New virus threatens Linux and Windows PCs
Hackers have released code for a cross-platform virus that could infect Linux and Windows computers.
The virus, which has been given the names Virus.Linux.Bi.a/ Virus.Win32.Bi.a, was reported at the end of last week by security firm Kaspersky Lab. Researchers worry that the malicious code may be part of a disturbing new trend of viruses that can run on Windows, as well as other operating systems that have been largely ignored by hackers.

Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Mac OS X "Tiger
From Paul Thurrotte's SuperSite:
In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.
. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

22.05.2007Cross-platform Proof-of-concept virus for OpenOffice.org
A group of malware developers
have produced a
proof-of-concept virus called
BadBunny that uses OpenOffice
macros. The code was sent
directly to SophosLabs, which
has already issued virus
protection updates. Sophos
technology consultant Graham
Cluley describes BadBunny as
" old-school malware
seemingly written to show off
a proof of concept rather than
a serious attempt to spy on
and steal from computer
users ." The virus, which
is embedded in a specially
crafted OpenOffice Draw
document, can execute scripts
with user-level permissions
and attempts to propagate
itself across the Internet via
mIRC and XChat.
The
BadBunny virus provides
insight into the security
failings of OpenOffice. The
most notable aspect of the
BadBunny virus is its
cross-platform nature; it can
successfully infect Windows,
Mac OS X, and Linux systems
and is capable of propagating
itself on both Windows and
Linux. Although it uses
OpenOffice's generic macro
language as the delivery
mechanism, the BadBunny virus
payload contains an assortment
of scripts specialized for
each target platform. On
Windows, BadBunny uses
JavaScript, on Mac OS X it
uses Ruby, and on Linux it
uses Perl and Python.

18.10.2006Mac Virus is Damp Squib, says Symantec
A proof of concept Mac OS X
virus, which was discovered
late last week and dubbed
Macarena, includes comments in
the code that indicate the
author had a difficult time
creating the malware.
According to antivirus company
Symantec, Macarena - which has
infected less than 50 machines
- has a very poor replication
mechanism and is unlikely to
cause problems for the
majority of Mac users.
Paul Ducklin, head of
technology for Sophos Asia
Pacific, said the virus was
"not important or
significant" but he was
concerned the author had
distributed the source code,
which could "not only explain
how you might write a virus
but give someone direct tools
to create one even if they
have no skills of their own".
However, in the source code,
Ducklin said the author had
expressed what appears to be
frustration at trying to make
the virus effective on
Apple's platform.
Ducklin said: "In the
source code, which is a
mishmash of stuff, there is a
comment where the author says
'so many problems for so
little code'. So it does look
as though virus writers,
fortunately, still have a way
to go before they are able to
write Mac viruses with the
proficiency and fluidity that
they can for Windows. "It
doesn't have any of the
characteristics of a modern
effective or dangerous Windows
worm or Trojan, it is a simple
appending parasitic
infector."
He also
revealed Macarena will only
affect Intel-based Macs:
"This is an Intel specific
thing - not Power PC."
However, Ducklin warned the
Apple community not to be
complacent because although
writing malware for the Mac is
more difficult than it is for
Windows, the users' common
sense can be a weak point. He
said: "There are things that
are done in OS X that make it
less likely you will get a
virus but very little can head
off a determined and
ill-informed user. If you are
determined to run a program
against common sense then you
can get yourself into trouble
and that may cause trouble for
the next guy."

28.12.2005Vista SP1 and XP SP3 Have Failed to Break the Market's Windows Fatigue
Statistics for the operating system market come in different flavors and from a variety of sources but they all have one thing in common: indicating
that Windows is losing ground to Mac OS X and Linux. As far as Microsoft is concerned, it reached the apex of the operating system market with the
launch of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP back in 2004. Since then, it has been all down hill for the Redmond giant. Sure, the slope is by no means
steep enough for a hard Windows fall, just sufficiently inclined through the erosion produced by Mac OS X and Linux that the ground is slipping from
under Microsoft's proprietary platform, slowly but surely...
