Using Windows Server 2008 as a SUPER workstation OS

Vijayshinva Karnure: Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft's stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build I could not resist installing it on my workstation. I always prefer running a Server OS on my workstation... I have been running Windows 2003 disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days.

So here is my tale of how I went about setting up Windows Server 2008 to look and fell like its desktop counterpart Windows Vista.

Transform Windows Server 2008 to a Workstation

Emmanuel Bergerat: Few days ago I changed my professional notebook/laptop for a real working machine. Working on advanced MOSS 2007 projects, setting up directly MOSS on my host OS is nice, so did I.

Windows Server 2008 Standard RC1 EN, bytes from MSDN, looks like the best candidate for this.

Once setup (its Vista like setup screens), the OS runs smoothly, and working pleasure is here.

But, Windows Server 2008 is hardened compared to Windows Server 2003 R2 on security. Everything is here, but you need to dig in the OS to have them...

Multicast OS Deployments Using Windows Server 2008

One of the new and improved features of the soon to be released Windows Server 2008 is that we now have the ability to perform enhanced multicasting when deploying OS images right out of the box.

The new Windows Deployment Services (WDS) will now support an enhanced multicast feature which will allow you to multicast out your Windows OS's from Windows Server 2008. This is not 'new' news as I believe we have documented that this will be a feature for quite some time, but one that I feel is overlooked given all of the other many features of the new product.

Windows Server 2008: Taking a Closer Look

When you install and configure a server operating system, you hope you'll never have to do it again. It's inordinately complex and time-consuming. Each server is a unique creation, and each configuration meticulously adapted to a particular use.

Any installed drivers, applications and other software components reflect that specialized use. Even individual applications may have a unique set of patches. It's difficult, if not impossible, to identify each unique configuration and determine how to replicate it on a new OS.

So why should you bother with Windows Server 2008? You'll still have to replicate your server environment on each server as you replace your old OS. It should take less time, though, with Windows Server 2008. And when you're done, you'll have a more secure, more manageable and better performing box, both physically and virtually.

Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack

Windows Server 2003 is well known for its superior speed, stability, and security when compared to Windows XP. This fact is proven by Microsoft's use of the Windows Server 2003 kernel in both Windows x64 Edition and the upcoming Windows Vista. Given this fact, it's no wonder that many Windows users have already switched to Windows Server 2003 to gain such improvements. However, these users will have no doubt also discovered that compatibility issues are common when using Windows Server 2003 as a primary home-use OS. Until Now... We are proud to present version 2.0 of Windows X's popular Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack. This tool will convert the Windows 2003 codebase from ServerNT to WinNT, which will enable locked features and transform Windows Server 2003 into a more compatible, and usable OS like Windows XP. After converting, your OS will perform like Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Finally you can gain all the advantages of running Windows Server 2003, without the compatibility headaches!..

Windows Server 2008 will be Microsoft's last 32-Bit OS

During a speech this morning, Bill Laing, general manager of the Windows Server division, reiterated that, after 2008, Microsoft would only produce 64-bit operating systems. Windows Server 2008 will be Microsoft's last 32-bit OS.

Laing spoke during the second day of Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference.

The future has been an ongoing theme among the WinHEC keynotes. In talking about the future, Microsoft is telling its customers and hardware, software and channel partners where it will take the technology in the 2009-2010 release cycle—and somewhat in the meantime.

The move to 64-bit has been much shakier than from 16-bit to 32-bit. The transition is slowest on the desktop, where driver and application support is an impediment. On the server, Microsoft offers mixed 32-bit and 64-bit products, with mixed acceptance. But Laing made clear that many new Microsoft server products would only be 64-bit...

2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet

Microsoft has recently switched its main website, www.microsoft.com to Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft-IIS/7.0

Although Windows Server 2008 is not yet released, Beta 3 is publicly available for early adopters to use. Internet Information Server 7 is already released, but will probably not see widespread use until Windows Server 2008 (formerly "Longhorn") is released, since it only runs on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

There are already around 2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet. Whilst some of the servers running Windows Server 2008 are at Microsoft itself, the majority are not, with developers and hosting companies taking advantage of Windows Server 2008's availability under a Go Live license which allows the beta to be used for testing or in a live environment without cost...

Thurrott: New UI coming for Windows 7?

Recently, there has been some rumors flying around that Windows 7 would have a completely new UI. Here is a quote from an article on Paul Thurrott's Super Site for Windows:During the development of Windows Server 2008, I was told by project manager Alex Hinrichs that Microsoft had completely changed the way it developed Windows. Thanks to the componentization of the underlying OS, it was no longer necessary to "fork" the Windows build tree so that different parts of the product team could develop their own parts of the OS in isolation.

Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification

Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted here is in fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and 6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

Windows "Workstation" 2008 Clobbers Vista in Benchmark Testing

Randall Kennedy: Just when you think you've got it all figured out, along comes another curve ball to keep you guessing. This time around it's a set of new benchmark test results from our old friends at the exo.performance.network. Apparently, these guys heard about the brouhaha surrounding some Microsoft's engineer's blog post about using Server 2008 as a "Super Workstation OS" and decided to put the concept to the test. They loaded each OS onto identical hardware, tweaking the Server implementation to make it look and act like Vista. Then they tested them under a variety of productivity and multitasking scenarios.

The net result: Windows "Workstation" 2008 (i.e the tweaked Server 2008 installation) trashed Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, outscoring its desktop sibling by as much as 17%.

You can read all the gory details over at the exo.blog site. Suffice to say that there's a new option for power users who are fed-up with Vista's sluggishness: Windows Server 2008, or as I'm now calling it, "Windows NT 6.1 Workstation."

Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista

It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.

Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008 includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.

A Microsoft employee and third party website have created tutorials on how to use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.

Top 10 Overlooked Features of Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008 is on its way. With the first release candidate in the pipeline, it shouldn't be long before release to manufacturing and general availability.

With such a long development time (it's the first new Windows Server OS since 2003,) the showstopping new features have been well publicized: Most IT pros are familiar with at least some of the details of Server Core, PowerShell and Windows Server Virtualization (codenamed Viridian). But Windows 2008 includes a lot more than those headliners.

To that end, we're presenting the Top 10 overlooked features of Windows 2008. We spoke with Ward Ralston, senior technical product manager for Windows Server, to help us build our list. These items haven't garnered the same kind of press attention, hype and word-of-mouth as the others, but they're nonetheless important -- maybe very important -- to your network. Today we'll present the first five, and Monday the next five.

Announcing Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Server 2008 R2 showed its pretty face at the Professional Developers Conference today, here in Los Angeles. Hi there, my names Oliver Rist and Im a new technical product manager on the Windows Server team. Im down here in La-La Land heaving great sighs of satisfaction as we unveil the first sneak peeks of pre-beta Windows Server 2008 R2. Though this release is right in line with our announced roadmap strategy for future Server releases, there are several items of note with R2:

First and foremost, 32-bit is done. History. Archives. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows OS platform to go 64-bit only, and frankly it was high time. Customers have been unable to purchase a 32-bit server CPU for over two years now, and the advancements in CPU architectures really dictated that we squeeze as much performance out of customers hardware purchases as possible. The move to 64-bit is a first step.

Youll also find that weve aligned R2 development around four core technology pillars...
