Remaining Ultimate Extra Language Packs Released

We are pleased to announce the release of the remaining 19 languages packs for Windows Vista Ultimate. This Ultimate Extras release brings the total number of language packs for use with Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) to 35. Windows Vista Ultimate enables users install multiple languages on their system and quickly switch between them by associating a system language with their login name.

MUI is particularly useful in multilingual homes where multiple people use a single computer and choose different languages for their primary use. People who wish to learn a new language will also find MUI to be a particularly useful feature. We are aware of a very large number of customers who have purchased Ultimate for this feature specifically and are gratified that these customers can now realize the full benefit of Windows Vista Ultimate.

The languages we are adding today are as follows...

Microsoft Captions Language Interface Pack v1.1

The Microsoft Captions Language Interface Pack (CLIP) is a simple language translation solution that uses tooltip captions to display results. Use CLIP as a language aid, to see translations in your own dialect, update results in your own native tongue or use it as a learning tool.

CLIP is designed to enable and support indigenous languages and native dialects and is the result of the close collaboration between Microsoft and local communities. Users will be able to download multiple languages, switching target translations quickly and easily.

To use, simply move your mouse around the screen and halt briefly over any text you want translated. Users can also add their own translations and copy and paste any results.

Translations are available between the following languages: French, Alsace and English.

MISSING: Vista Ultimate Language Packs

If you thought the Ultimate Extras situation couldnt get any worse, then you have much to learn young Jedi, because rock bottom is only an illusion. It appears that what was left of the Ultimate Extras - 16 language packs (I know, they are counted as extras) - have now been sucked into the void of unknown.

Whether this is a widespread technical glitch or intentional symptom as a result of upgrades to the backend in preparations for more and better Ultimate Extras remains to be speculated. Even if all my moneys on a technical glitch, there is still a quantum chance the Ultimate Extras team will deliver on their latest promise to ship the final version of DreamScenes and the remaining 20 Language Packs before the end of summer (September).

However for those of you who are in need of their language fix, a Channel9 member has kindly posted the language pack download links directly from the Windows Update servers.

Microsoft releases remaining Vista SP1 language packs

Microsoft Corp. today released the remaining 31 language editions of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Windows Update. Today's move followed the debut of the first five languages -- English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish -- posted by Microsoft to the Windows Update (WU) service on March 18. Before that, the company had warned customers that it would issue SP1 in two waves, and said the follow-on languages would probably be issued this month.

When Microsoft unveiled SP1 via WU, users griped about not being able to download the service pack because of balky device drivers. As an alternative, Microsoft made available a much larger standalone installer that ignores any possible driver issues. The installer was also updated today to support all 36 languages, and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Microsoft had also slated automatic download and installation of SP1 for "mid-April," possibly earlier, but the mid-point of the month came and went Tuesday without the company pushing the service pack to every eligible Vista user. Instead, users must call up Windows Update and manually select the still-optional download.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Whitepaper

When developing Windows Vista, Microsoft set out to provide higher levels of productivity, mobility, and security, with lower costs. After more than six months of broad availability and usage, it's evident that these investments are improving the Windows computing experience. For example, in the first six months of use, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than Windows XP (Windows Vista had only 12 issues, and Windows XP had 36). According to the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report by Jeffery R. Jones, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than all the popular operating systems he studied.

Although most companies are cautious when deploying a new operating system, many have already started testing and evaluating Windows Vista for deployment, and some have already deployed Windows Vista into their production environments and begun seeing the business benefits Windows Vista can provide.

Microsoft's efforts to provide the best Windows experience ever in Windows Vista did not end with its launch. This white paper describes the ways Microsoft strives to continuously improve Windows Vista. It then introduces Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and describes how the service pack will fit into the ongoing improvement process.

Disappearance Of Vista Language Packs

On Friday 24 August, an internal process change inadvertently caused the current versions of the Windows Vista language packs offered as Ultimate Extras to be withdrawn earlier than normal in preparation for release of new updates to these language packs. This situation has since been resolved and the language packs are once more available to Windows Vista Ultimate customers via Windows Update. The content of the language packs themselves has not been changed.

Finer points:

▪ Validation of these language packs is handled in the same manner as security updates.

▪ If they are accessed directly from Microsoft.com Download Center, then validation is required to download.

▪ If they are accessed via the Windows Update control panel, then validation is required before updates will appear.

▪ If Automatic Update (AU) is enabled in Windows Update, then all of these updates will install automatically. There is no validation on AU.

Admin Pack replacement to be available for Vista after SP1 RTM

Two days ago Kevin Remde from Microsoft posted about there not being an Admin Pack that will run on Windows Vista for administering Windows Server 2008 servers. He did this after learning this from another blog, and during e-mail discussion threads. The recommendation was to use RDP (Terminal Services) instead. Fortunately, there is a group that is indeed building a replacement:

The final word was finally passed down from the group who are building a new tool to replace the Admin Pack for running on Vista, and I have received their permission to repeat it here. Here is the verbatim quote:

The new feature with codename Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT Client) for managing WS08 from Vista SP1 Business, Enterprise and Ultimate will be released as an OOB component shortly after Vista SP1 RTM. In the meantime, you can leverage the Admin Pack for managing WS03 servers remotely (Instructions Here: http://support.microsoft. com/kb/930056). The old Admin Pack will not work against WS08, though.

So.. that's good news! You can use the Admin Pack to manage WS03 servers, or you can use the new Remote Server Administration Tools (which I understand will be much like the ones added to "Longhorn" Beta 3) when they become available, on Vista SP1.

CNET Reviews Windows Vista SP1

A little more than one year after its release, Windows Vista will receive its first service pack update in March. Microsoft says the pack will offer better compatibility with third-party hardware, increased reliability, tighter security, and better performance. But unlike the last Windows Service Pack release, Windows XP SP2--which offered users a new Windows Firewall, an improved Automatic Updates feature, and a pop-up ad blocker for Internet Explorer--Windows Vista SP1 is largely a code update, devoid of new eye candy, and very light on "must-have" features for home users. Most of the features touted by Microsoft are for the Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions of the operating system. Our advice: Be patient, and don't download it once it becomes available. Wait until Windows Vista SP1 is offered to your PC via Microsoft's Automatic Updates service.

Microsoft: XP SP3 won't arrive until '07

Aiming to keep its focus on Windows Vista, Microsoft is now targeting 2007 for its next Windows XP service pack update.

In a posting to its life cycle Web site, Microsoft set a preliminary date of the second half of next year for the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 for both home and professional editions. That puts its debut well past the arrival of Vista, which is slated for the second half of this year and later than both outsiders and some insiders had originally predicted.

"We will be releasing another service pack for XP over the course of the product life cycle, and we are tentatively targeting the second half of 2007 for release," a Microsoft representative said in an e-mail to CNET News.com. "However, right now our priority is Windows Vista--we'll have more information to share about the next service pack for XP after Windows Vista ships." ..

Performance Results Mixed with Vista Service Pack 1

Microsoft's newly released Service Pack 1 may solve some of the performance glitches that have annoyed Windows Vista users and discouraged others from adopting the OS, but it doesn't appear from our initial tests to be a panacea.

In our first tests of the service pack, file copying, one of the main performance-related complaints from Vista users, was significantly faster. But other tests showed little improvement and in two tests, our experience was actually a little better without the service pack installed than with it.
