Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification

Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted here is in fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and 6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

Windows Vista SP1 Build 6001.16633 Info

Some very quick info that we came across regarding the latest release of Vista SP1 to testers. As Mary Jo Foley previously reported, Microsoft have indeed made the latest build of Vista SP1 (6001.16633) available as a standalone update file to testers.

Build: 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655)

Filename: windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe

Size: 684MB

Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format. Many (including myself) were expecting Microsoft to deliver the update for Vista SP1 in the the new Vista/Server 2008-only .msu format used for current Hotfixes.

DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 - The Evolution

As Windows Vista brought to the table the exclusive DirectX 10, the first service pack for the operating system will evolve Microsofts graphics technology to version 10.1. DirectX 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of Vista Service Pack 1, concomitantly with the official release of Build 6001.16659. Although the testing milestones of Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP SP3 Beta, are officially limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of Windows Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft, and simultaneously test drive DirectX 10.1.

However, Vista users have to understand that DirectX 10.1, as well as DirectX 10 is a technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series. According to an AMD whitepaper focused on the implementation of DirectX 10.1 in the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series, the latest application programming interface from Microsoft, manages to "unlock the state of the art in GPU technology."

Windows Vista SP1 Pre-Beta v.249 Leaked

Yet again, another pre-beta version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has been leaked to the public. So, what's different in this version compared to the last leak?

Well first, this version carries a build tag of 6.0.6001.16633.longhorn.070803-1655 . Unlike v.165 which was integrated with Vista RTM into an ISO image, v.249 is now a standalone installer and weighs approximately 684 MB. This does not require a clean install for those users running the RTM version. The setup wizard requires several reboots and atleast 30 minutes for installation.

Besides bug fixes, overall v.249 does not differ much from the last leak. However, users claim this version to be buggier and not as stable as the last leak.

Windows Server 2008 RC2 Confirmed?

A few days ago I was reading an article over at the Realtime Windows Server Community (noticed it via ActiveWin) where they were wondering whether Microsoft would release an RC2 build of Server 2008 prior to RTM. Well, thanks to the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta which is publicly available here, Microsoft may have inadvertently already answered that exact question. Since the Server 2008 build included with the Hyper-V Beta is a newer compile (6001.17119) than the originally released Server 2008 RC1 (6001.17051), Microsoft have included an updated EULA which directly mentions RC2:

Support for IE8 pre-released versions extended

The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

Vista Service Pack 1: It lives

With all the Microsoft-created confusion out there around when — and even whether — the company plans to deliver the first service pack (SP) for Windows Vista, it’s nice to see some concrete proof that Vista SP1 does exist.

The http://www.winfuture.de/news,3 1801.html>WinFuture.de folks managed to grab a quick snapshot of a machine running a build of Vista SP1 during one of the Rally talks at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles this week. Plain as day, it says: “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.”)

I also saw a PowerPoint slide mentioning the existence of Vista SP1 during a WinHEC chalk talk on “The Future of Input” at this week’s show. (The context: A shim for the kernel-mode driver foundation version of the digitizer driver will ship as a Windows Driver Kit sample in Vista SP1. That was it.)..

Windows Vista, Longhorn Server and IE 7 Beta Test Reboot

Testers who responded to the Microsoft call up to be re-included into the Windows Longhorn Server beta test have been notified that the test has been "restarted" under the old name "Windows Vista, Longhorn Server and IE 7 Beta"

The latest build, Windows Longhorn Server 6001-16406-061208-1900 for X86 and X64 is available for download and testing. As of yet there is still no final designation for the server version but we'd still like to speculate that it will end up as Windows Server 2007 seeing as Microsoft already made it clear when Windows Server 2003 was released that it intended to stay with the "Windows Server" branding.

Windows Longhorn Server didn't receive much attention at the Consumer Electronic Show, it was shadowed by Windows Vista and the Windows Home Server announcement, hopefully this will change when WinHEC hits later this year in LA.

Longhorn Server December CTP released

On the evening of December 20 (EST) Microsoft released to testers the December Community Technology Preview (CTP) build of Longhorn Server.

Microsoft has posted the new Longhorn Server bits to the Microsoft Connect site for download. The December CTP is what was slated to be the November CTP of the next version of Windows Server.

Thebuild number of the December CTP is 6001.16406. Both 32- and 64-bit versions are available.

Microsoft is planning on one more Longhorn Server CTP (possibly in January) before releasing the next major milestone, Beta 3, in the early part of 2007. The final Longhorn Server release is slated to ship in the latter half of next year.

Thanks for the heads up BoInTheMix!

Vista SP1 v.658 First Impressions

Although Mike doesn't mention the actual build number, doing a little math, we know v.646 = 6001.17030 from the Vista SP1 Seminar so, 658 - 646 = 12, 17030 + 12 =17042, v.658 looks to be 6001.17042.

Mike Walker: To give you guys a sneak peek at the SP1 build. I just installed Vista SP1 with zero issues. The upgrade process seamless and took approx. an hour. There was only one concern however. My box was waiting for about 20 minutes to shut down. Other than that, all goodness.

I have noticed a huge difference in performance of my machine, it's like someone injected an espresso into my Vista! This is my first day using so I'll be sure to check back in to let you guys and gals know how things are going.

Vista file copying showdown: RTM vs SP1

Long Zheng: Copying files is the Achilles heel of Windows Vista, ścalculating time remaining¦ť the blue screen of death equivalent. If anyone tells you Windows Vista isnt slow at copying files, then they obviously havent downloaded any DVDrips and tried to move it onto another computer. It was anticipated Windows Vista Service Pack 1 would fix this problem amongst other things.

As announced this week, the first beta build of SP1 (6001.16659) has been released on Microsoft Connect. The initial reaction from most tester has been largely positive noting improvements in file operations such as moving, copying and deleting files. However I havent seen anyone post any benchmarks or evidence to prove it is indeed faster.
