Dan, from Duluth, or 'goldeneyemaster' as he is known, told the game spot forum here that he thinks the main reason that the xBox 360 freezes is because the power supply overheats. The solution is to lift the power supply off the floor and allow the air to circulate better around it.

Qwest isn't sure if its throttling bandwidth

It seems that Qwest can't decide if it's throttling bandwidth or not. A user on Consumerist.com states that Qwest tech support told him that they do throttle their bandwidth for excessive users, and then sometime later, the tech support agent called him back and reported that they do not throttle bandwidth. According to the user who is based in Washington, Qwest puts rate limits on streaming intensive sites like Youtube. The user confirmed this by running several speed tests and then viewing Youtube again and was receiving the slower data rate. Then by using an external proxy he was able to achieve much faster speeds than if he directly connected to the site.

Comcast bandwidth throttling effective in all markets

Comcast is fighting back against what it calls excessive bandwidth users. The company confirmed that it has successfully deployed throttling technology to all its markets. Comcast claims that the technology is to help make everyone get the same experience and have equal opportunity to the bandwidth. The throttling works in a manner that your data can be put in two classes; PBE (Priority Best-Effort) or BE (Best-Effort) with preference being PBE. This is determined by "sustained use of 70% of your up or downstream throughput triggers the BE state, at which point you'll find your traffic priority lowered until your usage drops to 50% of your provisioned upstream or downstream bandwidth for up to 15 minutes.

Cable Companies Facing Big Bandwidth Crunch

With internet usage expanding exponentially and demand for high-speed connections ever growing, cable internet companies may soon be facing serious bandwidth issues, according to a report by ABI Research. The problem comes from more demanding applications, including high-definition video, video on demand, online gaming, and higher-bandwidth Internet applications, which could lead to fewer high-definition television channels and sputtering internet speeds. " The increasing bandwidth demands on cable operators will soon reach crisis stage, yet this is a 'dirty little industry secret' that no one talks about, " said Stan Schatt, VP and research director for ABI Research.

Currently, cable providers utilize roughly 750MHz worth of bandwidth: 676MHz for downstream applications like analog cable, digital cable, HD programming, video on demand, Internet data, and VoIP service and 54MHz for upstream transmissions; according to ABI, however, 750MHz just isn't enough to deal with future growth. " Uploading bandwidth is going to have to increase, " Schatt stated. " And the cable providers are going to get killed on bandwidth as HD programming becomes more commonplace. "

How to fix 3 "broken features" in Windows Vista

Certain problems with Vista won’t be fixed by service packs or by updates but rather were actually part of the design. Users got used to XP and the way XP did things but Vista does some things differently. To help get your sanity back here are three things you can do to make Vista more amiable.

First, let’s tackle UAC. Vista’s UAC enables account controls which requires you to specify program actions when they need elevated permissions. The problem is that almost every action in Vista will require such. This can be turned off while still leaving the more important virtualization protection in place.

There are two ways to do this, by using native commands in Vista which is a 6-step process and should be avoided by everyone unless you want to create “Local Security Policy” specifically for that. I can’t recommend doing so. Instead, download Tweak UAC which will allow you to painlessly enable quiet mode.

IIS7 - Configure Throttling for your documents (any MIME type) and save Bandwidth costs

Do you have a high traffic site where you have a lot of WMV/AVI/FLV/PDF documents (or any other MIME type) where your maximum bandwidth of the site is utilized? Do you ever think where majority of the bandwidth would go? Most of the users do not completely watch the video or listen to audio, or do not read the complete PDF file (or any progressive download document). Assume that they just watch for 5 minutes of your 1 hour long Flash Video (.flv). How much of your bandwidth (for download) would be used for this? You should try answering this question yourself.

TWC delays bandwidth cap rollout after public outcry

A few days ago Neowin reported that Time Warner Cable would be expanding bandwidth cap testing to more regions. The extremely limiting bandwidth cap, supprisingly, isn't sitting well with consumers and TWC is having trouble finding potential beta testers. In a nice way TWC is reporting that after listening to customers they decided to delay the testing. What really probably happened was that angry customers were calling up and giving the TWC representatives a piece of their mind. TWC states that they will push the rollout back to October as if that makes it any easier to swallow.

Unofficial fix issued for Vista networking flaw

A system-crashing bug with potential malware implications has been uncovered in Vista. But a fix for the vulnerability, which revolves around flaws in the operating system's network stack, may have to wait until the next service pack.

The TCP/IP stack buffer overflow was discovered by security researchers at Austrian firewall firm Phion in October. Details of the flaw, which also creates a potential mechanism to inject hostile code into vulnerable systems, were disclosed in a posting to BugTraq on Friday.

The vulnerability affects Enterprise and Ultimate versions of Vista in both 32 and 64 bit flavours of the operating system. XP is immune. Phion has published a workaround in the absence of a fix from Microsoft itself...

Gritty Nits - Fix Internet Explorer 7 Crashes in Vista

A lot of you may have seen Internet Explorer crash "Internet Explorer has stopped working" when closing the browser in Windows Vista. It happens all too often and while it no longer takes the operating system out with it, it is still annoying.

There are a lot of reasons why Internet Explorer will do this, but one we have found that really stands out is Adobe's Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control. Seven (7) of ten (10) IE 7 crashes I have personally seen, are related to the Flash Player plug-in.
