Vista Can Be Taken Down by an Animated Cursor
In what could be the most embarrassing exploit to impact Windows Vista since its commercial launch in January, security engineers at McAfee's Avert Labs confirmed today - and posted the video to prove - that the operating system can be caused to enter an interminable crash-restart-crash loop, by means of a buffer overflow triggered by nothing more than a malformed animated cursor file.

16.02.2009Windows Vista Interface Causes Problems For Consumers, Support Firm Says
Navigating Windows Vista's
Aero user interface is a big
problem for many consumers
learning Microsoft's
6-month-old operating system,
a technical support company
said Thursday.
Support.com<
/a>, which offers technical
support to consumers, said the
top three reasons people
called for Vista help were to
solve navigation problems,
device incompatibility, and
home networking issues.
While Vista is "a leap
forward in terms of usability
and functionality," it
requires consumers used to
working with older versions of
Windows to learn something
new, Anthony Rodio, chief
marketing officer for
Support.com, said in a
statement. "We know very well
that any major switch in
operating systems can
initially cause confusion and
problems for end-users," he
said. "Consumers often suffer
from frustrating issues that
prevent them from using their
computer for its intended use,
whether it's simply accessing
their e-mail system or
printing a document."..

13.07.2007Microsoft Research tackles mobile touch-screen problem
Daniel Vogel, a Ph.D.
candidate at the University of
Toronto, and Patrick Baudisch,
a scientist at Microsoft
Research, have created a
technique designed to make it
easier to select items on a
mobile-phone screen with a
finger rather than a pointed
stylus. The Microsoft Research
project, called Shift,
automatically displays a
circular image with a small
"x" on the screen above
where a user places his
finger. By toggling the tip of
his finger, a user can move
the X to place it on top of
the item he wants to choose.
Lifting the finger from the
screen selects the item.
Shift builds on an
already developed technology
known as Offset Cursor, which
displays a cursor just above
the spot a user touches on the
screen. That allows users to
place their fingers below the
items they want to choose so
that they can see the items
rather than hiding them with
their fingers. Vogel and
Baudisch said Offset Cursor
has drawbacks, particularly
for users trying to choose an
icon near the edge of the
screen. Because Offset Cursor
displays the cursor above the
finger, it can't be used to
choose icons at the bottom of
the screen. Shift only
displays the image when
necessary, so if a user
touches a large item, Shift
doesn't pop up the circular
image.

01.08.2008Early Vista SP1 64-bit installs causing new problems?
An iTWire journo by the name of Alex
has found yet another Vista
SP1 issue to bitch about, this time it's the x64 version and early reports are pointing to several problems. Anything from the "Windows
Performance Rating" vanishing, to the poor souls Treo not being recognized through "Windows Mobile Center" after SP1 installation. There could be
many explanations for this happening: Either the guys laptop is so sucky that Vista did him a favor by simply hiding crap results, and his phone may
no longer sync to Mobile center because he has so few friends and contacts it just isn't worth it.
Vista may of done the guy a
favour.
Or Vista is indeed broke, and Microsoft need to sort it. Either way I am sick of all the ranting as of late, so much so that I will
be installing Windows Vista x64 SP1 just to annoy websites like iTWire,
InfoWorld and CNet (Staff bloggers) and all of
their readers to show them that any normal user can install Vista x64 SP1 and have everything work afterwards. Meanwhile a whambulance has been
dispatched to the above mentioned sites to pick up the whiney tossers.

25.02.2008More server problems, forum downtime
Last night one of our apache
servers died, we don't know
why or what caused it and we
are still waiting for our
server admin to respond to an
email we sent.
Also
the forum started mass
doubling posts for almost
every submission, sometimes
triple posting a submission.
Again we aren't sure whats
causing that either. Marcel
has put count queries back on
the Master SQL database, which
means the load on our Master
is back to where it was last
week..
I'm not
really sure what we can do to
fix these problems, but we
have Dave and Marcel looking
into it.
The forum
is offline while Marcel does a
topic recount.. this takes
time and when thats complete
the forums will re-open. Later
today we should have the
second apache server back up..
Hopefully there will be
something in the logs that
tell us what went wrong
there.
I'd like to
apologise for our downtime.
Its very frustrating to me and
I know that our valued members
are getting annoyed at the
constant server problems. I
will be looking into getting
professional advice next week,
to see if we can resolve some
issues.
Thanks to
everyone for the continued
patience while we try to
resolve the issues.

08.10.2006How to Connect Your Email Address to Your OpenID Account
OpenID is an excellent solution for establishing a single identity for all your online accounts, but many people haven’t even tried it yet. For
some, the concept of using a URL address for a login ID instead of the traditional email address is still completely foreign.
However,
Email to ID could be what the doctor ordered and what these creatures of habits
need. It could also be what OpenID needs in order to expedite wide-spread acceptance as the single sign on identity standard. You can now link your
email address (or several of them) to your OpenID and then use that email address (any of them) to log into any online service that supports it! The
beauty rests in the simplicity of it all. Best of all, it’s all free and easy to do.

Spam email accounted for between 90 and 95 per cent of all email in 2007, up from an estimated five per cent of email in 2001, according to a report

The report, which analysed more than one billion daily email messages sent to more than
50,000 users worldwide, also tracked the increasing complexity of spam techniques over the past several years. 2007 witnessed the majority of spammers
using identity obfuscation techniques, in which spammers send email from diverse sources throughout the internet. Other spamming trends also include
the increased the use of attachments, including as PDF files and other file formats.
