08.08.2007Fix Windows Vista Fonts
This just in from Chris
Pirillo on Windows Vista
inconsistency's, this time
it's the fonts:
I’ve been labeled a
nitipicker for seeing skipped
details that few others seem
to see on the surface of an
application’s user
interface. Guilty as charged!
Download
this simple
registry patch, but please
applying it?
I’m not happy that
Microsoft has added yet
another shell font to the mix
with Windows Vista: Segoe UI.
On its own, Segoe UI is an
awesome font - but when
it’s slapped up against
Tahoma, MS Sans Serif,
Microsoft Sans Serif, and/or
Arial - it’s no longer a
clean user experience. In
fact, Vista is downright messy
when it comes to shell fonts -
with some aliased faces
reaching back to the days of
Windows 3.11!
These
blatant font oversights were
shoved onto the backburner for
the sake of (a) 100% backwards
compatibility and (b) time.
However, that didn’t
stop me from diving into
REGEDIT and setting things
straight. The good news? I
believe I’ve figured out
how to make everything inside
of Windows Vista stick to
Segoe UI. It’s a subtle,
yet radical,
transformation.

24.10.2007Microsoft reassures partners on Vista compatibility
Microsoft has used its annual
Worldwide Partner Conference
(WPC) to stress that it's
working to solve stubborn
compatibility problems between
Windows Vista and partner
products.
Chief
operating officer Kevin Turner
told 8,000 WPC delegates that
management had "rallied the
team" and worked "very
hard" after partners and
customers made it clear
application compatibility for
Windows Vista "needed to be
better."
Turner
joined with vice president of
Microsoft's Windows business
group Mike Sievert to claim
that 1,900 applications are
now converted, with 10,000
devices certified either
Windows Vista Ready or Windows
Vista Capable (a weaker
designation).
Using
the kinds of well-worn
corporate qualifiers that call
for a good coachman and a team
of healthy thoroughbreds,
Sievert claimed device
coverage for Windows Vista is
"nearly complete" and "the
packaged applications are now
largely in place."..

21.01.2008Microsoft Releases 2 "Fix Packs" for Windows Vista
Microsoft released a pair of
"fix packs" for Windows
Vista, which are targeted to
improve performance and
compatibility.Among the
reported fixes are
improvements for speeding up
Vista's hibernate and resume
performance, improved
compatibility with printers,
tweaking Vista's memory
management capabilities,
better HD DVD/Blu-ray
playback, and improvements in
file transfers.
Perhaps the most noticeable
fix for gamers is an update
that cures an issue with
graphics cards using Nvidia's
G80 (8800) GPU. When firing up
a game, the 8800 takes a
little time to ramp up-too
much time for Vista, which
thought the card was hanging.
So the game would quit, and
you'd typically see the
"Windows has recovered from a
serious error" message, which
would point to the
Nvidia-based card.
Also fixed are performance
issues with high definition
disc playback (both Blu-ray
and HD-DVD), file copy
performance improvement and
improvements to compatibility
with Canon cameras and HP
printers.
Both
updates are currently
downloadable from the
Microsoft knowledge base. Fix
KB938194 is about 2MB, while
update KB938979 is about a
10MB download. The patch files
are available for both 64-bit
and 32-bit Vista.
