New Vista Build Goes to Select Testers
The November Community Technology Preview (CTP) release of Windows Vista has made its way into the hands of some, but seemingly not many, testers. The build number is 5259. What's new? Windows Antispyware is now integrated in, as expected. Windows Media Player 11 is there. Instant Off seems to be working. And there are a number of user-interface changes, such as an "orb-shaped" start button and a new start-panel menu.

Within the next few weeks, Microsoft will be releasing beta 2 of Windows Vista . The actual ship date of Vista hasn't been announced, but Microsoft's new OS is likely to ship sometime this Fall.
Since Windows Vista (formerly codenamed "Longhorn") was announced, some of the bleeding-edge features have been scaled back. For example, WinFS, a file system built using relational database concepts, won't be included in the final release.

18.4.2006Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification
Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted
here is in
fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and
6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further
stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note
that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

14.12.2007Windows Vista SP1 Build 6001.16633 Info
Some very quick info that we came across regarding the latest release of Vista SP1 to testers. As Mary Jo Foley
previously reported, Microsoft have indeed made the latest build of Vista SP1
(6001.16633) available as a standalone update file to testers.
Build: 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655)
Filename:
windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe
Size: 684MB
Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format. Many (including myself)
were expecting Microsoft to deliver the update for Vista SP1 in the the new Vista/Server 2008-only .msu format used for current Hotfixes.

17.05.2007DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 - The Evolution
As Windows Vista brought to the table the exclusive DirectX 10, the first service pack for the operating system will evolve Microsofts graphics
technology to version 10.1. DirectX 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of Vista Service Pack 1, concomitantly with
the official release of Build 6001.16659. Although the testing milestones of Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP SP3 Beta, are officially
limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of Windows Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft,
and simultaneously test drive DirectX 10.1.
However, Vista users have to understand that DirectX 10.1, as well as DirectX 10 is a
technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series. According to an AMD whitepaper
focused on the implementation of DirectX 10.1 in the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series, the latest application programming interface from Microsoft, manages
to "unlock the state of the art in GPU technology."

31.10.2007Microsoft acknowledges Vista SP1 Refresh 2 = RTM
Which build of Vista SP1 became the release to manufacturing (RTM) edition? This was definitely a topic of high speculation in the last few weeks,
even before SP1 hit the RTM milestone. Many were adamant that SP1 RTM was, or would be, different from the final release candidate, while those on the
other side grasped at straws to prove their suspicions. The Microsoft Watcher, also known as Mary Jo Foley, has finally received confirmation from
Microsoft that the Vista SP1 RTM build (6001-18000) is none other than Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2. The latest official statement from the software giant
is:
"RC Refresh 2 code is the same as RTM. In final stages of a product Microsoft likes to get as much validation as possible before
releasing. The release candidate ended up being a high enough quality to be approved to release to manufacturing."

08.02.2008Vista SP1: RC1 test build goes to 15,000 testers
Microsoft has delivered yet another test build of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 to testers. On November 14, the new build — designated the
SP1 Release Candiate (RC) Preview — went to a slightly expanded group of 15,000 pre-selected testers. Microsoft made a first public beta of
Vista SP1 available to 12,000 testers in September. The new build, No. 6001.17042, can be downloaded by invited testers from Microsoft’s
private Connect test site.
Microsoft has been making builds of Vista SP1 available to progressively larger groups of testers since earlier
this spring. The company has been dangling the promise of making a test build Vista SP1 available more broadly, first as a semi-public build
downloadable by Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) members, and ultimately, by any interested parties. Microsoft posted a note to MSDN two weeks ago
announcing avaiablility of a Vista SP1 beta, but later pulled the note and apologized for the false alarm.

17.07.2006Vista file copying showdown: RTM vs SP1
Long Zheng: Copying files is the Achilles heel of Windows Vista, ścalculating time remaining¦ť the blue screen of death equivalent. If anyone tells
you Windows Vista isnt slow at copying files, then they obviously havent downloaded any DVDrips and tried to move it onto another computer. It was
anticipated Windows Vista Service Pack 1 would fix this problem amongst other things.
As announced this week, the first beta
build of SP1 (6001.16659) has been released on Microsoft Connect. The initial reaction from most tester has been largely positive noting improvements
in file operations such as moving, copying and deleting files. However I havent seen anyone post any benchmarks or evidence to prove it is indeed
faster.
