More than a year after Microsoft Corp. shipped Windows XP Service Pack 2 as a massive security-centric OS makeover, customer adoption internationally continues to lag at disappointing levels, according to a senior Redmond executive. Stuart McKee, Microsoft's U.S. National Technology Officer, said the overall install rate of XP SP2 was just shy of 70 percent, but in countries such as Spain and Korea, adoption of the service pack dips into the 50 percent range.
In Japan, Germany and France, the install rate is in the range of 75 percent, McKee said. During a keynote at the Security Summit East here, McKee said Microsoft has so far distributed more than 250 million copies of XP SP2 to provide a hardened shell around the operating system but the low upgrade levels remains a disappointment.

complete opposite of Vista in the enterprise: "Around a quarter of enterprises plan to upgrade to Vista in 2008 although
Forrester said companies may change plans and wait for the release of Windows 7 - pencilled in for the second half of 2009."
Microsoft Corp. made a good move by not linking Office 2007 with Windows Vista, an analyst said today.
"It was a smart
decision to decouple the two," said Kyle McNabb, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc., contrasting the relative success of the two product lines.
"The Office team in particular did well to make sure that Office wasn't coupled with Vista but was with SharePoint. That SharePoint 'drag' has
been very positive for Microsoft."
Office 2007 adoption surveys conducted with about 250 IT decision-makers in North America,
the U.K., France and Germany found that 93% of enterprises plan to deploy part or all of the suite within the next 12 months, McNabb said. More than
four in every 10 companies polled already have Office 2007 in the hands of workers.

back at history shows why it may be premature to write Vista off.
By the end of 2007, businesses computers running Vista
accounted for just 3% of the nearly 1 billion computers in use worldwide, according to the research company Gartner. Sounds dismal, but thats the same
percentage that ran the business version of Microsofts previous OS, XP, in 2002, the first year after its release. (Out of 582 million total
computers.) By the end of 2003, business computers running XP accounted for 10% of the total. Gartner projects that by the end of this year, business
computers running Vista will make up 13% of all computers.

This past week, we released Windows Vista adoption case studies for Eastman Chemical and PPG. The Eastman story focuses on the timing of
their refresh cycle and their evaluation of whether to stay on Windows XP or move to Vista. The Vista decision came from a number of factors,
not the least of which is getting better control and limiting administrator privileges to their corporate machines. As part of their
rollout plan, they did a small pilot to their North American IT group of 350 users in October, 2007, and then to the broader global IT group soon
after. After a successful pilot, they began deploying in February, 2008 and expect to be rolled out to most/all of its 10,000 users by August,

pour an estimated $300 million into a new Vista marketing campaign -- news that

Ballmer: It's OK to wait for Windows 7
Some companies are planning to skip Windows Vista, and that's OK, according to Steve Ballmer. But Microsoft's CEO hopes that those companies come
back for Windows 7.

McAfee: Businesses will dodge Vista in 2008
Vista uptake is unlikely to increase dramatically during 2008, according to security vendor McAfee, who said that businesses are "leery" of
upgrading from current Microsoft operating systems.
One reason businesses have not been keen to upgrade to Vista is the hardware
that is needed to handle the resource-hungry operating system, David Marcus, security research manager for McAfee Avert Labs, told ZDNet Australia

"In 2007 there has been less than 10 percent market penetration for Vista," said Marcus. "There

Microsoft chair Bill Gates today noted at a European news conference that sales of Windows Vista have reached 140 million copies worldwide. The update
is the first since the company crossed the 100 million mark at the start of the new year, although Gates doesn't clarify when the company reached
the newer threshold. This demonstrates that Vista continues to sell at a "very rapid" rate, according to the Microsoft co-founder.

tracked between January and April, the number represents about 10 million copies of Vista sold per month in the first third of 2008 and signals a
slight increase in the sales rate for the operating system, which averaged at just over 9 million copies sold per month in 2007. However, the sales
rate is half that of the Windows update's initial results in the first two months of its launch, when it sold as many as 20 million copies per

Vista adoption rate 10 times that of OS X
Apple fans have made much of the fact that the newest figures from Net Applications show that Apple's share of the operating system market has jumped
almost 32% in the past year. But they're ignoring a simple fact: Vista's market share during that same time leaped more than 355%. When you add in
other Windows versions, Microsoft owns more than 90% of the market.
Net Applications reports that the Mac had 7.94% market share in June,
up from 6.03% a year ago. Going from a little more than 6% to just under 8% may be a big gain when measured as a percentage of growth. But when seen
in absolute numbers, it's not particularly impressive.
Vista, by way of contrast, showed far more explosive growth. In June, 2007, it
had 4.54% market share. In June, 2008, it had reached 16.14% --- more than a 355% gain. Those numbers are substantial not just in percentage terms,
but in raw terms as well. Apple would sell the first-born children of most of its employees if it could ever get to a 16% market share.
