29.08.2007How Microsoft Can Save Vista And Windows Server 2008
Mitchell Ashley: Over the weekend my son Phil and I built a computer and a server for the test lab I use in my business (building computers is also a
hobby we share). One of the machines was a Vista box, the other was a server which I'm testing the Windows Server 2008 RC-1 Hyper-V software that
came out last Thursday. I'm sure I'll be writing about the Hyper-V RC-1 software in several upcoming blog posts.
It caused me
to think about 2008 and to look back at the 2007 ups and downs of Vista since its introduction earlier in the year. The Vista SP1 service pack is
coming in February 2008, while at the same time Vista is being compared to Windows ME, another Windows operating system Microsoft "didn't get
right".

18.12.2007Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista
It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t
easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.
Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version
of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about
unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008
includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.
A
Microsoft
employee and
third party website have created tutorials on how to
use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this
will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able
to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.

As some of you may recall, Windows Server 2008 shipped

15.10.2008Modifying the All Users profile in Vista or Windows Server 2008
Peter Fitzsimon: Ok, so I just spend a few whistful hours trying to work out how to modify the "All Users" profile on a Windows Server 2008 system.
I wanted to add a program to run at login (e.g. in the Start Menu|Programs|Startup directory) for all users that login, but things are now a bit
different with Vista and Windows Server 2008.
I have found quite a few people asking similar questions on the Internet but no one
seems to have offered a solution that works so I thought I'd post my findings.
Firstly, for those who haven't hit this before,
the "C:Documents and Settings" directory where user profiles are stored in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems has changed to "C:Users"
in Vista and Windows Server 2008. (I regularly encounter XP users who have upgraded to Vista getting confused by this one)

24.02.2008Windows Server 2008 is better than Vista, but why?
IT infrastructure
veteran Mark Wilson
asks:
It seems that, wherever you look, Windows Server 2008 is almost universally acclaimed. And rightly so - I believe that it is a fantastic
operating system release (let's face it, Windows Server 2003 and R2 were very good, too) and is packed full of features that have the potential to
add significant value to solutions.
So, tell me, why are the same journalists who think Windows Server 2008 is great, still
berating Windows Vista - the client version of the same operating system codebase?
The short answer is that Server
2008 delivers new features that customers wanted, whereas Vista delivers new features that Microsoft thought its customers should want. However, it
seems there may be more to it than that. Maybe Server 2008 really does perform better than Vista.

29.01.2009Users may need Vista to make most of Server 2008
Companies installing Windows Server 2008 may have to buy extra Microsoft software, such as Windows Vista, to use more advanced features, analyst firm
Gartner has said.
John Enck, research director at Gartner, said that although making additional investments would not be a
barrier to using the operating system, companies should be clear that installing Windows Server 2008 could influence their future choice of software
applications.
"Combining Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in the same environment strengthens TCP/IP networking, network
access protection and administering policies as well as quality of service settings. However, Windows Server also provides 'plumbing' that
influences the selection of other products," he said.

02.11.2007What is the WINSXS directory in Windows 2008 and Windows Vista and why is it so large?
Joseph Conway: A commonly asked question among people looking at a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 installation is why is the WinSxS folder so
big?! To answer that question I need to first describe componentization, and how components are managed in Windows Vista.
One
of the largest changes between previous versions of Windows and Windows Vista was a move from an INF described OS to componentization. A component in
Windows is one or more binaries, a catalog file, and an XML file that describes everything about how the files should be installed. From associated
registry keys and services to what kind security permissions the files should have. Components are grouped into logical units, and these units are
used to build the different Windows editions...

20.03.2008Will Vista and Windows Server 2008 really be better together?
Microsoft doesnt trot out its old Better Together marketing campaign much any more. But Better Together will be one of the messages Microsoft will
be playing up in February, as it marches towards
its big-bang Windows Server
2008 launch.
Microsofts premise is that the combination of Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 on the desktop and Windows Server 2008
on the back-end will be preferable to running either product by itself.
As James Senior, a Microsoft Technical Specialist, noted
on his blog recently,
Microsoft is emphasizing that Vista and Server 2008 came from the same core. Senior points to a Windows Server 2008 Overview
article that explains the shared heritage of the pair...

30.01.2008Did Microsoft Lose XP SP3 on the Way to Vista SP1 RTM?
Windows XP Service Pack 3,
Windows Vista Service Pack
1 and
Windows Server 2008... In the
end its all Windows to Microsoft. Right? Well... in all fairness, you do have to keep in mind that all Windows platforms are equal, but some Windows
operating systems are more equal than others... And in this context, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are privileged over Windows XP. Microsoft
is essentially choosing to ignore the vast majority of Windows users.
According to data from Net Applications, the install base
of XP is over 75% of all the operating systems, with Vista at just over 10%. But statistics are by no means impressive to Microsoft. Throughout the
development process of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008, the Redmond company has been pushing Windows XP SP3 to the background. Even though XP SP3
was developed alongside Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008.

05.02.2008Enable Vistas two-way firewall with Vista Firewall Control
Microsoft ships Vista with a better firewall than previous versions of Vista but its configuration isnt so great right out of the box and unless you
want to set up rules manually, yourself, its just better to run a third party firewall. But that can pose entirely new problems.
It seems that many
third
party solutions dont play nice with Vista in one or more ways. Some can prevent Vista from retrieving updates, others can freeze the operating
system seemingly at random and others just plain dont work at all.
That leaves running the Vista firewall itself. Running the
firewall thats built in to the operating system is not something I usually recommend unless you have Mac OSX or Linux which arent very prone to any
kind of attack.
