Windows activation is simple and straightforward if you understand the components. I have had a few customers that stumbled when getting a KMS online
and in every case it has been an issue with name resolution, network connectivity, or they simply did not understand how to use the keys.
Activation is designed to help you with deployments and sustain your environment even in the event a key gets lost. KMS is the simplest
of all the activation methods because you only need to worry about putting a key in one machine. You can then deploy new machines without having to
ever worry about keys unless your device will be off the network for more than 6 months.
This is the first of a two part series
to break down KMS troubleshooting in to a process that should help identify exactly what is at fault. I don't want to mislead or instill fear to
those who are just starting out - the process is normally simple by design. However, for those who have run in to trouble, I'd like to publish a
guide that will help you isolate and correct the issue you've encountered without spinning your wheels. Part 2 will be published next week with a
focus on troubleshooting the server.

Server 2008 is functionally very similar to running it on Vista RTM. You leverage slmgr.vbs to bring the service online and then clients find
the server based on the DNS srv record. BTW, Server 2008 KMS can be run within a virtual environment.
If you want to know
which volume license keys to use when activating new machines running Server 2008, see page 19 in the Planning Guide and the
FAQ. You only need to put one key in your KMS, and it
will handle requests from both Vista and Server 2008. There are separate keys, and unique keys based on which version of server you need to
activate. Before you get excited - this is much easier to understand than it might first seem. Simply decide the "top" version
of Server 2008 you might install and then use that MKS key to activate the service on a 2008 server. All versions in groups below that version
will also activate off that key. The groups are simple...

August numbers are in from Context, the European PC market watcher, and they show that the Vista is anything but Buena for Microsoft. Vista Business,
the, um, business version of Vista, Microsoft's new operating system, slowed during the month, to grab a measly 13 per cent of unit PC sales through
Europe's top IT disties.
Maybe, the customers were all on holiday that month - you know how continental Europeans love to take
August off. And July too...a month in which Vista Business accounted for 17 per cent of unit PC sales. In other words, Vista Business peddling is
pedaling backwards, while sales of XP, Microsoft's ever-so 20th century operating system, appear to be stabilising. Unit sales of Windows XP
Professional PCs dropped four points to 27 per cent in August compared with July. But as Context helpfully notes, they remain double Vista Business
sales, leaving "XP professional appearing still to be the business operating system of choice".

years.
Dell's chief executive has predicted that most of his company's business customers will migrate to Vista by 2009.
Speaking to journalists at Gartner's ITxpo Symposium in Orlando, Florida last week, Michael Dell said: "We have a number
who have gone to Vista, and almost all are planning to go to Vista: some in 2008, and some in 2009. As they take on new IT
deployments with new hardware features, Vista will be much better supported."
However, Dell's assertions run contrary to
research published earlier in October by market research company Context, which found that Vista sales for business machines were slowing.

With Windows 7 poised to begin private testing any time now and to ship by late 2009, a
number of business users are wondering whether they should simply skip Windows Vista all together and wait for 7 instead.

XP and Vista: A Look at the Numbers
Popular opinion is that Microsofts Windows Vista operating system is a dud, a view fueled in part by a low adoption rate among businesses. But a look
back at history shows why it may be premature to write Vista off.
By the end of 2007, businesses computers running Vista
accounted for just 3% of the nearly 1 billion computers in use worldwide, according to the research company Gartner. Sounds dismal, but thats the same
percentage that ran the business version of Microsofts previous OS, XP, in 2002, the first year after its release. (Out of 582 million total
computers.) By the end of 2003, business computers running XP accounted for 10% of the total. Gartner projects that by the end of this year, business
computers running Vista will make up 13% of all computers.

Vista selling really well, says Ballmer
Steve Ballmer is in no way disappointed with Windows Vista. It is selling incredibly well, he told a press conference in Herzeliya, Israel today.
"Vista sells on almost 100 per cent of all the new consumer PCs around the world," the Microsoft CEO proclaimed. He added that the
operating system was also selling on, "45 per cent of all of new business PCs". Which is enlightening, since business users are about the only

The XP alternative for Vista PCs
While Microsoft is still pushing Vista hard, the company is quietly allowing PC makers to offer a "downgrade" option to buyers that get machines
with the new operating system but want to switch to Windows XP.
The program applies only to Windows Vista Business and Ultimate
versions, and it is up to PC makers to decide how, if at all, they want to make XP available. Fujitsu has been among the most aggressive, starting
last month to include an XP disc in the box with its laptops and tablets.
"That's going to help out small- and medium-size
businesses," Fujitsu marketing manager Brandon Farris told CNET News.com.
Hewlett-Packard also started a program in August for
many of its business models. "For business desktops, workstations and select business notebooks and tablet PCs, customers can configure their systems
to include the XP Pro restore disc for little or no charge," HP spokeswoman Tiffany Smith said in an e-mail. She said it was too soon to gauge how
high customer interest has been. "Since we've only been offering (it) for about a month, we don't really have anything to share on demand." ..

Principled Technologies Tests Windows Vista SP1
Nick White: When Windows Vista was originally released just over a year ago Microsoft commissioned Principled Technologies to compare the overall
responsiveness of Windows Vista to Windows XP SP 2 for some common business and home tasks. With the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) Principled has updated their results.
Principled Technologies concluded the following when comparing business scenarios:
- Overall, Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP
performed comparably on most test operations. Performance differences between the two operating systems were typically less than a half second.
Significant differences of over a second occurred on only nine of 128 measures; Windows Vista SP1 led on eight of those.
- Windows Vista
SP1 was noticeably more responsive after rebooting than Windows XP on several common business operations.
- Overall, Windows Vista SP1 was
more responsive than Windows Vista on most comparisons. Performance differences between the two operating systems were typically less than a quarter
second.
