Vista Update Fingers Activation Cracks

Microsoft has announced an update available to consumers next week which will detect two cracks commonly used to activate pirated copies of the operating system. One of the cracks refered to as Grace Timer, extended Vista's activation grace period, upto 2099. The other called as OEM BIOS, modified system files and the PC's BIOS to mimic the product activation done by computer-makers at the factory. If the sniffer detects an activation hack, it will pop up a warning that includes a link to the removal tool. Although SP1 will block these two cracks, " it's important to note that this update does not disable the exploits it finds, " says Alex Kochis. " It simply alerts customers that exploits exist. " However, MS will release a separate crack-removal tool at the same time that it rolls out the detection update.

Colossus Cracks Codes Once More

For the first time in more than 60 years a Colossus computer will be cracking codes at Bletchley Park. The machine is being put through its paces to mark the end of a project to rebuild the pioneering computer. The Colossus machine will be pitted against modern computer technology that will also be used to decipher and read the transmitted messages. Tony Sale, who led the 14-year Colossus re-build project, said it was not clear whether the wartime technology or a modern PC would be faster at cracking the codes. "A virtual Colossus written to run on a Pentium 2 laptop takes about the same time to break a cipher as Colossus does," he said.

Microsoft removes another one of WGA's fangs

This morning Microsoft announced another noteworthy change to its flagship Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program - an update to be rolled out later this month to all Vista users that will display a WGA warning dialog box when it detects either of two common Vista activation cracks. In the same announcement, they also for the first time showed screen shots of how WGA changes debuting in SP1 will take some of the bite out of a longstanding Windows product activation rule as well.

Now-departed Microsoft marketing chief Michael Sievert announced last December that Service Pack 1 would drop Vista’s “reduced functionality mode” (the notorious “kill switch”) in favor of a series of notifications and nag screens. WGA senior product manager Alex Kochis posted the details of today’s changes, with screen shots, on Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage blog today.

Microsoft Seals Cracks

With the impending release of Service Pack 1 for Vista, Microsoft looks to slow down the pirates by cutting off two popular hacks to circumvent the Windows Genuine Advantage Program.

Testing both these methods of circumventing Windows activation and Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) has shown me that SP1 effectively ignores both these hacks. Systems that previously were shown to be genuine prior to the installation of SP1 then require activation - and if the system isn’t activated it is marked at non-genuine and enters the nag state.

Apple, AT&T face lawsuit again regarding 3G speeds

Yet another lawsuit is filed against Apple and AT&T claiming that the iPhone fails to live up to 3G speeds, and claims that the AT&T's infrastructure cannot handle the overwhelming 3G signal in comparison to the huge number of iPhones sold. A long list of problems which were not fixed or worsened by the iPhone's 2.0 & 2.1 software updates, cracks formed in the iPhone casing due to faulty manufacturing, are also mentioned in the complaint. This is the second lawsuit filed this week against Apple among many others over the past several months. Apple and AT&T have already been sued in the past for similar reasons and for not maintaining a consistent 3G service.

Corel updates WinDVD to stop AACS hackers

Corel Software, the company that purchased InterVideo last August, have issued a mandatory update to address the recent cracks that have extracted volume and title keys from AACS-protected Blu-ray and HD DVD titles. While the hackers responsible for the AACS cracks did not mention WinDVD by name, it was clear that they were using this software to make their discoveries. " Our decision stems from recent reports that hackers have illegally obtained certain software licensing keys and have used them to duplicate copyrighted content without prior authorization. Corel takes this situation very seriously. We have been working closely with our partners and other industry organizations to ensure we take the steps necessary to prevent copyright infringement from happening in the future ," a Corel spokesperson explained in a press release.

The AACS system of copy protection was designed to adapt to hackers figuring out the Device Keys for playback units: compromised Device Keys can be revoked, and all new high-definition discs made afterwards will simply refuse to play on a revoked device. According to the AACS spec, only titles that are produced after the Device Key has been revoked will fail to play; existing titles should still play back without any problems. However, Corel warns WinDVD users that they should " Please be aware that failure to apply the update will result in AACS-protected HD DVD and BD playback being disabled ." How and whether they really plan to go about disabling playback for HD discs is unclear.

HD DVD, Blu-ray "Managed Copy" coming later this year

The managed copy spec that will allow users to make copies of HD DVD and Blu-ray movies is finally nearing completion. MPAA head honcho Dan Glickman recently said that the AACS support behind managed copy would be ready before the end of the year, so we contacted the HD DVD Promotional Group and our sources in the industry to see what's up.

A spokesperson for the Group told Ars that the full implementation of managed copy will appear only once AACS is finalized. That final specification is expected in the coming months, according to Glickman's comments, although other sources tell us off the record that the commonly occurring AACS cracks aren't helping with the timeline.

The hope, at one studio at least, is to see managed copy in time for the 2007 holiday season, and confidence is high that this schedule will be met...

EU cracks down on fake blogger astroturfing

Nothing beats word of mouth for getting people to put their hand in their pockets. So it didn't take long for cheeky marketing departments to cotton on to the power of blogs and pose as consumers praising their own particular widget to the skies to help lift their top line.

Sneaky, perhaps, but usually legal. Not for much longer, however, as covert commercial blogging - or flogging - will soon be banned by Brussels.

Under laws due to come into force at the beginning of next year, but likely to be delayed until April for the UK, companies posing as consumers on fake blogs, providing fake testimonies on consumer rating websites such as TripAdvisor, or writing fake book reviews on Amazon risk criminal or civil liability.

Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.
