In progress: Vista updates!

In progress right now is a beta testers chat with MS experts on the future of IE7 and Vista. Here are some parts of the chat that may be interesting to you... more to come shortly:

SamW [MS] (Expert):
Q: [17] When will you release the November CTP? Only 2 days left of November!

A: There will be no CTP for Vista in November because we are targeting for most features to be code-complete by end of December and resources efforts are going towards that effort. We should have a CTP in December before the Christmas holiday. These interim changes have no impact on our general availability target for Windows Vista. We are on track to deliver a high-quality Windows Vista in the 2nd half of 2006.

Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert):
Q: [54] Can someone clear up what seems to be confusion on the groups over the release of Build 5259? Did it go to selected testers or TAP because date of release and extent seems confused. I notice Mario mentions it today.

A: A specific, small group of partners received access to 5259. It is an IDW build and has not gone through the CTP testing process.

WinVerifyTrust update will be mandatory for WSUS

Cecilia Cole: A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Windows Vista Service Pack 1s availability to WSUS. In that post, we mentioned that you should install the WinVerifyTrust update (KB 938759) if you are running your WSUS server on a Windows 2003 server to prevent Windows Vista SP1 from being continually re-downloaded to the server once the service pack is released to WSUS.

Today, wed like to let you know that, in order to make sure all customers are well protected, we will be marking this particular update as mandatory, which means it will appear in the Updates/WSUS Updates node of the Admin console, and will be auto-approved by default (since the Advanced/WSUS Updates checkbox is checked by default in Options/Automatic Approvals).

Windows Vista Ultimate and WSUS

Just a quick one this time <"We've heard that one before" I hear you cry!> about Windows Vista Ultimate and WSUS. What is WSUS I hear you ask? Well, it stands for Windows Server Update Services and essentially, allows administrators to deploy updates across a network, so instead of all the users on your network navigating to Windows Update and downloading the updates separately, just download them once, and distribute using WSUS.

The reason for the post is that WSUS currently does not allow Windows Vista Ultimate Extras to be distributed via WSUS. Not good. A view which is backed up by Erik Neuenschwander, who works in the Ultimate Extras team here at Microsoft "That's not a good situation for customers, so we plan to improve it. The Ultimate team is working with Windows Update to revise the Extras to be offered to WSUS"

Erik goes on to say "We cut support for WSUS at launch to reduce the test burden, and because we didn't think many WSUS environments would deploy Ultimate. We're hearing that we were wrong, so all the Wave Zero Extras will be offered to WSUS later this year."

WSUS 3.0 SP1 on Windows Update coming soon

WSUS 3.0 SP1 will be available on Windows Update within the next few weeks. The package behavior is:

  1. Upgrade all previous versions of WSUS starting with WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 RTM running on Windows 2003 SP1+

  2. All upgrades will require user interaction.

  3. This service pack package will supersede WSUS 3.0 RTM packages.

  4. Block upgrades of all WSUS installation using remote SQL. This is now a manual upgrade process.

  5. Do not support upgrading previous versions of WSUS running on Windows 2008.

  6. System Center Essentials 1.0 RTM will not be upgraded to WSUS 3.0 SP1. This will be handled by a future release of System Center Essentials.

Note: WSUS 2.0 SP1 and WSUS 2.0 Client SelfUpdate Update for WSUS 2.0 SP1 packages will be expired. These updates are still available on the Download Center.

ATI Radeon Graphic Card updates... 3892...

A few people on the microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services newsgroup mentioned concern over a flood of ATI Radeon Graphic Card updates. There were close to 4000 sync'ed recently to their WSUS 3 and WSUS 2 servers, and there was worry that something strange had happened.

Short answer: It's fine, though unpleasant to look at.

Here's some more background, partially from Bobbie Harder and with additional material from the rest of the product team. We'll give you the technical backgrounder, and then some tips and tricks for dealing with large numbers of items in the UI.

