Vista SP1 Beta 1 to launch in mid-July, sources say

It's official: We are now in the under-promise and over-deliver era at Microsoft.

Just when Microsoft had customers, partners and competitors all believing that it was going to delay the first service pack for Vista not releasing a first beta of it until just before year-end the company is set to deliver Beta 1 of Vista SP1 in mid-July.

Word (from various sources who asked not to be named) is Microsoft is gearing up to drop Vista SP1 some time the week of July 16. And despite what Microsoft seemingly led Google, the U.S. Department of Justice and other company watchers to believe, the final version of Vista SP1 is sounding like November 2007.

Microsoft is expected to emphasize that SP1 is more about fixes than new features. Most of the elements of SP1 are expected to enhance or supplment features that are already part of Vista, sources said.

In addition to desktop-search modifications, heres a list of other fixes likely to make it in:

7 Whole-Disk Encryption Apps Put A Lock On Data

Few IT professionals need to be lectured about data security. All too frequently we hear of the theft or loss of a computer or hard drive with data stored in the clear -- without encryption.

Fortunately, on-the-fly data encryption is no longer some exotic, costly beast. Rather than just encrypting single files, some applications are able to create virtual disks, either within a file or directly on a partition, where everything written to the disk is automatically encrypted. On modern hardware, the overhead for encryption is minimal; you no longer need dedicated hardware to make this happen.

Vista encryption 'no threat' to computer forensics

Security advances in Windows Vista are unlikely to frustrate cybercrime investigation, according to a leading computer forensics firm. Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Vista include a feature that provides data volume encryption called BitLocker Drive Encryption. Suggestions that BitLocker contains a backdoor allowing law enforcement agencies automatic access to encrypted volumes have been robustly denied by Microsoft.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the availability of Vista will mean the widespread adoption of disc encryption technologies that will frustrate law enforcement investigations in computer crime, including trafficking in images of child abuse, computer hacking, industrial espionage and other offences. For one thing, in two of its three modes of operation BitLocker requires a cryptographic hardware chip called a Trusted Platform Module and a compatible BIOS. These chips are yet to become widely available much less deployed. The third mode requires a user to insert a USB device that contains a startup key in order to boot the protected OS.

Web browsers get a 12% speed boost in Windows 7 over Vista

If you've been testing the final Windows 7 Release Candidate on your own physical platforms, and you wonder what's giving you that feeling that it's just a bit peppier, a tad zippier, it's not an illusion. Betanews tests all this week, concluding today, comparing all the major stable release and development Windows-based Web browsers, running on exactly the same physical computer with fresh Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 RC partitions, confirmed what our eyes and gut feelings were telling us: On average, most browsers ran 11.9% faster in Windows 7 than on the same machine running Vista SP2, with most speed gains falling right around that mark.

DRam crack breaks encryption software

Disk encryption software used on many systems can be circumvented using what researchers referred to as "simple non-destructive techniques".

A report from researchers at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Princeton University and Wind River Systems concluded that many current consumer disk encryption programs can be compromised via a computer's DRam. The problem is that data can remain in stored in memory even after the system is shut down. By cold-booting the system, an attacker could access data from the DRam and retrieve encryption keys.

Full-Disk Encryption Is Partial Protection, Analysts Say

Full-disk and file-based encryption should be combined to best prevent data leaks, according to security analysts and vendors.

It seems to be in the news about once a monthanother laptop disappears containing thousands of pieces of corporate or personal data.

Now the legal department wants to know whether IT can confirm that some or all of the data was encrypted so the company can determine both its risk and what to do next.

It is in cases like these, when data is at risk, that some vendors and analysts say full-disk encryption is the ultimate assurance against data leaks.

Laptop hard drive with on-board encryption a first: Seagate

Thanks to Amano for his front page submission.

ASI Computer Technologies of Markham, Ontario, Canada will be the first to sell laptop computers using Seagate Technology LLC's computer hard drives with built-in encryption technology. The Scotts Valley, California-based company has included a chip that automatically encrypts all data written to the Momentus 5400 FDE (Full Disk Encryption) hard drive on the fly, rendering it unreadable without a digital key or password and allowing all data stored on it to be instantly erased. " I can't help but think that this kind of hard drive would become a standard issue on corporate laptops ," said Dave Reinsel, a storage industry analyst at market research firm IDC.

Seagate says its hardware-based technology has an advantage over software-based encryption (example: Microsoft's BitLocker, include in Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Vista), in part because it would make it impossible to even start a computer without proper authentication. The 2.5-inch 160 gigabyte-capacity hard drive is to include security management software by Wave Systems Corporation of Lee, Massachusetts, to help companies use the encryption technology. " The drive's hardware-based full disc encryption delivers significantly stronger protection against hacking and tampering than traditional encryption approaches by securely performing all cryptographic operations and key management within the drive ," the world's largest maker of computer hard drives said in a written statement.

Seagate announces 1TB encrypted hard drive

About a month and a half ago, Seagate officially unveiled its 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 3.5" hard drive. The drive squeezes a terabyte of capacity onto four platters that spin at 7,200RPM, all complemented by a hefty 32MB buffer. Seagate has now announced a new 1TB Barracuda hard drive, this time featuring the encryption technology it introduced with its Momentus 5400.2 FDE mobile hard drive over a year ago.

According to Seagate, the Barracuda FDE series will be the world's first 3.5" hard drive lineup to feature native AES encryption technology. In systems powered by the drive, logging on "requires a pre-boot user password that can be buttressed with other layers of authentication such as smart cards and biometrics." Barracuda FDE drives will have 7,200-RPM spindle speeds and will launch in 2008 with capacities up to 1TB.

In addition to its terabyte FDE disk, Seagate also intends to roll out new Momentus 5400.4 2.5" mobile hard drives. Those drives won't have encryption functionality, but they'll combine capacities of up to 250GB with 5,400-RPM spindle speed and 300MB/s Serial ATA interfaces.

Encryption could make you more vulnerable, warn experts

The use of data encryption could make organizations vulnerable to new risks and threats, a panel of security experts warned Monday.

Many organizations are encrypting their stored data to relieve concerns over
data theft or loss - for example, U.S. mandatory disclosure laws on data breaches
do not apply to encrypted data.

However, experts from IBM Internet
Security Systems
, Juniper,
nCipher and elsewhere
said that data encryption also brings new risks, in particular via attacks -
deliberate or accidental - on the key management infrastructure.

VIA announces PadLock RSA module for Microsoft Windows

VIA has announced the VIA PadLock RSA Module, which utilizes the strength and speed of the VIA PadLock Security Engine integrated into all VIA C7 family processors, to accelerate public key encryption such as RSA used in Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Designed to help in the fight against Internet fraud, the VIA PadLock RSA Module works by accelerating the process of public key authentication in Microsoft applications, thereby enabling users to utilize longer authentication keys, making it more difficult for computer criminals to break and so enhancing security in a wide range of Internet and network applications, such as online banking and e-commerce, says VIA. The VIA PadLock RSA Module works in PCs running Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 Professional, as well as servers with Windows Server "Longhorn", Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000 Server, the company adds.

Once installed, all Microsoft applications which use RSA as standard or the default CSP (cryptographic service provider) can utilize the VIA PadLock RSA Module to offload some of the public key encryption process to the VIA PadLock Security Engine, a hardware security engine integrated into VIA C7 processors, accelerating the process by as much as 275%, claims VIA.
