MSN Direct Enables Web Sites to Deliver Location Information to GPS Navigation Devices

Today Microsoft Corp. released an open application programming interface (API) for the MSN Direct Send to GPS feature for navigation devices. This allows any Web site to offer visitors the ability to send addresses, business listings, or other locations directly from the site to their GPS unit, eliminating the cumbersome step of re-entering or searching for the same information on their navigation device.

The API is an extension of the MSN Direct feature initially launched at International CES earlier this year. With this updated version, MSN Direct allows any Web site to send location information to navigation devices either wirelessly or via a USB connection. The wireless delivery is compatible with MSN Direct-enabled devices that have the Send to GPS feature, including several units from Garmin Ltd. such as the nüvi 780 and nüvi 880, along with nüvi 5000, nüvi 750, nüvi 760, or nüvi 2x5 series devices with the optional MSN Direct receiver. USB delivery is also compatible with the vast majority of remaining Garmin navigators.

Windows Home Server x64 Connector Announcement Coming at CES 2008

Good news is on the way for those of you who wish to use Windows Home Server with x64 home computers.

As many of you know, the Windows Home Server Connector does not currently support x64 home computers, which has caused a lot of frustration and angst amongst early adopters of the x64 platform. Microsoft have previously announced that they would provide x64 support for machines running Windows Vista (check out our Q&A with the WHS Team for more) - those of you running Windows XP x64 will have to upgrade, unfortunately.

OpsMgr 2007 SP1 RC Console crashes on x64

Andrzej Lipka: When you try to open the Distributed Application Designer from a console installed on an x64 server you may see the console crashes with .NET error in the Application Log (something of type badimageformat).

This seems to be a bug in SP1 RC. To work around it use a console from an x86-32 (32 bit) machine to connect to the x64 server.

On OpsMgr 2007 RTM this issue does not exist.

Visual Studio 2008 - MSBuild

As we get down to the final lap of Visual Studio 2008, I wanted to talk about some of the new features in this release. Over the next few months, I will be blogging on different features and technologies that Im excited about.

PowerPlaylist for Windows Vista Media Center released on CodePlex

As announced last night on the Media Center Sandbox blog, a new application for Windows Vista Media Center has been released. The application, named PowerPlaylist, adds a custom strip to the Windows Vista Media Center start menu with up to five tiles. Each tile represents an audio, slideshow and/or visualization combination which will start when the tile is selected. PowerPlaylist is configured via an XML data file, and the application includes an editor to customize the information in the data file, including the title of the custom Start Menu strip and the name, image, audio source, slideshow folder and visualization for each tile.

PowerPlaylist has been released on CodePlex, and you can download x86 and/or x64 MSI-based installers if you want to try out the application. You can also download source code (licensed with the Microsoft Permissive License) if you want to see how the application works behind the scenes, modify it to add features, fix bugs, etc.

Next Release of OneCare Won't Support Vista x64

Peter GalliWhen Microsoft announced that it was ready to roll out Windows Live OneCare version 1.5 to coincide with the general release of Windows Vista, it omitted one important fact: the product will not support Vista x64 or XP x64. I received an email this morning from a reader telling me that the OneCare v1.5 beta would not install on his Vista test machine as it was just for 32-bit systems. "It would be nice, now that 64-bit Vista is set to go, to specify if the software will run properly in 64-bit," he said. "Has this changed in the final release? It would be nice to know as I have OneCare on all three home PCs, and plan on upgrading all of them to 64-bit Vista," he said.

So I asked Microsoft, which confirmed that, indeed, OneCare v1.5 would not run on Vista x64 or Windows XP x64 for that matter, "although it will support 32-bit Windows on x64 hardware," a Microsoft spokesperson told me. The spokesperson was also pretty non-committal about the possibility of x64 support going forward, saying "we continually evolve OneCare to meet customer demand, though we have no further specifics to share at this time around potential support for x64 in the future." My colleague Joe Wilcox spoke to Gina Narkunas, the lead product manager for Windows Live OneCare, this evening from London. She told him that "it wasn't a business priority to support 64-bit," because there is "no consumer demand" for a 64-bit right now.

Live Messenger 8.5 update no longer supported on XP x64

Thanks Avi for posting this in Back Page News.

From the Inside Windows Live Messenger Team Blog: Back in November we shipped the final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 along with several other Windows Live applications and services. A lot of you have already upgraded, and for that we thank you and hope you’re enjoying it as much as we enjoyed building it. Starting soon, we’re going to make it easier for those of you who haven’t upgraded yet to get onto our latest and greatest.

This will happen in two phases. First, everyone running Windows XP or Windows Vista will get a prompt encouraging you to upgrade. When you accept the upgrade, the new unified installer will launch and start upgrading Messenger. While it’s installing, you’ll have the option to download and install other Windows Live applications. You don’t have to take any of them, but we think you’ll like them and hope you’ll give them a try.

Coming Zune

It seems Microsoft has published a little teaser site just to get Zune enthusiasts pumped. But this is no ordinary site...

Most teaser sites usually contain information on certain unknown facts about the product in the form of either short video clips or blurred images just to, well, "tease" eager consumers. It seems Microsoft has chosen a different path, and we're not quite sure how to explain it so you will just have to see for your self...

The site contains two completely unpredictable and random video clips that have absolutely nothing to do about the Zune besides the fact that the logo makes an appearance towards the end. Just watch and see...
