JumpBox Simplifies Server Software Deployment With Virtualization, Partners with Microsoft

JumpBox is a virtual appliance platform that simplifies the deployment of server software on local machines. By utilizing virtual machines and cleverly packaging an operating system, web server, database, application, and any necessary additional libraries or components into a single appliance, JumpBox has made the process of deploying server software exceptionally simple. Instead of spending hours setting up complex programs like Trac, JumpBox deployment slims the process down to a couple of minutes.

JumpBox currently offers virtual appliances for Joomla, Drupal, SugarCRM, vTiger CRM, MediaWiki, TWiki, DokuWiki, PunBB, Trac/Subversion and Wordpress. A number of new appliances are planned for beta testing in the next few weeks, including TikiWiki and Bugzilla.

JumpBox, which launched on July 19 of this year, has attracted over 200 customers that pay for premium services, like technical support, and value added features such as a built in backup and restore mechanism. They currently support virtualization software from XEN, VMWare, and Parallels. Tomorrow they will be announcing a partnership with Microsoft to make JumpBox appliances compatible with Microsoft's Virtual PC and Virtual Server software. Next week, they plan to announce a partnership with Virtual Iron.

Licensing issues for Symantec dings Intel vPro

Symantec has delayed its virtualized security system for Intel's vPro platform because of licensing issues around Windows CE.

The delay is the latest setback for vPro, a bundle of Intel technologies aimed at business users. Among vPro's capabilities are virtualization--which is built into the Core chips used in vPro--and the ability for management tools to access features that are outside the control of the main operating system.

The vPro brand, along with the Viiv consumer platform, was part of Intel's attempt to recreate the success of the Centrino mobile wireless platform for laptops. In July, Intel said it will begin de-emphasizing vPro and Viiv from next year, in favor of the better-known Core brand.

Symantec's Virtual Security Solution (VSS) is designed to run on a virtual appliance outside the main OS, making it harder for users or attackers to get at...

VMWare Eyes Virtual Appliances to Combat Software Bloating

With today's operating systems ever increasing in size and complexity, a result of the wide variety of applications and usage situations they must support, maintenance of the codebase against bugs and security vulnerabilities becomes ever harder. Fortunately, VMWare thinks it has a solution; VMWare co-founder and chief scientist Mendel Rosenblum said in a keynote at Linuxworld in San Francisco that corporations should eye virtual appliances as a way to create a highly customized platform to run their applications. Instead of customizing applications to suit the target OS, Rosenblum advised, developers should consider creating a custom operating system. " "Rather than making your application run on a bunch of different operating systems, you choose one operating system. You bundle it together and you ship this thing around as a virtual appliance. " And an application specific operating system doesn't just cut back on the potential number of bugs and security flaws: developers can also add features that for instance increase the software's performance.

IBM Goes Live with Latest Virtual Business Center

IBM has announced that its new virtual IBM business center is now available online, staffed by IBM sales representatives from around the globe, allowing IBM and its clients to interact, conduct business and form business relationships. The new virtual business center, developed with New Media Consortium Virtual Worlds, features six areas: Reception, Sales Center, Technical Support Library, Innovation Center, Client Briefing Center and Conference Center. With the new virtual business center, users are able to access and search for information by browsing through 3-D bookshelves, looking through a 3-D book or by asking a librarian while the technical support library provides users with access to technical information.

If this experiment in enhancing the customer experience is well-received, we'll expand it by adding more staff and languages ," said Lee Dierdorff, vice president of Web Strategy and Enablement for the Armonk, New York-based IBM.
