Review: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000

Looking for a new keyboard and mouse combo? Got a bit of spare cash? Look no further, this is the "Ultimate" keyboard and mouse combo set that Microsoft has ever created. The Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 combines a mouse, keyboard and a new charging "dock". The dock allows you to charge both the mouse and keyboard...wirelessly. You simply slip the keyboard under the charging port and it's charging, stick the mouse on top and that's charging too. It was this sole reason I was interested in this combo combined with the fact it has a backlit keyboard. Lets take a look at all its features.

Microsoft mouse to combine wireless, memory

Microsoft is preparing the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000, a laptop mouse which combines several important features. Above all is 1GB of internal memory, allowing owners to treat the 8000 as a USB flash drive. The mouse also offers not one but two wireless options: Bluetooth or 2.4GHz, the latter through the same USB port that allows file transfer. A switch flips between the two. The USB connector further offers magnetic charging through a direct connection.

The sensor is a high-resolution laser, and added controls on the mouse include a tiltwheel and two side buttons, assigned by default to "Magnifier" and "Back." Being a Microsoft mouse, the 8000 is immediately compatible with Windows Vista's Flip3D interface. It should be released in October for $159.

AMD releases B3 Phenom's, Tricore 8000 series

AMD today announced that it’s new B3 stepping 4x core (Quad) and B2 stepping 3x core (Tri) Phenom has begun shipping. The B3 stepping is a replacement for the B2 stepping Phenom which had the TLB bug.

What is the TLB Bug you ask? All AMD quad-core processors utilize a shared L3 cache. In instances where the software uses nested memory pages, this processor will experience a race condition. The erratum is a chip-level issue involving the TLB logic for the L3 cache that can cause system hangs in specific circumstances. AMD has a fix for the problem, but it degrades performance. AMD has stated publicly that the workaround can lower performance by as much as 10%, although one source characterized the performance hit to TR as 10-20%.

AMD has announced that there are 8 new SKU’s. 2 Tri-core and 6 Quad core variants.

X3 Core 8000 Series:
-8400 (2.1 GHz @ 95w)
-8600 (2.3 GHz @ 95w)

X4 Core 9000 Series:
-9850 (2.5 GHz @ 125w)
-9750 (2.4 GHz @ 125w) / (2.4 GHz @ 95w)
-9650 (2.3 GHz @ 95w)
-9550 (2.2 GHz @ 95w)
-9100e (1.8 GHz @ 65w)

All xx50 series are B3 stepping while the 9100e and Tri-cores are still B2 stepping, although this is likely to change quickly as B3 Tri-core are expected Q2 08.

Imagination Technologies announce multi-core mobile GPUs

The Register is reporting that Imagination Technologies has recently announced two multi-core graphics processing units, for use in mobile devices. The chips are being called the POWERVR™ SGX543MP, with the last two letters on the end of SGX543MP being replaced with 2 or 16, to represent the variance in the amount of cores. This news is rather interesting as MacRumors says Apple is an investor and licensee of Imagination Technologies, and they are the company who currently makes the graphics chips for the iPhone and iPhone 3G. This could lead one to believe that these new chips will be included in a new revision of Apple's iPhone, expected to be announced/released around June or July this year.

Intel to push two new technologies with X38 chipset

Intel is currently developing two new technologies which will be introduced along with the upcoming high-end X38 chipset, according to sources at motherboard makers. Both technologies target the enthusiast market.

The two new technologies are named Extreme Memory and Extreme Tuning Utility. Both new marketing lead architectures will be introduced along with the X38 chipset in October this year, according to motherboard makers.

Extreme Memory technology will function similar to Nvidia's SLI Memory allowing specially branded and certified memory modules to operate at higher performance levels when installed in a supporting motherboard, said the sources. Extreme Memory technology will only be available for DDR3 modules and will not support DDR2 memory, the sources added. In addition to X38 and P35 chipsets for desktops, the next-generation Intel 3-series notebook Centrino platform will also support Extreme Memory technology, noted the sources...

Gartner's top 10 strategic technologies for 2008

Research firm Gartner Inc. has put "Green IT" at the top of its list of ten strategic technologies for next year, and says if businesses dont improve data center energy efficiency, the government may force it.

But social networking technologies are also on the list, along with some further off technological developments, such as server designs that use a resource-sharing approach called a computing fabric.

A strategic technology is something that may have an impact on a business. And by impact it may be something driving an investment or posing a risk for the business, said David Cearley, a Gartner analyst. If your competitors adopt one of these technologies "does that put you at a competitive disadvantage?" he said at the Stamford, Conn.-based firm's ITexpo here.

Over 4000 Comcast customer passwords exposed

A list of over 8000 (4000 after duplicates were removed) Comcast customer usernames and passwords has been floating around the web for the past two months, unprotected. The list was made available on Scribd, a file-sharing website where someone by the name of ‘vuthanhan2004' had uploaded the list, which had been viewed over 345 times, and downloaded over 25 times, according to an article by the NYTimes. "It is possible that the people on the list divulged their passwords in response to some kind of phishing message, and that Comcast itself is not to blame," said Kevin Andreyo, an educational technology specialist in Reading, Pa.
