Windows Vista Pricing too High
In a poll conducted here at neowin.net, many members found the proposed pricing of Windows Vista Ultimate which is rumored to cost $450 at the launch early next year too pricey. At the time of posting, 442 of a total of 1388 votes found $299 a fair price, while 861 found it a better idea to pick it up on the street for 10 bucks.

23.01.2007Microsoft acknowledges Vista SP1 Refresh 2 = RTM
Which build of Vista SP1 became the release to manufacturing (RTM) edition? This was definitely a topic of high speculation in the last few weeks,
even before SP1 hit the RTM milestone. Many were adamant that SP1 RTM was, or would be, different from the final release candidate, while those on the
other side grasped at straws to prove their suspicions. The Microsoft Watcher, also known as Mary Jo Foley, has finally received confirmation from
Microsoft that the Vista SP1 RTM build (6001-18000) is none other than Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2. The latest official statement from the software giant
is:
"RC Refresh 2 code is the same as RTM. In final stages of a product Microsoft likes to get as much validation as possible before
releasing. The release candidate ended up being a high enough quality to be approved to release to manufacturing."

26.08.2006Microsoft better at patching XP than Vista?
A Microsoft security executive
released data Thursday showing
that, six months after
shipping Windows Vista, his
company has left more publicly
disclosed Vista bugs unpatched
than it did with Windows XP.
In total, Microsoft has
patched 12 out of 27 disclosed
Vista vulnerabilities in the
six months after it first
shipped last November. During
XP's first six months,
Microsoft's security team
patched 36 out of 39 known
bugs. The data was published
by Jeff Jones, a Microsoft
security strategy director,
who said that overall, Vista
was doing better than XP.
"Windows Vista continues to
show a trend of fewer total
and fewer high-severity
vulnerabilities at the six
month mark compared to its
predecessor product, Windows
XP," he wrote.
Jones didn't address the
larger number of unpatched
vulnerabilities, but he did
note most of the unpatched
Vista bugs were not critical.
Microsoft had left only one
high-severity Vista
vulnerability unpatched during
the period. At the end of
XP's first six months, there
were two high-severity bugs
that were unpatched. Microsoft
patched 23 high-severity XP
bugs during its first six
months, compared with only one
high-severity Vista flaw.
Jones argued that Vista had a
lower number of
vulnerabilities than
competitive operating system
products such as Red Hat
Enterprise Linux and Mac OS X.

31.01.2008The Windows 7 Effect
First, there was the wait for Windows Vista. Then there was the wait for Windows Vista SP1. Now many pundits are claiming that enterprise users will
hold off migrating to Windows Vista and wait for the release of Windows 7.
How can Microsoft counter this? By leaking information
about Windows 7 of course!
Microsofts been having a tough time of late convincing people (important people, such as system admins
and those with their hand on the check book) that Windows Vista is the future. Part of the problem is that Windows Vista has been dogged by high
profile issues relating to compatibility, speed and reliability things that people consider important in an operating system.

20.02.2008Windows Vista No Longer Matters
Make no mistake: Microsoft has moved beyond Windows Vista, which will become all too apparent during this week's Professional Developer
Conference. Windows 7 is the future, and in many ways it's the present, too. Contrary to ridiculous assertions recently made by Microsoft CEO
Steve Ballmer, Windows Vista is a flop. If businesses aren't buying Vista, after waiting six (now seven) years, it's no success. Yet, during
the last day of the Gartner 2008 expo 10 days ago, Steve asserted that Vista "has been extremely successful."
A few days earlier, Steve
boasted: "Vista is our best-selling product ever. So, if that takes too much getting over—we're not going to have products that are much
more successful than Vista has been. We sold over 180 million copies in the first 18 months, quite successful." Really?
But who's
buying this "best-selling" product ever? "We have 180 million users, mostly on the consumer market," Steve said in an Oct. 2 speech. Oh? According
to Gartner analysts Neil MacDonald and David Smith, only about 10 percent of enterprises have adopted Windows Vista. That's not a high number,
particularly in context of the approximately six years between Windows XP and Vista.
