The screencast that I was most interested in was the Sidebar. Similar in appearance and functionality to the Dashboard feature of Mac OS X Tiger, the Vista Sidebar allows users to manage their gadgets (Microsoft's term for widgets) and other content such as RSS feeds.

31.05.2006Windows Vista RC2 Build 5744 Released
Microsoft has just released
build 5744 of Vista for
Technical Beta testers on
Microsoft Connect.
On the connect website it
says: Windows Vista RC1
(5744-16384) is here!
Jim Allchin's post on
Connect:
People asked for it, and
here it is, Windows Vista RC2!
We wanted you to be the first
to get these bits; next week
they'll be available to a
broader set of customers via
MSDN and TechNet.
All your great feedback has
helped us focus on nothing but
bug fixes over the past month
since RC 1 - each and every
day. There are thousands of
quality improvements since
Windows Vista RC1. You'll
probably notice improvements
in performance, application
compatibility, as well as fit
and finish work. We will
continue improving quality
until RTM. If you are an ISV,
please use this build
(certainly at least RC1 or
later) to get certified. Visit
www.innovateonvista.com for
more information on logo
certification.
You
are integral to this creation
and refinement process. We are
just around the corner from
RTM and shipping this great
product to the world. This
will be the last build made
available prior to RTM, so
please keep the feedback
coming so we can hit the
finish line. Thanks for your
help in finishing the job!

08.01.2008Maximizing Sidebar Gadgets
Many PC OEMs ship Windows
Vista computers with Windows
Sidebar enabled, usually only
displaying the simple clock,
photos and RSS feed gadgets.
You may've found that they
install their own home-grown
gadgets to show off additional
features or apps installed on
the PC, or as sales tools for
other products. You may even
have turned off the Sidebar
because you already have a
clock in the systray and you
use other ways to check RSS
feeds.
If so, you're
missing out, as there's a
Windows Sidebar gadget for
almost anything you might
want: PC utilities, music,
messaging, traffic reporting,
searching or just a quick game
can be yours with a click of
the mouse. If you haven't
taken the time to explore
gadgets beyond those loaded by
default, take a minute to
right-click the Sidebar and
select 'Add Gadgets.' From
there, click 'Get More
Gadgets Online' -- youll find
over 1000 different gadgets
available for download.
There are still other ways
to find gadgets: visit the
Microsoft
Gadgets Gallery,
Windows Live
Gallery and
Code
Project for hundreds more.
In addition, you'll find
links to resources for
developers and a way to submit
your own gadgets for others to
use.

03.02.2006Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade
DailyTech has posted a 7-step
workaround courtesy of Paul
Thurrott (via Microsoft
internal documents) on how to
perform a clean install with a
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per
Microsoft's new licensing
requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a
Windows Vista Upgrade from
within Windows XP and to make
matters worse, the Windows XP
license is forfeited. The
process may be tedious, but
few will argue when they
compare the price differences
between the upgrade and retail
versions. Here we go:
- Boot from the
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and
start the setup
program.
- When prompted
to enter your product key, DO
NOT enter it. Click "Next"
and proceed with setup. This
will install Windows Vista as
a 30-day trial.
- When
prompted, select the edition
of Vista which you have
purchased and continue with
setup.
- Once setup has
been completed and you have
been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the
install program from within
Windows Vista.
- This
time, type in your product key
when prompted.
- When
asked whether to perform an
Upgrade or Custom (advanced)
install, choose Custom
(advanced) to perform a clean
install of Vista. Yes, this
means that you will have to
install Vista for a second
time.
- Once setup has
completed for the second time,
you should be able to activate
Windows Vista normally. You
can also delete the
Windows.old directory which
contains information from the
first Vista
install.

09.02.2006PINNED: Windows Vista RC2 Released to Testers
Microsoft just released the
last pre-release build of
Windows Vista to its technical
beta-testers. As a last beta
build, although it is
currently impossible to know
exactly what it contains, it
should feature a whole lot of
fit & finish improvements,
including the new maximized
borders, performance and
compatibility improvements,
along with the usual bug
fixes.
The final
build string is
5744.16384.061003-1945,
meaning it's been compiled
tuesday. Public Customer
Preview Program links may
follow soon, though members of
the program will have to wait
a bit longer. File sizes are
2,552.57 MB for the x86
version, and 3,609.21 MB for
the x64 one.
Update: No
new sounds, no new UI styles,
and no "fixed" maximized
borders are featured in this
build.

07.10.2006WebSlices Hit the Desktop
Sarah Perez: I just saw
a post this morning about
Sean Lyndersay's new Sidebar gadget called the "
WebSlice Viewer Gadget." This brilliant little
creation brings IE8's WebSlices (bits of web content that you can access from the new IE8 Favorites Bar) right to your desktop via a simple Vista
Sidebar gadget.
The gadget, currently
in alpha (you've been warned!), requires Vista (unknown if x64 supported,
but let us know), IE8, and a web page that has
some WebSlices. Each
instance of the WebSlice Viewer shows only one WebSlice, so you will need to open multiple gadgets to show multiple views.>
