that this is indeed the download that Microsoft will provide in the upcoming weeks, I would like to emphasize that this is not the case. This release is not official, nor is it genuine. I repeat: Vista SP1 has not gone final.

Neowin members are reporting that the file in question may be SP1 Refresh 2 slipstreamed or simply a malware-filled release. I would like to remind our members not to post links to any Vista SP1 build, unless it comes directly from Microsoft’s servers.

BenQ to change English name to 'Qisda'

While BenQ just announced it will change its Chinese name from "Jia Da" to "Jias Da" (transliterated from Chinese) last week, the company recently stated the official English name for the new company will be Qisda, which stands for "quality innovation speed driving and achievements."

The new names (Chinese and English) will be effective on September 1, 2007, said the company. With a spin-off project, Qisda is expected to turn profitable in 2008, said KY (Kuen-Yao) Lee, chairman of BenQ.

Qisda will mainly focus on LCD monitors, projectors, MFPs (multi-function peripherals) and handset ODM/OEM businesses. The LCD monitor segment will be the sales driver initially and account for 30-40% of the company's revenues, Lee noted. Lee stressed that Qisda will not compete for notebook OEM/ODM orders. ..

Announcing the RTM of Windows Vista SP1

Mike Nash, Windows Product Management Group: Today we are excited to announce that we have released Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista to manufacturing (RTM) for our first set of languages (English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese).

Service Pack 1 is a very important milestone because it addresses many of the key issues that our customers have identified with Windows Vista over the last year both, directly and through programs like the Customer Experience Improvement Program. With Service Pack 1, we have made great progress in performance, reliability and compatibility. One of the great things about my job is that I get to play with the latest builds of our products -- I've personally been running Windows Vista SP1 pretty exclusively for a few months and I've noticed that my systems run faster and more reliably than they did with the "Gold" release of Windows Vista.

First Preview of CRM 4 by Stunware.com

Michael introduces the world to Microsoft Dynamics 4.0 aka Titan in his A first preview of Microsoft Dynamics CRM "Titan".

There you can read a lot more about the three major improvements in this new release:
  • Multi-Tenancy: A CRM server now can host multiple organizations. This is extremely important for service providers, as they had to run a server for each CRM organization so far. Microsoft itself is going to provide a hosted CRM solution with CRM Live, but many partners will pop up in the near future offering the same to you. It is a good alternative to an on-premise installation when you're a small company or your employees are spread around the world and you want to easily connect them without building your own infrastructure with 24/7 support.
  • Multi-Language: You can now install MUI packs on your CRM server and clients to support additional languages. Being limited to a single language in the past, a user now can select from a list of available languages and pick his favorite one. The installation of a MUI package is a no-brainer and additional languages are set up in about 5 minutes.
  • Multi-Currency: All currency fields now store the value in the system's base currency and optionally a foreign currency including the exchange rate. Exchange rates have to be configured at the server. There's no historical list of exchange rates kept, so I'm pretty sure to see add-ons soon. Anyway it's a big improvement compared to 3.0, where we have been limited to a single currency.

Microsoft Backpedals, Moves Up Vista SP1 Release Dates

After getting an earful from IT professionals on the delayed release of Vista SP1, Microsoft said Monday it would make the software available this month to some customers.

Volume-licensing customers will get the English version of the software at the end of this week, Mike Nash, corporate vice president for Windows product management, announced on the Vista Team blog. Nash said other languages would follow but did not give a time frame.

Later this month, the service pack will be made available to MSDN and TechNet Plus subscribers, many of whom lashed out at Microsoft on its TechNet Plus blog with venomous comments. Nash did not provide an exact date. Customers who participated in the Vista SP1 beta were shipped the SP1 bits last Friday.

Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light

Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista experience a tiny bit.

Real Desktop comes it two forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and with Light, not so much.

The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to mess them up.
