ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.1 Adds Vista Support

Check Point Software today released ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.1, a Vista-compatible version of its flagship security suite. Vista-compatible versions of ZoneAlarm Antivirus and the popular free ZoneAlarm Firewall are also available.

Past versions of ZoneAlarm's products have relied on Microsoft's TDI (Transport Device Interface) to track network behavior. Windows Vista retains support for TDI, but introduces the new Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). While porting to Vista using TDI would have been easier, Check Point chose to support WFP for this Vista-compatible version. When installed on Windows 2000 and XP, however, version 7.1 will still use TDI.

Check Point is the first major security vendor to make use of the Vista-specific Windows Filtering Platform. Company representatives explained that Microsoft will stop fixing problems with TDI in the future, so by utilizing WFP, users can be prepared for Vista threats...

Windows 7 to have only one "compatible" logo

The Register is reporting on an interesting story from WinHEC about how Microsoft is planning to change how it will run the “compatible with Windows 7” logo program.

Microsoft seems to have learnt its lesson after the disaster that was the Vista compatible program which had 4 different logos and would eventually see Microsoft ending up in court facing a class action lawsuit.

Microsoft confirmed to partners on Wednesday that there would only be a single sticker that covers all PC’s peripherals and software that has been certified to work with Windows 7 when it’s released.

The changes are timed to coincide with Microsoft’s continued push towards Windows 7, helping partners to start developing products earlier than with Vista, which had only a relatively small number of compatible programs ready when it launched.

Businesses Still in No Rush to Upgrade to Windows Vista

As the one-year anniversary of the business availability of Windows Vista approaches, many corporations are still holding off on upgrading to the new operating system.

The most commonly cited reasons are the cost of replacing the new hardware required to run Vista optimally, some of the software used by those businesses is still not compatible with Vista, Vista's new and increased functionality and security features are more trouble than they are worth, and Windows XP still meets their current needs.

"It appears that many organizations view Vista as fine for new hardware, but not for upgrades to existing hardware. I am recommending that businesses wait for Vista until they do a hardware refresh and then get it preinstalled," said Michael Cherry, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft.

At WinHEC 2007, Microsoft vigorously defends Vista

To counter flagging expectations around Windows Vista, Microsoft added a last minute keynote this morning from Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President Windows Product Development, at this year's WinHEC, Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles.

Nash used his thirty minutes to talk about the number of device drivers included in the Windows Vista box and available online, and also about the number of compatible or certified for Vista hardware products on the market 100 days after release. While the numbers are high, certainly higher than 100 days after the release of Windows XP, many feel they should be higher. Nash said that vendors are continuing to work with Microsoft on this. "Windows Vista gets better over time," Nash concluded.

On Monday, Microsoft employees bristled at comments from the press that users were unhappy with Windows Vista. With regard to User Account Control (UAC), Nash told reporters that the process is the same in (Mac) OS X...
