LG Launches Microsoft-Powered DVR

Aiming to take on the popular TiVo DVR, LG on Wednesday introduced its combination digital video recorder and DVD recorder based on Microsoft technology. The LRM-519 would be the first set-top device to use the Microsoft Program Guide, a TiVo-like service being offered by the Redmond company.

The device includes a 160GB hard drive and will run on Windows Media Center Technologies. The DVD recorder will support a range of recording formats, including DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD+R Dual Layer discs. Users will also be able to expand the storage space of the unit by connecting external hard drives to the DVR's 2 USB ports.

USB 3.0 Specifications released

The new standard for USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0, also known as SuperSpeed USB, has released the specifications for its next major upgrade. USB 3.0 is meant to surpass its current predecessor USB 2.0, which supports up to 480 Mbps data transfer. The USB 3.0 will support speeds up to 4.8 Gbps, roughly 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The new standard is expected to be more power-efficient over its predecessor. Your old devices will not be garbage just yet, since USB 3.0 will be fully backwards compatible with your old devices, supporting USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0.

Youtube, LG agree to develop mobile phone

South Korea's LG Electronics said Tuesday it has signed an agrement with YouTube, the world's biggest video-sharing website, to develop a mobile phone which can operate the service.

Two notebooks approved for Wireless USB

It's taken long enough, but they're here: the first computers that can make USB connections sans cables.

Dell's Inspiron 1720 notebook and Lenovo's ThinkPad T61 and T61p models are the first PCs to receive certification for the standard, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) is expected to announce Monday. Texas-based WiQuest Communications makes the Wireless USB chipset in both notebooks.

The Thinkpad can be ordered now for $1,814. The Inspiron notebook will not ship until late summer or early fall and pricing is not yet available, according to Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden. She said Dell does expect more of its notebook models to be Wireless USB-capable in the future. ..

According to a report from EETimes.com, Intel has pushed plans to support USB 3.0 in its chipsets back until 2011. Without Intel's support for the standard, motherboard and gadget makers will be forced to hold off due to the expense of using third party controllers. Also known as SuperSpeed USB and developed by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group - Hewlett Packard, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments - USB 3.0 promises speeds of up to 4.8Gbit/s. At the Intel Developers Forum 2009 last month, it was unofficially revealed that Intel planned to start offering support for USB 3.0 in early 2010, but then "shifted its plans out a year," according to the EETimes.com.
