Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light

Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista experience a tiny bit.

Real Desktop comes it two forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and with Light, not so much.

The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to mess them up.

3D desktop revealed in recent Apple patent filing

Dozens of Apple patent applications were published lately revealing research that Apple had completed in 2007 on many topics encompassing future versions of Mac OS X. The most intriguing is a series of patent applications which describe a "Multidimensional" user interface. Apple has essentially been working on true 3D desktop environments. It's not clear when and if Apple will decide to implement these new 3D desktop design ideas into a future version of Mac OS X. The 3D desktop idea suggests that Apple would take their existing Mac OS components like the dock, dashboard, add more depth and give a three dimensional look.

Autodesk now owns Maya and 3D Studio

Autodesk, the makers of 3D Studio Max has acquired Alias, the makers of Maya for $182 million in cash. For those of you who thought that 3D Studio Max was made by Discreet, well, Autodesk now owns Discreet so in effect, the 3D modeling software market is under control by Autodesk.

Most 3D modeling that you see in movies, TV, and games is done using either Maya or 3D Studio Max. This concentration of market power by a single company in such a key market has many designers and artists quite nervous.

"What about the cost of both products?" said Scott Tykoski, a 3D graphics designer at Stardock. "These are expensive products today when there's competition, what about in the future? Are we going to be paying $12,000 base cost for these programs in a year?"

According to Autodesk, the product release schedule for both products will continue into the foreseeable future without modification. The two companies will continue to exist and market and sell both Maya and 3D Studio Max for the near future.

What the actual effect on development of both products now that competition between the two is gone remains to be seen.

TechNet Webcast: Limiting Administrator Privileges with User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista (Level 200)

Thanks to everyone who joined the chat last week, we hope you found it helpful. On Tuesday July 25th at 9:00 AM PST we will also host a live Web Cast on how User Account Control can help deploy desktops as a standard user. This Web cast is indented for IT pros and will cover the general capabilities of User Account Control. Hopefully, if LiveMeeting behaves on Windows Vista we will be able to show you some demos of the File and Registry Virtualization and the new ActiveX Installation Service.

Webcast description:

Companies today face a difficult trade-off: Is it better to deploy PC users as administrators and accept the high security risk, or to limit user privileges, which has implications for application compatibility and user productivity? User Account Control (UAC) in Microsoft Windows Vista helps solve this problem by allowing standard user accounts to perform common tasks like adding printers and changing the time zone, while also improving application compatibility. This webcast covers the benefits of UAC, UAC architecture, how to administer UAC policy settings, and how to control device installation for standard users. Join us to get the background you need to start planning your Vista deployment with standard user privileges.

You can sign up at the Events and Webcasts site. We hope to see you there.

Remixed audio cards in Windows Vista

Creative has all but dominated the PC sound card market, in no small part thanks to its prowess with hardware-accelerated 3D audio. The EAX positional audio framework born from the SoundBlaster line became the de facto standard for 3D audio in games, giving Creative a distinct advantage over its rivals. Creative licensed EAX, of course, but it kept competitors at version 2.0, limiting them to 32 concurrent 3D voices and standard-definition sampling rates and resolutions. Meanwhile, Creative extended EAX to version 5.0 with support for 128 simultaneous voices and high-definition resolutions and sampling rates.

Despite its positional audio dominance, Creative has faced increased competition of late, largely from sound cards based on C-Media's Oxygen HD audio chip. Microsoft's decision to drop hardware acceleration for DirectSound 3D audio in Vista has also posed a challenge to the SoundBlaster monopoly by blunting some of EAX's appeal. All the while, motherboard makers have diligently worked to improve the quality of onboard audio solutions, creating a perfect storm that has spawned more PC audio choices than we've ever seen before.

Company Debuts 3D Gaming Monitor

A San Diego, Calif.-based company has released a new monitor for gamers that would allow them to play games in three dimensions.

Built by iZ3D, the 22-inch widescreen monitors would require a special set of polarized glasses to make the effect work. The display is compatible with Windows XP and Vista, and works on the newest graphics accelerators and processors.

"More content is being produced in 3D. All popular games and many new movies are now created in 3D -- most viewers are unable to see the game or movie as it is meant to be seen in 3D," Thomas Striegler said. CEO of parent company Neurok Optics.

Current PCs should be able to power the monitor without a problem, according to the company. The display supports a resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels in up to 16.7 million colors, and has a 170-degree viewing angle.