As a reminder, the newsgroups are really the best place to discuss issues, provide feedback, and get help from the community and MVPs. Responses to blog posts are occasionally read, but eventually get drowned in automated spam.

Unexpected UI errors in WSUS

Bobbie Harder: We have been hearing reports from some customers who use WSUS that they have been having trouble accessing their administration consoles. We have confirmed the cause of this issue and fixed it on our servers, which will automatically fix the issue for most customers on their next synchronization cycle. This post will explain the issue in detail and provide steps customers can take to get WSUS working again even sooner.

The cause of this issue is that, on Sunday evening, Microsoft renamed a product category entry for Forefront to clarify the scope of updates that will be included in the future. Unfortunately the category name that was used included the word Nitrogen in double quotes (appearing as Nitrogen). A double quote is a restricted character within WSUS, which created an error condition on the administration console. This issue occurred on many WSUS servers that synchronized with Microsoft servers between 5pm Sunday and 11am Monday Pacific Time.

WSUS sync snafu cripples enterprise update ability on eve of Patch Tuesday

A glitch in the software that most midsize and large businesses use to update their Microsoft applications and operating systems has some administrators scrambling a day before Patch Tuesday.

If the problem in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is not fixed before tomorrow, administrators will not be able to download and deploy the vulnerability patches and other nonsecurity updates Microsoft Corp. has planned for tomorrow, said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at security tools vendor nCircle Inc. "It appears that anybody who synced WSUS today or yesterday is essentially DOA," he said. The default WSUS setting is to sync daily.

WSUS users began reporting the error this morning when they first accessed the WSUS console. According to those reports, the error read, "The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error."

"WSUS was working without any problems before the weekend, nothing has changed on the server," said a user identified as Drobb on a forum hosted by a third-party site dedicated to the update management software.

WSUS users get a surprise: Windows 7 client

Some Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) users got a surprise on their patching servers on August 20: A mention of Windows 7 Client.

The actual Windows 7 client code was not distributed via WSUS. But the appearance of Windows 7 on the list of products that will be serviced over WSUS paves the way for Microsoft to start pushing something Windows-7-related to customers in the coming months.

“WSUS doesn’t push products - just patches. so this could just be in preparation for something that is weeks or months in the future. It’s just a new category.” said one WSUS customer, who confirmed that he saw the “Windows 7″ box on his update check list this morning.

Using the Microsoft Update Catalog Site with System Center Configuration Manager

The Microsoft Update Catalog site can be used with System Center Configuration Manager 2007 to deploy updates that are not automatically synchronized with WSUS. For example drivers, QFEs, or other optional updates can be downloaded from the site (more info here). This is a great additional capability, but how exactly can you make it work with SCCM?

Microsoft is also planning to release high-priority, non-security updates on Windows Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as well as high-priority, non-security updates on Microsoft Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Microsoft's fix for Automatic Updates lockup not working

Even after users deployed a fix suggested by Microsoft Corporation, Windows systems are still locking up. Symptoms of the long-running problem, which the Windows Server Update Services team dubbed the "svchost/msi issue", include 100% CPU usage by svchost.exe and its multiple processes when Automatic Updates is in use or simply enabled on a machine. A hotfix for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems is available on the Microsoft support site and will be pushed out via Microsoft's usual update services, including Windows Update and Microsoft Update, late this month or in early June.

Users will also need to download and install the new stand-alone WSUS 3.0 client, even those who don't rely on the enterprise-centric WSUS for updates, to completely patch the problem. " It's important to keep in mind that the new WSUS client is only a partial solution and clients must have both KB927891 and the new 3.0 client installed for a full solution ," according to the WSUS team blog. The new client and the WSUS update to Version 3.0 will be available on May 22 but is also already available on MSDN. Angered users poured out their frustration on the WSUS blog after installing the hotfix and updating the WSUS client; the issue was still present. The only temporary fix is to disable AU - obviously not the best solution.

