1.2.2008Texas bans Windows Vista from government use
Windows Vista wasn't the biggest commercial success; many companies refused to use it initially, and are sticking with XP for now. It's
strange, however, that the state of Texas has only just now declared it unfit for government use, despite a service pack having been released and many
initial issues fixed. The news comes from Computer World, and states that it is now not allowed for government agencies to upgrade to Windows Vista,
because "of the many reports of problems with Vista." They say that they are not picking on Microsoft, but that they just don't trust the most
recent Windows operating system, and that Windows XP does everything they need to.

the contracts and licenses. Once the license expires, the government has to once again pay out. With open-source software, this could be prevented.

23.11.2006Cuba Bans Windows
In an effort to rid every computer in the country of the American-designed Windows OS, the Cuban government has banned the software and created its
own Linux-based operating system.
The Communist country 90 miles off the coast of Florida calls the Linux OS "Nova", and the government
considers it an integral piece in the fight against U.S. hegemony in Cuba. Shown at a Havana conference dedicated to "technological sovereignty",
the goal is to have Nova replace Windows on computers all across the island.
While most of the world has enjoyed a consumer computer
market for decades, the Cuban government only started allowing such a market last year. According to Cuba University's Information Sciences Director
Hector Rodriguez, around 20 percent of computers on the island are already running some sort of Linux-based operating system.
The turn
away from Windows is the latest move in Cuba's resistance to all things American, which has been ongoing since Fidel Castro took over the island
nation in 1959. Rodriguez certainly sees a ideological link between Linux and Cuba, "The free software movement is closer to the ideology of the
Cuban people, above all for the independence and sovereignty."

26.11.2008Netherlands Eases Segway Ban
The Netherlands is to relax its ban on the Segway motorized scooter, a two-wheeled, gyroscopically-balanced machine. " The general use of the
Segway will be allowed on bicycle paths and roads under the condition that a maximum speed of 25 km per hour will be kept to, " the Dutch
government said in a statement. The electric scooter is currently banned on public streets in the Netherlands and many other European countries have
placed restrictions on the use of the machine because of safety fears.
The Dutch authorities said all Segway users must be 16 or older and
must be insured when the ban eases from this summer. The government said it had not yet decided on whether the machine, which moves when the rider
leans forward or backwards, will need to have license plates or some other form of identification. Disabled persons will be able to use the Segway on
pavements up to a maximum speed of 6 kph.

09.10.2007Creative Goes After Driver Modder
Since the release of Windows Vista, Creative has promised their Sound Cards as being 'Vista Ready'. Unfortunately, as many unlucky customers
did discover, this is not true. What the users actually found were buggy, feature crippled drivers. Creative insisted that features such as Decoding
of Dolby® Digital and DTS signals and DVD-Audio which worked fine in WinXP, would not work on Windows Vista. With Creative releasing less
than one new driver a year, things seemed bleak. Fortunately, a talented user, Daniel_K, was recently able to 'fix' many of the drivers,
enabling the incompatible features and also fixing many bugs. Just today Creative has decided to put a stop to this. They removed all links to his
modified drivers, and banned several users who were posting links to the now banned drivers.