Inside MSRC: Microsoft releases searchable update database

The Microsoft Update Catalog is a searchable catalog of all security updates, drivers and service packs that are available through Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU). You can also use the Microsoft Update Catalog to obtain and deploy hotfixes. You can use the Microsoft Update Catalog to distribute these updates through a corporate network using tools such as WSUS 3.0, System Center Essentials (SCE) or System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).

The Microsoft Update Catalog expands the capabilities of your update deployment infrastructure and provides the capability to deploy hotfixes to address known issues in security updates when they occur. We encourage all who are using WSUS 3.0, SCE or SSCM to evaluate the Microsoft Update Catalog for their environment.

Microsoft's Fix for Lockup Not Working

Windows XP systems are still locking up during patch update attempts -- even after users deployed the fix suggested by Microsoft Corp.

Symptoms of the long-running problem -- which the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) team dubbed the "svchost/msi issue" -- include 100% CPU usage by svchost.exe and its multiple processes during Automatic Updates scanning, update downloads and sometimes even if AU is simply enabled on a machine.

"Of course, the computer is virtually unusable" when that happens, said a user identified as Foxy-Perth on the Windows Update support forum.

Every month at patch time, Microsoft's support boards fill with complaints from users. It was no different this week. "I have 6 (and counting) computers having issues with SVCHOST process running at near 100% CPU utilization," said TKovacs on Wednesday, one day after Microsoft unveiled seven security updates. "Disabling Automatic Updates resolves the issue. did Microsoft just release?"

WSUS: Service Packs may be reported as not applicable even though they are installed

Microsoft addresses reports of forced updates and reboots

Microsoft has posted a long and complex explanation to its Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) blog, explaining the latest case of why software updates are being pushed to users who believe they’ve turned automatic updating off.

The UK Register reported on October 25 that a number of admins were seeing Microsoft Desktop Search 3.01 pushed out to users via Microsoft’s WSUS enterprise patching/update system, in spite of having opted out of this “resource-hogging search app.”

Bobbie Harder, Microsoft Product Manager for WSUS, explained why some companies were seeing the updated Windows Desktop Search bits (aka, the updated package for KB917013) pushed to their users. It turns out Microsoft changed the deployment rules after the original release of Windows Desktop Search. Harder noted:

“The original update release, released February 2007 as an optional update, was only applicable on systems which had a version of Windows Desktop Search installed. The recent update Revision 105, had the applicability logic expanded to be applicable to all systems regardless if a prior version of Windows Desktop Search was installed, IF of course, approved in the WSUS Administrative UI or via Administrator-set auto-approval rules.”

Microsoft fixes month-old WSUS patch snafu

Microsoft Corp. yesterday issued a fix for a flaw that had blocked users from grabbing security patches through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) for several weeks.

The hotfix, which Microsoft outlined in a support document published Wednesday, addresses a snafu first reported by the company's WSUS program manager, Cecilia Cole, three weeks ago.

At the time, Cole said that PCs with Office 2003, or components of that version of the application suite, were unable to retrieve updates from their designated WSUS servers because of an unspecified bug.

Office 2007 SP1 Update Availability Clarification

Bobbie Harder: Posting this as I've noted just a little bit of confusion with how Office 2007 SP1 is made available for download after it's release yesterday. As you know, Office 2007 SP1 was released yesterday to Microsoft Update, and to WSUS as part of the Tues, Dec 11th release.

As planned, Office 2007 SP1 was not pushed via Automatic Updates. There has been some confusion where Windows Vista customers are seeing Office 2007 SP1 listed as available with an option to install in their Windows Update control panel applet. The new Vista experience of the Windows Update applet combines the convenience of the Microsoft Update site, by isting all applicable available updates, and the best of the Automatic Updates behavior. This allows users to specify what update types they want to automatically download and install (and when), as well as combines the interactive experience of the Microsoft Update site.
